Pregnant Sphynx: how long does a hairless cat carry babies and how does childbirth go?

When you need help

There are situations in which the cat cannot or does not have time to cope on its own (short interval between births). Therefore, you should be alert if:

  • The release of amniotic fluid and the birth of the baby coincided. You must make sure that the baby does not choke: turn him upside down and shake him lightly. If he sneezed or sighed, everything is fine;
  • the cat did not have time to free the kitten from the bubble. Tear it, carefully wipe the baby with a soft napkin or cloth, use a syringe or pipette to clean the nasal and oral cavities;
  • the cat did not chew the umbilical cord. To avoid blood loss, tie the umbilical cord with a thread and cut it with scissors. Everything must be sterile;
  • if the kitten is too weak and does not breathe normally. Perform very lightly (with gentle finger pressure) cardiac massage and artificial respiration;
  • if the movement of the fetus is difficult or stuck. Lubricate your vagina with Vaseline oil. Make a loop from a soft napkin or cloth and slowly help pull the baby out while pushing;
  • weak contractions. Consult your veterinarian and get a stimulation shot;
  • In any unclear situation, call your doctor.

In what cases is owner intervention required:

- wipe the kitten with a towel, cut the umbilical cord (if the mother does not do this)

-remove fluid from the kitten's respiratory tract if necessary

- difficult passage of the fetus (for example, a kitten that is too large). In this case, it is enough to lubricate the cat’s vagina with Vaseline oil.

- the kitten got stuck in the birth canal. This is a relatively rare occurrence, but if this happens, the owner should be able to help the cat even in the absence of a veterinarian. Use a hand towel or flannel handkerchief to make a kitten loop. Carefully place it on the kitten's body. Without putting much effort, pull out the kitten's body little by little, following the cat's attempts.

- weak contractions. Solution: intramuscular injection (in the thigh, with an insulin needle).

Option 1 Oxytocin. It is placed only if you are sure that the uterus is OPEN. For a medium-sized cat, you can start with a dose of 0.1 ml... look after 20 minutes, if nothing happens, repeat, but this time 0.2 ml, wait another 20 minutes and set 0.3 ml. We carefully monitor that there is no bleeding (bleeding is the volume of a tablespoon, not a drop)

Option 2. Cocktail that stimulates labor: the effect of the cocktail is fundamentally different from the mechanism of action of oxytocin and similar drugs (oxytocin “works” at the level of nerve fibers, “forcing” the muscles of the uterus to contract, and the cocktail stimulates the contraction of the smallest blood vessels without affecting the nerves ... that is why “uterine fatigue” does not occur...)... Moreover, if it is necessary to use oxytocin, “before” it is recommended to inject such a cocktail. The recipe itself: 4 ml (cube) glucose 4 ml (cube) calcium gluconate 2 ml (cube) ascorbic acid, take all components into one syringe, total volume = 10 ml (cube). Single dose for a medium-sized cat = 1 ml. Prick after the birth of the first kitten!

The appearance of kittens

Giving birth to a Sphynx cat is not much different from giving birth to most other cats. On average they last from three to six hours. Each new kitten is born at intervals of 20-30 minutes. The onset of labor is signaled by the breaking of amniotic fluid.

First of all, the cat carefully licks the newborn kitten, removes the amniotic sac (amnion) from it, and clears its airways and oral cavity. After which he bites the umbilical cord and eats the afterbirth. Thus, she replenishes her strength and receives a dose of hormones necessary to begin the process of milk production. As a rule, the afterbirth comes out either with the kitten, or a little later.

The mother pushes the clean, licked kitten with its nose towards the nipples. After the cat has finished tidying up her baby, before the next one is born, she tidies herself up and calms herself by purring. On average, newborn kittens weigh approximately 90-120 grams. Smaller individuals are considered weak and are less likely to survive.

There are times when labor in a Sphynx cat seems to be suspended. All processes associated with them stop, the cat calms down and works with the babies. And after several hours (up to a day), labor may continue again. There is no need to worry or worry about this - there is no pathology here.

Dates of pregnancy

In this state, the pet is more lethargic than usual.
The average duration of gestation for sphinxes is 8-9 weeks. All this time, while the hairless cat is bearing offspring, she is subject to apathy, indifference, and is reluctant to communicate with the owner and other family members. Usually, before the upcoming birth, the animal will choose some kind of box, where it will try to create a secluded corner suitable for newborn kittens.

