So where is 60% of poultry meat? In first place is the ingredient translated into Russian as “ poultry protein ”, its mass fraction is 25%. It is indicated that this component is partially dried and hydrolyzed. In fact, this component in German sounds like geflügelprotein, and its literal translation means “ bird protein ”. That is, we are not talking about any meat - it can be absolutely any parts and tissues of a poultry carcass, some of which have been dehydrated and hydrolyzed using acids and/or other enzymes.

Where does 60% come from? Judging by the manufacturer’s website, 60% is the total share of fresh meat, which later, after heat treatment, became 25%. This information does not make any sense to us; we cannot verify how much raw material was used. And the composition of the final product is much more important.

Next we see a full range of cereals: corn, barley, corn gluten . Regarding corn, we immediately see a technique that allows the manufacturer to raise barley, which is less harmful to cats, higher on the list by dividing the corn into two ingredients. And it is not indicated in what form the barley is added - whole or crushed, because whole barley contains more fiber and other useful substances. Corn is just a cheap source of vegetable protein, which is incomplete for cats.

Next comes the fat component, and this is poultry fat . The problem with this ingredient is that it is not known:

• the true composition of the raw materials from which the fat was obtained - this can be any poultry tissue, including waste that is not suitable for human food;
• How this fat is preserved - the use of artificial preservatives is possible.

The following components are again represented by cereals: this is 4% rice (of unknown quality and purity) and wheat gluten (gluten, this is the same thing). The latter is extremely unhelpful for predatory animals, as it often causes the development of food intolerance, and regular consumption of gluten can even lead to the development of diabetes.

Further, a number of components that are contained in very small quantities and do not affect the overall picture will also be found in subsequent feeds. Let's briefly go over them so as not to return to them:

• beet chips (3% desugared) - these are beet pomace that remain after sugar extraction and contain indigestible plant fiber (fiber);
• flaxseed (2%) is a plant source of Omega 3 and 6 unsaturated fatty acids. The manufacturer did not indicate whether the flax seeds were ground before adding to the feed or whether they were present whole. Experts have not yet come to a consensus on the extent to which flax seed is a complete source of fatty acids for carnivorous animals. After all, predators absorb nutrients obtained from animal ingredients much better;
• cellulose fiber (1.5%) - does not provide any nutritional value for cats and is a source of plant fibers that are not gentle on the gastrointestinal tract of cats;
• salmon oil (1%) - has a number of positive qualities, for example, acts as an animal source of Omega 3 fatty acids. The method of preservation is not specified;
• sodium chloride is a familiar table salt to all of us. Not dangerous, but also not a particularly necessary component of the feed. In this case it is used as a flavor enhancer;
• sunflower oil (0.7%) - vegetable fat, incomplete for cats. Neither the method of obtaining the oil (type of extraction), nor the degree of purification, nor the method of preservation are indicated;
• brewer's yeast (dried) - a natural prebiotic and source of B vitamins;
• dried egg - a product of egg processing, may contain whites, yolks, whole eggs, egg powder, undeveloped eggs and a small amount of shell - nutritional value may also vary, since the exact composition of the component is not determined;
• calcium chloride is a preservative, emulsifier, considered safe in EU countries, but an excess of this ingredient can cause gastrointestinal diseases, and even lead to the development of peptic ulcers;
• chicory powder (inulin 0.2%) - contains natural prebiotic (food for beneficial microorganisms) inulin and fiber; yogurt powder (0.2%) - dehydrated fermented milk product, flavoring additive;
• powder from forest fruits (0.1%) - obviously, these are crushed fruits of wild plants. We find its presence in food strange, since 0.1% is too small to serve as a source of vitamins or fiber, and it is not possible to determine the nutritional value;
• yeast extract (0.04%, rich in beta-glucans) - in such a small amount it is unlikely to have a beneficial effect on the cat’s body;
• marigold flower powder (0.03%, rich in lutein) - lutein has a beneficial effect on vision, although it is very difficult to talk about the benefits of 0.03% of the substance;
• Yucca schidigera powder is an additive that reduces the odor of excrement.

Feed composition

The composition of different types of feed is quite different. To fully understand the composition of the super-premium food of the Wahre Liebe brand, you can consider the composition of the popular and sought-after version of the food of this brand, intended for cats living indoors. The majority of the feed is protein, sourced from poultry, corn, barley, corn gluten, chicken fat and rice (4%).

The food also contains wheat gluten, beet chips, flax seeds and flax oil, salmon oil. The composition is enriched with yeast, minerals, vitamins. The food includes marigold powder and Yucca Schidigera powder.

Wahre Liebe products include proteins from poultry (25%) and fats from chicken fat, salmon oil and vegetable fats (sunflower oil and flax seed oil). Carbohydrates (37%) are supplied to the body by cereal components of the diet.

The composition is supplemented by:

• beets and cellulose;
• sodium chloride;
• chicken eggs;
• calcium chloride;
• chicory;
• berries.

In food for castrates, it’s exactly the same story with animal ingredients. This time the ingredient was translated more accurately - it really is poultry flour .

