When we look into the big eyes of babies, our brains are flooded with feel-good chemicals. The same reaction occurs when we see big-eyed animals, so it's no wonder we find them irresistible.
Below are 15 cat breeds with big eyes that are hard to resist.
Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex's head is shaped like a triangle, making its large eyes stand out. The color of the iris around the pupil is predominantly gold, although there are other variations.
Pay attention to the extraordinary ears!
The Cornish Rex has no hair, only an undercoat, which is very fine and can sometimes curl. The absence of a “fur coat” emphasizes the size of the cat’s eyes.
Due to their “smooth” appearance, representatives of this cat breed are often compared to greyhounds.
The Cornish Rex is an adventurer; This cat explores everything around her and maintains a playful behavior throughout her long adult life.
Causes of eye problems in cats
Three groups of reasons are to blame for the occurrence of ophthalmic diseases. These include:
- infectious, due to the negative effects of viruses and bacteria;
- non-infectious, including tumors, injuries and allergies;
- congenital, associated with breed predisposition and poor genetics.
The risk group includes extreme-type Persians with pronounced breed traits. Due to increased tear production, which forms pathogenic microflora, their tear ducts are very often infected with bacteria.
Sphinx
Thanks to its hairless body, the Sphynx has become one of the most recognizable breeds. These striking hairless creatures are medium in size; Characteristic features of their appearance are large ears and wrinkled skin.
Sphinxes amaze with the intense gaze of their large eyes, which against the backdrop of a bald head seem even more significant.
Despite the fact that representatives of this breed appear hairless, their body can be covered with fluff, creating the effect of “corduroy” skin.
bald body does not relieve the owner of caring for it, because... Due to the lack of hair, the animal is unable to absorb the natural oils it secretes.
What the sphinx lacks in fur, they make up for it with their extraordinary personality. They are sociable, energetic and playful. Curious creatures are characterized by mischievous behavior and a love of teasing toys and puzzles.
Ukrainian Levkoy
A young unrecognized breed, formed in 2000, but still in its infancy. A lot of cat blood is mixed in the veins of the Levkoy; from each ancestor the breed received some specific feature. For example, the folded ears are taken from the Scottish mixed breed, and the smooth, partially velor skin is taken from the Sphynx.
Overall the breed is very graceful and will likely gain recognition in federations within the next 10 years. Now you can buy a kitten in Kyiv, but it is recommended to do this only from professional breeders, so as not to stumble upon an exterior defect.
The appearance of the left-handed plant deceptively speaks of the severity of its character. In fact, this is a curious and very affectionate creature. Yes, the Levka may not show tenderness to guests, but in the family he is a full-fledged participant in all events. Hanging around in the kitchen, watching a movie with everyone, watching handicrafts with interest - all this is a characteristic feature of the breed.
Scottish Fold (Scottish Fold)
The Scottish Fold cat is famous for its unusual folded ears and bright yellowish-orange eyes. These cute creatures have a calm nature, love to be around people and can get along with anyone.
Although Scottish Folds have gained popularity for their funny ears, their large, beautiful, round-shaped eyes have not gone unnoticed. The irises of these cats are colored in shades of gold, blue and green. Add fluffy ears to such eyes and you will get the cutest representative of the cat family!
As active mousecatchers, Scottish Folds are playful, sensitive and expressive. These cheerful cats have a habit of taking strange poses: sitting upright, like meerkats, lying flat on the floor or on their backs with their paws raised up. They are moderately active, choosing toys to train dexterity and intelligence, such as puzzles. These animals need communication and make good companions.
If you have a Scottish Fold, be prepared to play with it after you get home from school or work.