Description of the breed

Many people spoke quite impartially about this breed, pointing out that sphinxes have no future, since they are unaesthetic animals and sensitive to cold. They argued that the breed was of purely technical interest.

At the same time, many generally considered animals to be harmful and abnormal, since they are not able to provide for themselves on their own and are completely dependent on humans.

If we talk about modern sphinxes, then their description will not be unambiguous, since even one breed may differ in some differences in the exterior, as well as in the type of hairlessness.

Appearance

Modern Sphynxes practically no longer have the main feature - folded skin, which created the appearance of cats similar to wrinkled old men. These days, these are animals that resemble smooth porcelain figurines. It should be noted that kittens do have some excess skin, but this disappears over time as they grow older, although these obvious signs can still be seen on the neck or head.

Nowadays, among the Canadian sphinxes one can still note a significant number of the most folded specimens.

According to many experts, a large proportion of modern Sphynxes are beginning to degenerate and are becoming more and more similar to the hairless Devon Rex of the usual type, with thin skin, relatively round eyes, low-set mustaches, a short head and a bone structure that is uncharacteristic of Sphynxes.

Breed standards

Each breed of hairless cats has its own beauty criteria. In addition, it should be noted that within each breed several variants of the requirements for the exterior of cats can coexist. Sphynx cats, for example, are valued according to both CFA and TICA standards.

The most interesting thing is that experts are of little interest in the fact that an animal has no hair, since they pay more attention to the shape of the head, the constitution of the body, the grace of movements and the general impression created by the breed. As for the details, experts are interested in muscular limbs, with the hind legs longer than the front ones, the paws proportional, the tummy pear-shaped and, at the same time, an elegant tail, although it looks like a “rat”

As for the details, experts are interested in muscular limbs, with the hind legs being longer than the front ones, the paws being proportional, the tummy pear-shaped and, at the same time, an elegant tail, although it looks like a “rat’s”.

Skin folds are more characteristic of the head, muzzle, neck, and shoulders. If you touch the skin covered with delicate down, you feel warm suede

Any body color is taken into account, including those with white spots

A high-breed sphinx, as a rule, has a magical effect on those around it, which is due to the presence of rather smooth lines of the animal’s naked body, as well as the penetrating gaze of its unique eyes.

Character and behavior

As a rule, many are frightened by the unusual appearance of sphinxes, but those who dare to pick up this animal immediately turn into one of the lovers of these unique animals. Sphinxes are not known for their obsessive behavior, although they always prefer to be close to their owner. These animals have a peaceful and friendly character. They accept strangers as their long-time friends and easily get along with other animals in a person’s home.

In addition, sphinxes are considered intelligent, affectionate and affectionate creatures who can patiently wait for their owner if he is delayed for some reason.

These animals completely trust a person and love them if a person treats them the same way. These cats are easy to train due to their intelligence and memory. Moreover, these are strong animals that can reach a height of at least 1 meter without much effort.

Their behavior sometimes resembles that of a dog, since sphinxes are able to bring various objects to their owner. They easily open doors, as well as various cabinets, and can repeat basic tricks. Thanks to their unique appearance, as well as their natural acting talent, sphinxes are loved by filmmakers and photographers.

How long do sphinxes live?

At one time, a sphinx named Bambi set a longevity record, living for 19 years. Since then, no representatives of hairless cats have managed to break this record.

According to experts, the average life expectancy of sphinxes is just over 12 years, which is due to the consequences of breeding

In order for your pet to live as long as possible, special attention should be paid to a healthy diet, attentive care, and frequent visits to an experienced veterinarian.

Factors influencing the length of pregnancy in cats

There is a theory according to which the gestation period of the fetus can last depending on the length of the coat:

  • short-haired animals give birth on average a week earlier than the required period (sphynxes), since they have an increased metabolism of substances in the body, so the fetus develops earlier, but the kittens are born healthy;
  • pets with medium hair give birth to babies on average 3-4 days earlier than expected (British, Scottish fold or straight-eared, Siamese breed);
  • long-haired - carry the pregnancy to term, give birth 5-7 days later than the due date (Maine Coon).