This ingredient is 28% chicken and 4% turkey. One way or another, the first component is quite good in quality. Although it is cooked before being added to feed, it is a very decent source of animal protein.

But then a little disappointment awaits us: corn, corn gluten and barley - we already talked about them when we analyzed the previous food.

The next animal ingredient was again embellished when translated into Russian - lachsmehl is translated from German as “ salmon meal ”, not “salmon meal”, the difference is small, but there is. The component itself is of good quality, although it is made from salmon carcasses and not fillets. This is followed by 4% rice, 3% beet chips and several more animal ingredients: hydrolyzed chicken protein and a mix of animal fats , represented by poultry and beef fat. There are questions about the fat regarding preservation - the manufacturer kept silent about it.

The component flaxseed oil was translated incorrectly; in the German version of the composition it is flaxseed. It is not known in what form it was added to the feed.

Well, the last component that we will consider is 1% of the dried liver of an unknown poultry - such a small amount indicates that the ingredient plays the role of a natural flavoring, and not a source of animal protein as such.

We have already considered all other additives when analyzing the previous food.

Additives in feed

There are several sources of fat here: firstly, it is poultry fat - Poultry Fat, which for some reason in Russian translation turned into “animal fat (poultry, beef)”. There is also 2% flaxseed (and not oil from it, as it is written in the Russian sticker), as well as 0.6% salmon oil and 0.4% sunflower oil.

The flavoring components here are two ingredients. The first is poultry protein hydrolysate, Poultry Protein (hydrolysed), which was embellished in the Russian translation, calling it “chicken protein (hydrolyzed).” The second is 1% dried chicken liver, Chicken Liver (dried), which, on the contrary, was made worse in Russian by calling it “poultry liver (dried)” on the sticker.

We do not attach much importance to tiny additives such as 0.2% yogurt powder or 0.1% wild berry powder - they are too small to have any beneficial effect on the cat's body. You can read more about the other additives in this product by clicking on the name of each individual ingredient.

We found two inaccuracies in the list of mineral and vitamin supplements. In Russian, the wrong substance is indicated as a source of manganese - “Manganese (in the form of manganese (II) oxide).” On the label it is designated as Manganese (as manganese-(II)-sulphate, monohydrate), that is, the source of manganese is manganese (II) sulfate, monohydrate. The name of the source of vitamin C here should be more precise - “Vitamin C (ascorbyl monocalcium phosphate, sodium salts).” We have corrected this data in the feed card.

In the first place we have corn - this eloquently indicates that most of the composition is a cereal product, and not of the highest quality. Next comes 14% poultry meal , represented by chicken. Or 14% of the share of meat flour is represented by chicken - in fact, it is not entirely clear what exactly the manufacturer had in mind.

Next comes another interesting ingredient - crackling flour . Essentially, these are fragments of subcutaneous fat of unknown animals from which the fat was rendered. This is a product that has undergone deep processing before being added to food, and is quite cheap. It is used more as a flavoring additive than as a complete source of animal protein.

The following components are again represented by cereals: 10% rice, barley and wheat gluten - we have already discussed them above, there is no point in dwelling on them.

What about fatty ingredients? Here again we have a fat mix , represented by chicken and beef fat. And again, errors were made during the translation - in fact, this is not chicken fat, as indicated in the Russian version of the composition, but poultry fat . That is, a much more vague component, whose raw materials and nutritional value may vary from time to time. Again, the preservation method is not specified.

All other components have already been discussed above. We have not yet encountered in this series of feeds:

• extracted green tea, rich in polyphenols 0.02% - can be added to food in both powder and liquid form. Green tea has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, although how effective it is in such small quantities is not known;
• glucosamine 0.02% and chondroitin sulfate 0.01% - these ingredients really have a positive effect on the joints of animals, but such a small amount is not enough even for the effective prevention of joint diseases, not to mention the healing effect.

Compound

We analyze the composition using the example of food for kittens Wahre Liebe Junior.

The translator from German provided a detailed recipe, which he provided with his own comments. Meat flour was put in first place. It’s good that the types of birds and proportions are described. The feed mixture included a significant amount of rice and corn. The manufacturer rationally used high-quality grain and meat processing products - wheat and corn gluten, hydrolyzed chicken protein, beet chips (dry pulp).

I am pleased with the approach to enriching food with sources of omega acids: fish oil, sunflower and flaxseed oil. Chicken liver is a good flavoring additive. The manufacturer did not include medicinal herbs in the diet, and satisfied the need for fiber by adding purified cellulose. Colostrum (a concentrated preparation from colostrum) is a popular dietary supplement that has an immunomodulatory effect.

Egg powder is a complete protein product of animal origin. Ground chicory contains inulin, a prebiotic that stimulates the reproduction of beneficial microflora. Beta-glucans boost the immune system. Marigolds contain luteins, carotenoids essential for night vision. Yucca powder was added to reduce fecal odor.