Burmese cat
Birmans are friendly, kind and personable animals. From their ancestors, the Siamese, cats inherited a playful and affectionate (but not annoying) character.
Representatives of this breed are described as “stone in silk”, because they are much heavier than they seem at first glance.
The Birman's "coat" is short and silky, against which the large round green eyes look great. At the same time, it does not require special care - it is enough to comb the cat once a week or when it is necessary to remove lost hair.
Young Burmese are curious and active, but with age they become calmer and prefer to observe the process rather than participate in it. They can often be found sleeping on a windowsill or in the corner of a sofa under the falling rays of the sun.
Burmese cats are excellent jumpers and climbers, so it is important to provide your pets with the necessary climbing equipment.
Black, brown cat eye manicure
Typically, women avoid shades that are too dark. However, when using this technique, the colors acquire depth and a charming sound. And black no longer seems dull, it fascinates with its shimmer, and blue resembles elite jewelry - sapphires, diamonds.
Black and brown perfectly complement the military style, suitable for girls and women with character. They will suit a stylish evening dress, a work dress code or a sports casual suit.
However, nail designers advise ash and golden blondes to be careful with dark colors. Also, they do not go well with gentle, romantic natures who adore light, airy outfits.
To give the dark color a little life, use decor that suits the style:
- liquid stones, rhinestones;
- contrasting patterns, stripes with blurred edges, sparkles;
- interesting color combinations, gradient.
Tonkinese cat
Playful Tonkinese remain active throughout their lives. They love to run, play fetch (“fetch an object”), open the door, etc. These sociable pets prefer to spend time in the company of a person and do not tolerate loneliness.
This breed was bred in 1960-1970. Its representatives have a strong body of medium size, short silky hair and beautifully outlined round eyes. The color of the latter can be quite exotic - sky blue, purple and even gold.
The Tonkinese cat is believed to have been brought to Britain in the early 1800s and was called the Chocolate Siamese at the time. In the USA, when breeding Tonkinese, Siamese and Birmans were used to “soften” the breed and achieve sea green eye color.
Devon Rex
The mischievous Devon Rex, also known as the pixie, is a loving and loyal companion. He makes an ideal companion, loves attention from family members, and gets along well with children and other animals.
The breed, which resembles the Cornish Rex, appeared in England in the late 1950s. The distinctive features of its representatives are large oval eyes and impressively sized ears.
These cats are smart, active and require constant stimulation. They love to jump and occupy high places, so the animals must be provided with cat trees and other jumping devices.
Moderately active pets are fascinated by the process of learning and playing fetch, and therefore it is recommended to leave interactive toys for the animals in your absence.
The Devon Rex has a slender body, long legs, large eyes and high cheekbones. Their coat is characterized by increased fragility, so it should not be combed, but wiped with a sponge once a week.
Features of a cat's vision.
Small cats have simply huge eyes, they occupy 1/3 of the size of the muzzle. It is worth noting that lions, tigers, and leopards have much smaller eyes and have a round pupil structure.
The cat's pupil is a real miracle. Like a filter in a camera lens, it narrows if the light is bright enough and expands if the light becomes less saturated.
Not only the light flux affects the width of the cat's pupil. If the animal is scared or hunting, the pupil stretches into a thread.
- Cats see much better than humans, but only at a distance of no closer than 2 meters; at a shorter distance, the image is blurry, and animals use vibrissae (special organs located on the whiskers) and sense of smell.
- Further than 20 meters, the image visible to the cat will also be blurred. Like any predator, a cat can see moving objects well within its jump range.
To imagine how cats see our world, just look at a blurry, poor quality photograph.
Singapura cat
Singapuras are beautiful creatures that can steal anyone's heart. They are playful, cheeky, friendly, and can often be found tucked under a duvet cover or basking in the sun.
Representatives of this breed are small in size. Because of this, their eyes stand out and look wide open.
Like the Burmese, the Singapura is full of mischief, affectionate and extremely inquisitive. They love to chase a ball around the apartment or tap dance on the keyboard. Additionally, these cats love people and get along easily with other animals, making them ideal pets.
How can you tell if something is wrong with your cat's eye?
If there is something wrong with a cat's eye, it is easy to understand by its condition. The following symptoms will indicate the disease
:
- increased lacrimation and discharge of pus;
- redness of the mucous membrane and inflammation of the eyelids;
- photophobia, covering of the third eyelid and frequent blinking;
- pain on palpation;
- the appearance of itching;
- sticking of the eyelids after waking up due to the drying out of the accumulated exudate.
Depending on the cause of the malaise, symptoms may be supplemented by worsening appetite, apathy, severe thirst and fever. If you notice at least a few of the listed signs, be sure to schedule your pet for an examination at a veterinary clinic.
Persian cat
Persians are affectionate, gentle and obedient. They have a calm disposition and prefer to spend time lying on a soft sofa, posing for their owner. Representatives of this breed are not very active, which makes them ideal pets for keeping at home.
The Persian muzzle is relatively small, making the round eyes seem especially noticeable. Their iris is a beautiful blue color, but there are exceptions; sometimes even one eye can be different from the other.
Despite their affectionate nature, Persian cats are selective and pay attention mainly to members of their family and some familiar people.