There are environmental factors and living conditions that can prolong pregnancy:

  • proper and healthy nutrition, including all the necessary vitamins, trace elements, minerals and other substances;
  • lack of stress, calm, measured life for a pregnant animal;
  • frequent ventilation of the room in which the cat is located to provide more oxygen to its body.

To ensure that kittens are born healthy, you should periodically visit a veterinarian who will monitor the process. He will tell you what vitamins the owner needs to buy to give birth to healthy kittens.

How long does a cat's pregnancy last?

Let's figure out how many months or days a cat stays pregnant.

A cat's gestation period can vary up to 9 weeks. This is approximately 2 months. It is noteworthy that short-haired individuals usually bear babies for 58-68 days, long-haired ones - 63-72.

The course of pregnancy also depends on the number of kittens: if there are fewer than five, the “maternity leave” may be delayed; if there are more, the cat may give birth earlier.

The normal delay in labor is no more than a week. It is more dangerous if kittens are born a week ahead of schedule - they may die.

How does childbirth occur in sphinxes?

Experienced cat owners determine the approaching birth process by the following signs:

  • a drop in body temperature below 37 °C 1-3 days before lambing;
  • active licking of the vulva;
  • release of the mucus plug covering the cervix;
  • arching the back 4-8 hours before birth;
  • looking for a nest.

Experienced cats climb into the den before lambing; first-born cats can scatter kittens throughout the apartment.

Normal childbirth occurs in 3 stages:

  • Contractions: Bloody discharge flows from the swollen vulva. The cat is straining, convulsive contractions appear and recede every half hour. It can take 12-24 hours from the start of contractions to the birth of the first kitten.
  • The birth of the first baby: the amniotic sac appears, the fluid flows out, the cat releases the baby, bites the umbilical cord, places the newborn on the nipple, eats the baby's place. It is not recommended to allow your pet to eat more than two afterbirths.
  • Birth of the second and subsequent kittens. 10-15 minutes after the release of the first calf, new contractions occur. The remaining kittens are born at the same intervals.

The duration of stages 2 and 3 is 2-6 hours in total. A variant of the norm is considered delayed lambing, when labor has stopped, the mother is busy with the kitten and, suddenly, within 12-36 hours, new contractions begin and new newborns appear.

Responsible owners count the number of kittens and placenta, taking into account those eaten by the mother. Contact a veterinarian, whose phone number should be at hand. In case of unforeseen circumstances, you should stock up on cat milk replacer and be glad if you don’t need it.

How to prepare an animal

Before mating, male cats are vaccinated and treated against helminths and external parasites. Anti-worm medications are given once a quarter, but no later than 10 days before the meeting of the animals. Vaccination is carried out annually, but no later than 14 days before mating.

The main condition for a favorable mating is the absence of diseases and strong immunity in both partners. To do this, owners protect their pets from infections and strengthen the immune system with a balanced diet and vitamins.

female

The rules for mating cats and female cats provide for the creation of safe and favorable conditions. Before meeting, the owner of the female must:

  1. Avoid swimming in the last 5 days. Water washes away pheromones that attract males.
  2. Take care of the length of the claws. This condition applies to both animals, as they may accidentally or intentionally scratch their partner.
  3. Make sure there is heat. Artificial stimulation is not allowed. The use of hormonal drugs is fraught with cancer.
  4. Avoid sedatives. Do not try to eliminate stress with valerian or other popular drugs. A drowsy and apathetic state will cause even more problems. Favorite toys that have a familiar smell will help you cope with stress in a new place.

Mating of cats and cats occurs in the territory of the male. For your pet's comfort, take care of a basic set of necessary things. She will need water and food bowls, a litter box, food and a carrier.

Male

The owner of the male is the receiving party. He needs to take care of comfort and safety. The room chosen for the meeting will have to be cleared of foreign objects and equipped with an anti-slip coating.

If you don’t yet know how mating occurs in cats, then the cat’s first time should happen with an untied partner. The male will gain confidence no earlier than the second mating.

To prepare your pet, follow the basic rules - cut the claws and do not give the cat any medications. Remember that your main task is to control the animals during and after mating. Responsibility for the partner will lie with the receiving party until she is returned to the owner.

The process of mating cats

In most cases, mating of Canadian Sphynxes lasts no more than half a minute. She is accompanied by rather loud cries of a cat and a strong purring of a cat. Just at this moment, an egg is released from the cat's ovaries. However, fertilization does not occur immediately, taking about a day. In some cases, one mating is not enough for pregnancy to occur, and therefore both partners must spend a few more days with each other.

