Many owners wonder how to treat diarrhea in a cat if the animal has suffered from this problem. Diarrhea, otherwise known as “diarrhea,” is an upset stomach accompanied by loose stools. With diarrhea, the cat begins to go to the toilet frequently, the stool is liquid, and there may also often be vomiting, weakness, and lack of appetite.
When a cat has diarrhea, it experiences severe discomfort and stress, so when the first signs of diarrhea appear, the owner should take measures to help the animal.
As a rule, diarrhea occurs in a cat as a result of a malfunction in the digestive system; the cat could have eaten something spoiled, unusual for it, or you decided to change food, and the body gave a similar reaction to the new component.
At the same time, there are other reasons that cause diarrhea - this is the presence of any diseases in the animal, because, as is known, many serious diseases are accompanied by diarrhea. These, for example, include:
- tumors, cancer;
- worms, roundworms and other parasites;
- viral infections;
- bacterial diseases;
- kidney and liver diseases;
- diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including intestinal obstruction;
- diseases of the nervous system;
- fungi and others.
It is, of course, very difficult to independently recognize the true cause of diarrhea, so before you try to help your cat, find out the following: has the cat recently eaten spoiled food, drunk sour milk, etc.
If you are not sure that your cat’s diet over the past few days has been ideal, then you should stop feeding the animal for 24 hours, leaving only boiled water. You can also give your cat activated carbon tablets.
If the cause is a banal upset stomach from food, then the cat’s stool should return to normal. If, after these manipulations, the cat has not returned to normal and continues to frequently go to the toilet with diarrhea, you should consult a doctor, since the disease that caused diarrhea can be very dangerous.
What to do if your cat has bloody diarrhea
Bloody diarrhea in a cat always signals a serious illness! Therefore, do not expect that the cat’s condition will improve and everything will go away on its own. The sooner you contact a veterinarian, the higher the chance your cat will have to be cured and save his life and health.
Depending on the diagnosis, the animal may be prescribed medications, vitamin complexes, injections, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be required (for example, when removing a tumor, intestinal obstruction, or a foreign body in the body).
Nutrition
During treatment, it is important to follow a special diet that will help relieve the gastrointestinal tract.
In the first 12 hours, it is recommended not to feed the pet, but to offer or syringe only water or rehydration solutions. After the specified time, you can introduce boiled rice and boiled meat. Portions should be reduced by 2-3 times during the recovery of the digestive system.
If a cat or kitten is diarrhea due to enzyme deficiency, foods that are poorly digested should be excluded. Most often, milk and dairy products are excluded. During this period of time, it is recommended to include in the diet special food for cats with digestive tract problems. Rice water and an infusion of flax seeds, which have astringent properties, will also be useful.
To prepare the first one, you need to pour the cereal with water in a ratio of 1:7, bring to a boil and simmer under the lid for about 30-40 minutes. For flaxseed infusion, 1 tbsp is enough. Pour boiling water over the seeds and leave for 2-3 hours. Give your pet 1 tsp every hour.