These beautiful creatures get along well with children and other pets, but they avoid noisy environments, preferring serenity and the absence of any changes in life.
“Cat eye” with an emphasis on one or two nails
A manicure may contain a combination of aesthetics, minimalism and delicate shine. This is the perfect outfit for your nails. Conversely, you can decorate all your nails with a magnetic design, highlighting one nail plate with a contrasting color. Flight of fantasy design with “cats” without boundaries.
Russian blue
Emerald green eyes and a gorgeous silver coat make the Russian Blue a strikingly beautiful cat. The animal is beautifully built, has long legs that allow it to run quickly, and has a gentle character.
The Russian Blue's eyes are large, round and widely set. At birth their color is yellow, which changes to green over time. Looking at the cat, it seems that she never sleeps.
Representatives of this breed are very playful and require constant attention from the owner when he is at home. However, they avoid large crowds of people, preferring to nap in a quiet corner.
Russian Blues have a special love for food; If you don’t show strength of character and follow your cat’s lead, it will quickly gain extra pounds.
When getting a pet of this breed, you should remember that its developed mind requires constant training; the animal must be provided with the necessary stimulants for physical and intellectual activity.
Pathologies of the fundus and lens
Ophthalmic diseases in cats can affect the fundus and lens. These organs are responsible for visual acuity, so when they are damaged, it becomes more difficult for the animal to catch objects at a distance.
Cataract
It is characterized by a loss of transparency of the lens, impairing the ability to refract light rays. The main symptoms of cataracts are clouding of the pupil and iris, as well as a gradual change in their shade to bluish-gray.
The causes of the disease lie in congenital disorders, advanced infections, injuries and diabetes. At the initial stage, only damaged particles are removed, and at an advanced stage, the entire lens is removed at once.
Glaucoma
Accompanied by the appearance of a greenish cataract, redness of the mucous membrane and an enlarged pupil. The main cause of glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure. The pathology cannot be treated, but thanks to cryotherapy and antiglaucomatous drugs, its development can be slowed down.
British Shorthair
British cats range in size from medium to large. These animals have large gold, orange or copper-colored eyes and a short, wide nose. Their short or medium-length coat requires constant care, especially during the shedding period.
These cute creatures are intellectually developed and prefer to spend time at home with toys and people. The gentle nature of the animal allows it to get along well with its owner. Although British Shorthairs love to play, they do not require constant human attention.
Abyssinian cat
The Abyssinian cat breed, even as a kitten, suggests that it did not appear as a result of selection and persistent crossing, but originated during the formation of humans as a species and is an indigenous cat of Africa.
The breed came to Europe in 1868 after the return of British troops from Ethiopia, but it is not known for certain whether this is a cat from this country, or whether it is a relative of the Egyptian Mau. Nowadays the breed is very popular, in 2012 it even took second place in the ranking of the popularity of short-haired cat breeds in the USA and Europe.
In our country, this big-eyed beauty can also be purchased, although the price for a kitten is steep. In everyday life, Abyssinians are famous as diplomat cats, capable of getting along with any dog, cat, children and even a raccoon. The breed is playful by nature and can entertain itself by climbing on all surfaces, but it still does not tolerate the lack of attention from its owner.
A big plus of the breed is its unpretentiousness. Of course, those who can afford an Abyssinian will not skimp on maintenance, but still the breed eats everything that is given, easily gets accustomed to a tray or walking on a harness, and the structure of the coat ensures easy combing that even a beginner can handle.
Abyssinian
The Abyssinian cat can become your best friend. Possessing energy, they are always ready to have fun. These animals love to spend time with their owner and try to constantly be near him.
Representatives of this breed have a small muzzle, which makes their almond-shaped eyes appear especially large.
Friendly cats are known for their intelligence and desire to climb high places, so they should be provided with cat trees, posts and other climbing aids.
Abyssins show affection towards family members. Animals also prefer to be in company. If you have a busy lifestyle, it is worth getting a second pet so that your Abyssinian cat does not get bored alone.
When veterinary help is urgently needed
If something is wrong with a cat’s eye, the owner can provide first aid. After this, it is recommended to consult a doctor. This must be done even if the problem seems completely insignificant. After all, it is impossible to make a diagnosis on your own, and your mistake can result in premature blindness of your beloved pet.
Emergency assistance will be required if pus appears, high fever, signs of cataracts and glaucoma, burns or other health-threatening injuries. In these cases, it is recommended to contact the nearest 24-hour veterinary clinic without waiting until morning.
Carthusian (chartreuse)
The Carthusian cat is considered the most polite among its relatives. She does not like to complain and shows friendliness not only towards the owner, but also towards any guest who comes to the house.
Chartreuse are the owners of round eyes in a shade reminiscent of a cross between copper and gold. This color looks beautiful against the background of a gray-blue “fur coat”.
Representatives of this rare breed are suitable for busy people: the animals are not too playful and know how to keep themselves busy.
Cat's eye and additional decor
A single-color manicure is used very rarely. In most cases, masters and women add a little decor to their manicure, which allows them to complete a stylish cat-eye design.