The most favorable time for mating of the Canadian Sphynx is the third to fifth day of estrus. This is explained by the fact that this is precisely the period when females ovulate.

If you look closely at the behavior of the Canadian Sphynx, it will be very easy to understand when mating has completed. Indeed, immediately after the end of mating, the female begins to roll on the floor, turning over on her back, and she can do this for a fairly long period of time. As for the cat, after finishing mating he strives for privacy and begins to wash himself and lick his fur.

Nursery services

There are several “closed cats” in the nursery, which are used exclusively for mating with local cats. In order to use the services of one of these representatives, a mating agreement is concluded and it is quite expensive. The peculiarity of using nurseries is a 100% guarantee of obtaining healthy and purebred offspring, but for this you need to undergo a check, pass all the necessary tests and give the cat a manicure. Only after that the cat is invited to her.

Saving on mating can turn into a real disaster, which is not recommended. So, after saving on dates, you can get motherless offspring in the form of sick kittens that will have to be treated.

Daily procedures will cost a lot and will not guarantee the animals’ complete recovery. Such experiments can harm the cat itself, because untested cats can have a number of diseases that will be passed on to their offspring. Age will not play a role here, as well as many other features and characteristics.

Where to find a mate for your pet:

  • according to the white list in nurseries;
  • according to numerous advertisements on the Internet;
  • at exhibitions that are held several times a year;
  • in special clubs for cats, where this is stated in the rules.

Mating will depend on the title and breeding value of the cat. All necessary documents must be with the owner, who can provide them upon request.

When should you help a cat during birth?

Above we described the normal process of childbirth - the cat gave birth on its own, without outside help. However, there are cases when human intervention is necessary to save the lives of both the mother cat and the babies.

One of the options is when the first kitten comes out along with the amniotic fluid. In this situation, the baby has every chance of choking. In this situation, you should turn the kitten head down and shake it slightly. He will sneeze, the airways will open and the baby will begin to breathe freely.

The next option is giving birth too quickly. Kittens appear faster than the cat can clean them up. To prevent babies from suffocating, you need to help remove the shell from them. Carefully tear it apart, then carefully use gauze to clear the mucus from the nose and mouth so that the kitten can begin to breathe.

We suggest you read: Veterinarian about estrus in cats: how to calm them down

In this case, the cat may not have time to gnaw the umbilical cord. To do this, it should be cut with prepared scissors 3-5 cm from the kitten’s tummy. It is worth remembering that there is a blood vessel inside the umbilical cord, so immediately after cutting the umbilical cord you need to quickly stop the bleeding using prepared means (peroxide, brilliant green, cotton wool). If the bleeding does not stop, tie the end of the umbilical cord with thread. In the future, it will dry out and fall off, respectively, the thread along with it.

If the kitten was born very weak and hardly breathes (or does not breathe at all), then he should be given artificial respiration and indirect heart massage, only very carefully! You need to continue until he starts breathing on his own.

What do you get if you cross a Sphynx and an ordinary cat? You know?

Would you like to know what kittens will look like if their parents are a sphinx and an ordinary cat? This question that interests you has already been answered a long time ago. And they are not as clear as they seemed at first glance. Kittens can turn out either fluffy or completely bald. It all depends on the genes that cats have.

And sometimes exceptions happen. Then cats are born that have similarities with both parents: something in the middle of both breeds. But even in this case, there are owners who take them into their home and love them no less than purebred kittens.

See for yourself what happens from the fusion of a sphinx and an ordinary cat and decide whether you would like such a kitten for yourself.

Prenatal period and childbirth

During one pregnancy, a cat bears up to six kittens. A few weeks before birth, the fetus begins to move, the cat becomes restless and walks around the house looking for a secluded place.

The approach of labor is indicated by:

  • frequent urination;
  • the cat’s desire to find a secluded place and privacy.

Immediately before the onset of labor, the animal refuses food, and its labia swell. During contractions, mucus is released from the vagina; this discharge may contain blood. The interval between contractions should be about half an hour. After a few hours, the amniotic sac appears and the kittens begin to be born. The interval between their births should be about 15 minutes.

