"Cats in the House" and "Cat Trouble" by Doreen Tovey

A whole series of books about a Siamese cat named Saji. The first book, “Cats in the House,” tells about an extremely wayward cat who felt like a full-fledged mistress in the house where the couple who sheltered Saji also lived. And in the next book, “Cat Troubles,” the family becomes larger - first, the Siamese kitten Solomon, or simply Sili, appears in the lives of the heroes, who causes a lot of funny troubles, and later the cat Shebalu appears. And then a war breaks out between the little bullies.

The author of the books, Doreen Tovey, knew what she was writing about, because she was the president of the Siamese Cat Club, as well as the West of England Cat Club. And the novels themselves are based on stories from the life of the writer, her husband and pets. The stories are filled with good humor and create a feeling of homely warmth and comfort.

Werewolves

The most memorable cats are those associated with evil spirits, werewolves (the Poles came up with a special word for them - “kotolak”). Out of competition is the cat Behemoth from Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita,” named after the demon of carnal desires from the biblical Book of Job. But the very first, it seems, was the werewolf from “Lafertovskaya Poppy” by Anthony Pogorelsky in 1825. In this story (the first Russian romantic fiction), the groom, titular adviser Aristarkh Faleleich Murlykin, turns into a cat. The book was published just a few years after the German “Everyday Views of Murr the Cat” by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, a pillar of the world’s “cat” prose.

Of course, Nikolai Gogol could not do without werecats in his Little Russian evenings. In “May Night, or the Drowned Woman,” the heroine is driven out of her house by her young, beautiful stepmother, who at night turns into a cat. In “The Evening on the Eve of Ivan Kupala,” an old witch turns into a black cat and tells her where to find the treasure.

However, the positive hero Ivan Koshkin’s son can also turn into a cat in East Slavic fairy tales; and Ivan Tsarevich has a brother, Kot Kotovich.

Speakers

Firstly, beyond competition, cats are magical and talking. In fairy tales there is a Cat Bayun - from his nickname you can immediately guess that he knows how to bayat (talk). He is a storyteller and also a bit of a cannibal. His closest relative is Pushkin’s scientist cat from the preface to “Ruslan and Lyudmila,” who “goes to the right and starts a song, to the left he tells fairy tales.” The poet picked it up from the fairy tales of Arina Rodionovna.

Their descendant, of course, is the talking cat Vasily with a hereditary sclerotic memory, living at Iznakurnozh - from the novel “Monday Begins on Saturday” by the Strugatsky brothers. But in Tatyana Tolstoy’s Kysi, rather, cannibalistic traits appeared.