Drops
In the nail art industry, more voluminous and, one might say, lively design options are gaining more and more popularity. Drip decor looks gorgeous on any nails. A cat's eye with drops will look attractive, impressive and juicy.

Mosaic
For a fashionable design, choose two shades of varnish. They can be related or completely contrasting to each other. The two shades ultimately create unsurpassed shimmers of all the colors of the rainbow, which allows the fashionista to become an even more perfect beauty.

Matte finish
A glossy cat's eye looks quite bright and impressive. Women who want this design and want a discreet look can choose to cover their nails with a cat eye and a matte finish. An elegant shade and a laconic matte layer transform the design and make it divine.

Rhinestones
The cat's eye can be diversified with various stones or rhinestones. Since the design itself is very bright and has shiny details, there should not be too many rhinestones. You can focus on one or two fingers and add rhinestones to the beginning of the plate.

Reptile effect
For the most daring and eccentric women, nail art masters offer to create a reptile effect from a cat's eye. This pattern makes it possible to create a natural-looking reptile skin. The manicure is suitable for special events, as it is distinguished by predatory and too noticeable shine.

Ragamuffin
Despite their large and long body, Ragamuffins are very cute, thanks in part to their large, charming eyes. Their fur is quite fluffy and can reach a considerable length. These pets are distinguished by their obedience, as well as their desire to spend time in the arms of their owner.
Ragamuffins' actions during childhood are more reminiscent of puppies than kittens. Young representatives of the breed love to play fetch (“fetch an object”), learn new tricks, and even go for walks. However, they are very domestic cats and prefer to be with their family.
Norwegian forest
The cat with very large eyes from Norway is a very beautiful and relatively rare breed of long-haired native cats of northern latitudes. The breed was formed independently by natural crossing of wild cats from Scandinavian forests with Angora cats imported in the 16th century. This crossing contributed not only to the improvement of wool and its insulation, but also to the formation of a large animal, very graceful in structure, which cannot in any way be called outbred, although in fact it was such for a long time.
The first wave of universal love for the breed occurred in the 1930s, when the first representatives of the breed, which had already undergone some selection sampling, were presented at an international exhibition in Germany.
The breed was once again paid attention to in the 1970s, at which time the question arose about the targeted selection of Norwegian forest cats, since the gene pool of the breed was seriously damaged during wartime. The standard was achieved by 1977 through the efforts of the Norwegian Association of Pedigree Cat Fanciers.
Now the breed is in competition with Maine Coons, although it is difficult to call these two large breeds close. The Maine Coon, despite its size, is a gentle creature, while the Norwegian Forest cat is a Viking cat, for which tenderness and lisping from its owner is more of a burden than a pleasure. The Nordic character makes the breed an observer cat; the Norwegian purebred cat plays actively until the age of one year, and after growing up, the craving for games disappears. For this reason, as an adult, the breed loves to be walked on a harness.
Ocicat
This playful cat loves attention. She resembles a wild predator, but at the same time she shows love for her owner.
Ocicats come in medium to large sizes. Their body is covered with smooth fur with spots located in different places, and, interestingly, each strand of the “fur coat” is colored in more than one color.
Ocicats appeared as a result of crossing Siamese with Abyssinians, and later the genes of the American Shorthair were added. The breed was registered in 1966.
Naturally playful animals perceive every object in the house as a potential toy. They are friendly and enjoy meeting new people. Ocicats can't stand being alone, so getting a furry companion is a good idea.
Cats of this breed are full of energy and intellectually developed. They do not have a need for specific exercise, but animals do need a lot of stimulating items.
Unlike other representatives of the cat family, ocicatas love water, so when taking a bath, you need to keep an eye on your pets.
Cat's night vision
It would be a mistake to say that cats see in complete darkness. Like any mammal whose eyes see only by reflecting light from the retina, a cat needs at least a minimal light source.
However, it is worth considering that due to a special layer located behind the retina, the sensitivity of a cat’s eye in the dark is 8 times higher than human perception.
- In ancient times, being a small predator, the cat could not hunt during the day, as there was a danger of becoming prey to larger enemies.
- Therefore, cats turned into nocturnal predators, and, consequently, in the process of evolution, vision developed, adapted to hunting in the dark.
- And due to the vascular layer located behind the retina - the tapetum, vision became sharper.
By the way, cats owe this special layer – the tapetum – the fact that their eyes “glow” in the dark. This is also one of the reasons to give cats mystical abilities.
In fact, minimal rays of light are reflected from the tapetum and create a “glow” effect, similar to reflective signs on the road. If the darkness is truly complete, your pet’s eyes will not “glow”.
Therefore, to the question “can cats see in the dark?” can be answered as follows: in complete darkness, a cat does not see and orients itself with the help of whiskers, but the fact that “pitch darkness” for a person is by no means darkness for a cat.
California radiant
When creating the breed, the breeders set a goal to breed a pet similar to a leopard. By crossing Abyssinians, Siamese, British and American Shorthairs, Paul Casey sought to demonstrate the problem of big cat conservation.
The California cat's slanted eyes stand out on its wild face and are usually copper or amber in color. The animal has an athletic build, long legs and smooth fur.
Representatives of this breed are suitable for living in a family; they prefer to be at the center of family life, expressing their love and attention.