Basically, the cat independently frees newborns from the membranes of the bladder and bites the umbilical cord. If the animal does not do this, then the owner must independently break the bladder and cut the umbilical cord. The stump should be cauterized with a five percent propolis solution and the kitten's muzzle and respiratory tract should be cleared of mucus.

It is important that after the birth of each kitten there is an afterbirth. Its delay causes infection and can cause the death of the animal

Kittens that are born should be left under the cat to keep them warm. After giving birth, the cat calms down and puts itself in order. Ensure that newborns find their nipples and receive the colostrum they need to survive. Most often, the birth of sphinxes is painless, but the owner must help the animal and constantly be near it. If contractions are unsuccessful within three hours, you should seek help from a veterinarian. Childbirth can take from several hours to a day and a half.

And a little about secrets.

The story of one of our readers, Irina Volodina:

I was especially distressed by my eyes, which were surrounded by large wrinkles, plus dark circles and puffiness. How to completely remove wrinkles and bags under the eyes? How to deal with swelling and redness? But nothing ages or rejuvenates a person more than his eyes.

But how to rejuvenate them? Plastic surgery? I found out - no less than 5 thousand dollars. Hardware procedures - photorejuvenation, gas-liquid peeling, radio lifting, laser facelift? A little more affordable - the course costs 1.5-2 thousand dollars. And when will you find time for all this? And it's still expensive. Especially now. Therefore, I chose a different method for myself.

Probably, every cat owner sooner or later has a question about how their pet will produce offspring. For a cat that walks on its own, this problem is not so acute: it will most likely cope with childbirth without human help. The situation is different with the birth of a cat living in your home on the sofa.

If your cat is preparing to become a mother, you need to know how the cat's birth process proceeds and what you can do to help her during this time. And many inexperienced owners are interested in how many kittens a British or, for example, Siamese cat gives birth to for the first time.

The onset of labor can be signaled by a drop in the cat's body temperature, which begins about a day before the event. A cat's normal temperature is 38.5°C, and before labor begins it drops to 37 or even 36.6°C.

Childbirth in a cat occurs in three stages. First, the uterus begins to contract and its cervix opens. The second stage is the actual birth of the kitten. The cat's abdominal muscles contract and push the kitten out of the womb.

Most often, it is born in the amniotic sac, which the cat removes and then licks the baby. In the third period, the placenta comes out, and the cat, as soon as the kitten begins to breathe on its own, gnaws the umbilical cord and eats the placenta. Mom pushes the kitten towards the nipple, and she can rest. This period lasts from 30 minutes to 4 hours, after which the cat resumes labor and the remaining kittens are born in the same way. However, often there may not be such a rest period, and kittens may be born one after another.

It is important to ensure that the number of delivered placentas strictly corresponds to the number of kittens born, since the placenta remaining in the uterus will cause serious illness in the cat.

Often, a cat may have a so-called interrupted birth, when a significant amount of time may pass between the birth of two kittens.

If your cat does not resume labor within 4 hours, and you know that not all kittens have been born yet, you need to seek help from a veterinarian.

How to find out how many kittens a cat will give birth to?

To know how many kittens a cat can give birth to, experts recommend conducting an ultrasound examination of the cat a week before giving birth. Then you will probably know the expected number of offspring, and you will be able to navigate the calculation if the cat has a break in labor.

A cat giving birth for the first time may give birth to one kitten, or maybe 2-3. This depends on the cat’s breed, health status, and the characteristics of its body.

Signs of imminent labor

An experienced breeder determines the imminent onset of labor within a few days. This makes it possible to prepare for the process and make it as smooth as possible. The pregnancy of the Canadian Sphynx and the upcoming birth leave an imprint on the appearance and behavior of the animal:

  • the mammary glands swell and colostrum oozes from them;
  • the cat often licks its genitals;
  • the animal may lose its appetite;
  • the nose and ears become cold, the overall body temperature decreases;
  • a pregnant pet is looking for a secluded corner where she tries to hide in order to build a place for herself to give birth;
  • if the expectant mother accepted the place offered by the owner, she often climbs into it;
  • From time to time the sphinx shows restlessness - it follows its owner, meows, rubs against its legs and demands attention.