The developed feed mixture turned out to be deficient in sodium, potassium and chlorine, so the corresponding salts were added. The reason for the inclusion of wild berries and yoghurt is unclear. Perhaps to correct the taste.

Nutritional supplements

A big plus is that the main components of the food satisfied the body’s need for B vitamins. Most trace elements came in chelated (organometallic) form. The feed mixture contains proteins, fats, fiber in the amount of 38; 20; 2%.

The composition of the main components of the food does not correspond to the super premium class. Sellers are lying when they claim that meat products make up 68% of the feed weight. In the initial state this is true. But when dried, meat loses moisture. The mass of dehydrated products in the feed mixture is 25%. However, auxiliary additives corrected the shortcomings.

Sensible

Food for allergic cats starts with 36% rice - rice is indeed better digestible and contains less gluten than, for example, wheat, but in this case it rather acts as a cheap filler. In addition, the manufacturer did not provide us with any information about the type of rice and its pre-processing. Most likely, we are talking about the cheapest, polished, crushed, white rice.

The next component is animal, in Russian indicated as protein from turkey meat , of which there is 20% in the feed. In German there is no word for “meat”. In fact, it is a dry powder made from turkey tissue, very concentrated and practically fat-free. Of course, it is not harmful to the cat's health, but it is a highly processed product. It is better when it is used as an additional, rather than the main source of animal protein.

10% of the salmon meal was also translated inaccurately; the word “meat” is again missing in German.

We have already considered all other components during the analysis of other feeds. I would just like to note that the presence of wheat gluten (gluten) is very unusual for food for allergy sufferers. After all, it is wheat gluten that often becomes the cause of various food ailments in carnivorous pets.

Price and where to buy Vare Liebe

Wahre Liebe foods are quite expensive compared to similar foods from other brands.

Grain-free diets are especially expensive. 400g of such food costs about 380 rubles, a package of 1.5 kg costs 1200 rubles. Pouches weighing 85g can be bought for 100 rubles.

Our verdict on Wahre Liebe food

Let's first highlight the pros and cons of these diets. Let's start with the good news:

• nice packaging;
• quite a wide range;
• reasonable price (882 rubles per 1.5 kg package);
• not the worst animal ingredients.

Let's move on to the cons:

• a large number of non-physiological cereals for cats; in some foods they are in the first place in the composition, which clearly indicates that it is mainly represented by plant sources of protein;
• split - separation of ingredients;
• inaccurate and/or deliberately embellished translation of the components of the composition;
• the manufacturer's statement about the amount of fresh meat from which the dehydrated components were made cannot be verified, and the presence of this data only confuses the potential buyer;
• The method of fat preservation is not specified.

As you can see, the number of minuses speaks for itself. Yes, the “Vare Liebe” food may not be of the worst quality, and the price is, in principle, consistent. But if you have the opportunity to choose food with a more transparent composition and more animal ingredients, it is better to take advantage of it.

Animal ingredients

So, in the first place in all feeds is fresh chicken meat in the amount of 25%. It is an excellent source of easily digestible protein and essential amino acids. The word “fresh” in a product description indicates that the meat has not been deep-frozen or treated with preservatives.

The norm for the total amount of protein isolated proteins: 14% turkey or duck protein dried trout is indicated in fish food . There is no crime in these ingredients: they are of sufficient quality, they are not the main components and, in addition, they give the food an attractive aroma.

But questions are already arising about the next component - this is poultry protein 14%. Since the manufacturer does not indicate which specific bird tissues were used to obtain this product, it is not possible to establish its true nutritional value. The same can be said about 3% hydrolyzed poultry protein - the origin of the raw material is unknown, and the component itself hardly radically changes the overall picture, it is here as a flavoring agent.

The food also contains a small amount of dried eggs - these are not whole eggs, but rather egg processing products, that is, they may contain yolks and whites in various proportions, undeveloped eggs, and a small amount of shell. As you understand, the nutritional value of such a component may vary.

What can you say about the fats in these foods? We cannot rate poultry fat Salmon oil is a higher quality ingredient, but it is much less than poultry fat. Sunflower oil is a vegetable fat that is much less physiological for carnivores. The method of preservation and degree of purification are not specified for any fat ingredient.

By the way, the manufacturer did not deceive: indeed, if we add up all the animal ingredients in any of the three foods, we get 65%. Commendable!

Carbohydrates

Instead of grain, the manufacturer uses potato flakes - a mixture of potato peels and substandard tubers, dried using steam. This ingredient is better than grain components, but its presence in the second position in the composition eloquently indicates its rather high mass fraction, which is undesirable for carnivores. But there is no grain, and this is already a good achievement.

Supplements

The food contains fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs - as a rule, they are in such small quantities that there is no need to talk about any potential benefit or harm to the cat’s body. Lignocellulose and beet pulp are here as a source of plant fibers - we have already considered them during the review of the classic line.

The presence of potato protein in the feed suggests that the manufacturer was still trying to increase the total amount of protein by replacing animal protein with vegetable protein. But since it comes after the main ingredients, you don’t have to pay too much attention to it.