Rating of the most popular dog foods

When the kitten is born, the female licks it and bites through the fetal membrane, freeing first the head of the cub and then the body. Then the mother independently gnaws the kitten's umbilical cord and eats the afterbirth. She needs this, since the placenta contains a large amount of hormones and other biologically active substances that are beneficial for the cat.

How do you know if your cat is pregnant?

After the planned mating has taken place, the owner needs to make sure of its effectiveness. Not every contact with animals becomes productive, and even more so with purebred Sphynx cats. But if the desired event does happen, you can find out about it by certain signs. From the first week of pregnancy, characteristic changes occur in the appearance and behavior of the animal.

Behavior change

Sphinxes are incredibly affectionate and sociable, despite their extraordinary appearance and unfriendly “facial expression”. In the first phase of pregnancy they begin to require more attention. This period does not last long, and the cat’s mood changes dramatically: the pregnant woman becomes capricious and aggressive.

Eating habits are also changing. A pregnant Sphynx refuses her usual food and develops new gastronomic preferences. Manifestations of toxicosis are possible: in the 3rd week, the cat may feel sick in the morning. We can say that a pregnant Sphynx behaves like all women in an interesting position.

All these changes are caused by a sharp hormonal change in the body: the cat will have to bear offspring and provide them with the necessary nutrients.

This period will end in 2–3 weeks. The pet's behavior will stabilize, the appetite will return and even become stronger. A pregnant Sphynx should be fed more often than usual, but the portions should be smaller. The cat's behavior will become calm and she will sleep more.

External changes

Signs of pregnancy become obvious 3 weeks after mating. They are not difficult to spot because sphinxes are hairless. The nipples become enlarged and take on a milky or pink hue. Weight gain is also a characteristic sign of pregnancy.

The physical changes in an ordinary cat are hidden under the fur, so their pregnancy often comes as a surprise to their owners.

Attitude to food

A female Sphynx can dramatically change her taste preferences. For example, I am happy to eat egg yolk or cottage cheese instead of meat products. Even a short-term refusal of semi-finished products (dry food, etc.) is possible.

Of course, if your pet lives on food produced by well-known brands and consumes little organic food, sooner or later he will return to his usual diet. There's no need to worry about this. But it is important to keep in mind that the diet of a pregnant cat should be adjusted depending on individual characteristics and the advice of a veterinarian.

In practice, a pregnant Sphynx often eats more than usual because it is necessary to feed the embryonic offspring. A categorical refusal to eat is also possible, but it is isolated and not long-term. As a rule, after giving birth, the cat will return to its usual diet.

Is it possible to influence the number of kittens?

This question is usually asked by cat breeders who sell kittens. After all, not only the expected profit directly depends on the number of offspring, but also covering the financial resources that were spent on mating with a good sire, tests, treatment, nurturing and feeding the future “money bag”.

Depending on the regalia of the male, the cost of mating can reach 10 thousand rubles. In most cases, owners of inseminators do not try to in any way influence the male health of their charges. Like we get money for mating, and then your problems: whether you got pregnant or not, how many kittens were born - it doesn’t concern us. This attitude is fundamentally wrong, and both sides should be interested in the offspring. Therefore, before you give money, ask:

  • how often is a cat used for mating;
  • is he eating well?
  • does he have any diseases of the genitourinary system;
  • how many kittens other cats bring from him;
  • Does he suffer from cryptorchidism?

To increase fertility, many professionals advise injecting cats with:

  • Ovariovit is a homeopathic drug, its action is aimed at restoring ovarian function, regulating the reproductive cycle and increasing fertility;
  • Gamavit is an anti-stress, immunostimulating drug that supports the vitality of the body, and has a positive effect on eggs;
  • Vitamin E – prevents infertility, has a positive effect on the reproductive system.

There is even a special scheme designed for 10 days:

  • Ovarium (stimulates the protective function of the reproductive system) - half a cube is administered subcutaneously once a day;
  • Ortilin (reduces the risk of inflammatory processes in the uterus) – one tablet twice;
  • Ovariovit one tablet twice;
  • vitamin E capsule twice a day;
  • Gamavit one cube a day subcutaneously;
  • Catozal (to normalize metabolism, increase immunity, resistance to stress) one cube per day subcutaneously.

Before putting any regimen into practice, consult your veterinarian!

Why does this work?

  • Treatment may worsen estrus symptoms and increase hormone levels.
  • At the same time, the cat becomes more attractive to the inseminator and is ready to attack the future father.

By the way, you can “stimulate” the cat by injecting him with B vitamins a couple of days before mating, which have a beneficial effect on the body’s endurance and activity.

Regarding the opposite effect (low fertility), there are no proven schemes as such. For example, there is an opinion that if after giving birth a cat with multiple births is left with only two kittens, then a certain switch is triggered in the body and the next time the animal will bring exactly two kittens. Although in practice, I personally have never observed such a phenomenon.

You can also do the opposite:

  • poorly fed;
  • keep under stress;
  • exploit more often, forcing her to become pregnant every time she is in heat;
  • periodically use hormones that inhibit the functioning of follicles.

In such living conditions, the body will quickly become exhausted and the cat will definitely stop giving birth a lot, if at all.

Gestation course, number and development of fetuses

How does gestation proceed in cats? Regardless of how many days they carry the cubs, in the absence of any deviations, this process follows a standard scenario. Conventionally, this period can be divided into 4 stages:

  • 3–4 weeks;
  • 5–6 weeks;
  • 7–8 weeks;
  • 9–10 weeks.

During the first pregnancy, most pets give birth to 1 to 3 cubs. Mature females usually give birth to 6–8 kittens. In addition to age, how many kittens a cat can give birth to is influenced by breed, heredity, length of gestation, health characteristics, lifestyle and living conditions, as well as quality of nutrition.

Preparing for the event

Sphynx pregnancy lasts about two months - from 60 to 70 days. During this time, you should get used to the idea of expanding your family and prepare for the event. There is no need to worry about the process itself. As a rule, females cope with everything themselves. Sphynx cats have very well developed maternal instincts, so if the cat is healthy and has not had any problems during pregnancy, trust her. But there are points that you should take care of.

Location requirements

Cats are independent creatures and love to spend time alone and in silence. And during the birth process, cats generally have a special mental state, so they need peace and privacy. It would be better if it was a separate, quiet room. But you can select a secluded corner and put a special cat house in it or build it from a large cardboard box.

The best option is if it opens from the top, but has a small hole on the side so that the cat can get out to eat and go to the toilet. This hole should be located at such a height that small kittens cannot then accidentally crawl out of the box. You need to lay something soft inside to make it warm and comfortable. But cover it with disposable diapers (can be purchased at any pharmacy or children's store). These diapers are very soft, absorb moisture well and are easy to change.

As soon as you notice that the pet has begun to worry, look for a secluded place and drag soft things there, place it in the house and stay with it, gently talking and stroking it. This way the animal will calm down and understand that there is no need to look for a place anymore.

Features of caring for an expectant mother

A pregnant Sphynx cat should be surrounded with care and attention. It is necessary to provide adequate nutrition with a balance of vitamins and minerals. A sufficient amount of protein and calcium in the expectant mother's diet will ensure the proper development of the kittens. The best solution to the problem is to purchase special food for pregnant cats.

Ensuring the psychological and physical comfort of the pregnant woman is no less important. If the sphinx did not have her own bed, you should arrange a secluded corner for her where the birth will take place - for example, install a spacious box with low sides. A soft bedding is placed at the bottom, which is easy to change if necessary. Disposable diapers are suitable for this purpose.

From the second half of pregnancy, it is advisable to protect the sphinx from the need to make sudden movements, protect her from accidental blows and falls, and high jumps. To lift a cat, you need to grab it under the chest with one hand and under the hind legs with the other.

During pregnancy, it is strictly forbidden to carry out antiparasitic treatment - this will harm the offspring. Do not use any medications unless absolutely necessary and without consulting a veterinarian.

If the cat is kept free-range, this practice will have to be stopped during pregnancy to avoid trouble. The sphinx should be protected from contact with the opposite sex.

Important! Sometimes a cat may go into another heat cycle even when she is pregnant. This happens with a lack of progesterone. If mating occurs during estrus during pregnancy, secondary fertilization is possible. Both “batch” of kittens will be born at the same time, but those conceived later will be born non-viable.

Maintaining good hygiene is very important. Sphynx cats sweat more due to hormonal changes. In the first weeks of pregnancy, you can wash them as usual. Closer to childbirth, it is better to limit yourself to frequently wiping the body with a damp cloth. After the procedure, you need to wrap the cat in a warm towel to avoid hypothermia.

False and frozen pregnancy: diagnosis and treatment

Types of pathologiesCauses of the pathological conditionDiagnostic methodsTreatment options
False (imaginary) pregnancy
  • hormonal disbalance;
  • mating with a castrated cat;
  • stress;
  • psychical deviations;
  • problems with reproductive function.
  • palpation;
  • ultrasonography.
Low-calorie diet, therapy aimed at normalizing the production of sex hormones or sterilization.
Frozen pregnancy
  • inflammation;
  • hormonal disorders;
  • genetic abnormalities;
  • pathologies of internal organs;
  • stress;
  • injury.
If not all embryos die, the pregnancy continues. Dead fetuses are released during the birth process along with the living ones. If not a single embryo survives, a miscarriage is expected or labor is induced with medication. After birth, the cat is examined to assess the cleanliness of the uterus. Often an animal that has suffered a frozen pregnancy is sterilized.

The character of the Don Sphynx

The cosmic appearance of the Don sphinxes also determines their character. Reviews from the owners duplicate each other - this is an unearthly “kissing” cat! In addition to the fact that you want to give them an extra peck on the nose for good behavior, the companion cat herself always strives to hug her beloved owner with her paws and kiss him. Some call them obsessive.

Donetsk dogs are not jealous and will get along with your other pets or small children.

It is worth considering that the Don Sphynx is very fond of toys. Well, real children! Therefore, from time to time they need to be pampered with a new toy.

In general, the pebbles are ready to play at any time. These are fireworks cats - they were just circling at your feet, but a moment later, passing the vertical walls and pictures on them, the chandelier and curtains, they were already in the far room.

The Don Sphynx has the habit of choosing the owner of the pack and being loyal to him.

Keep in mind that Don Sphynxes are touchy. They will not take revenge by ruining your shoes or bed, but they will look you in the eye so much that you will have no choice but to beg their forgiveness, kissing your pussy and bringing delicacies from the refrigerator as gifts.

The Donetsk people's intelligence is above average, as is their cleanliness.

There is an opinion that the Don sphinxes have healing energy. This myth is difficult to refute. At least, they, more often than representatives of other breeds, come to “treat” the owner, laying down on his sore spots.

Photos

Due to its exotic appearance, the Don Sphynx often becomes the pet of show business stars and over time they themselves turn into social network stars, posing in funny poses in photos. Although, if you think about it, it is still unknown - who chooses whom and who is the real star here!

Where to buy a Don Sphynx kitten

Unlike many young breeds that are just waiting for world success, the Don Sphynxes are already basking in the rays of glory. In Europe and America, in Russia and Ukraine, nurseries offer beautiful kittens that meet the breed standards and the expectations of people in love with them. The price for a kitten of this breed can vary from 9 thousand rubles to 30 thousand rubles (3,000-10,000 UAH).

The cost is influenced by many factors, among which the reputation of the nursery is not the least important.

Still, how much does a Don Sphynx cat cost? 10 thousand rubles today is an adequate price for a representative of this breed from breeders.

Health

How to determine that the Don Sphynx is not feeling well? Sometimes this can be done by smell. Sphynx cats smell differently than other cats. The bouquet of his personal aroma is spices, milk and the smell of leather. If notes of sourness are mixed into the bouquet, pay attention to the health of your pet.

If the first thing you decide to do is measure the temperature, then remember that in Donetsk it is higher than in humans (39.5 - 40 degrees), and to the touch (due to the lack of fur) they may seem even hotter, so only a thermometer will tell you the true picture.

Make sure that the Don Sphynx kitten does not become overcooled - they can catch a cold even at home.

Of course, the main diseases of Donetsk residents are skin:

    dermatitis, which is caused by parasites, allergens or a lack of the hormone thyroxine; eczema (inflammation of the surface layers of the skin); trichophytosis (a disease caused by a fungus) and so on.

Since Don Sphynxes do not have eyelashes on their eyes, mucus can accumulate in the conjunctival sacs, which must be removed regularly.

The Don Sphynx is not hypoallergenic. The absence of fur does not guarantee the absence of allergies. After all, its main culprit is a glycoprotein found in the saliva of cats. Sphynx cats also have it on their skin, but frequent rubbing and bathing of the cat certainly reduces the risk of an allergic reaction.

Average life expectancy is 12-15 years.
