Proplan for sterilized cats and neutered cats

Among the products for pets with special needs, Proplan food for sterilized cats is popular. The food is available in dry and wet form and has several varieties. The owner should familiarize himself with the composition and characteristics of the food, observe the daily allowance when feeding the pet, and also take into account possible restrictions on use.

According to veterinarians, “Purina Proplan” for sterilized cats is balanced and is used as a preventive measure for the development of kidney diseases and urolithiasis.

general information

Purina also produces a line of food that meets these requirements. In addition to ProPlan, the same company produces lower quality Felix, Friskies and Darling, which often cause complaints from consumers and veterinarians due to their poor quality composition and the presence of harmful components. ProPlan for neutered cats is one of Purina’s premium brands, it can even be called the brand’s flagship.

Wide range of food available in pet stores

Additional information: Pro Plan is produced in three countries - France, Italy, Russia. A mark about the place of production can be found on the expiration date stamp.

There are practically no complaints about the quality of Russian-made products, unlike feed from competing companies, also made here.

Food for sterilized cats is not a marketing ploy; it is not for nothing that they are allocated to a separate category. The combination of two factors - castration and improper nutrition - causes the development of urolithiasis, and cats suffer from it more often than cats. In addition, neutered animals need a balanced diet to prevent obesity due to low activity.

Important! The cat should be given food exactly in the dosage indicated on the package, regardless of whether it is dry or wet. As directed by your veterinarian, the amount of food may be reduced during treatment.

Features of feeding in winter

The cold season is a difficult period for farmers. Short daylight hours, a decrease in the number of walks, and the lack of fresh greenery cannot but affect the productivity of laying hens. You should prepare in advance dried nettles, vitamin hay from herbs (clover, alfalfa), brooms from linden and birch leaves.

In winter, it is recommended to include in the diet rowan berries and crushed pine needles, fish and meat and bone meal, as well as pumpkin and carrots as a source of carotene, and beets (rich in nitrogen compounds). We should not forget about fermented milk products as a source of calcium. Be sure to stock up on gravel stones, which contribute to the efficient digestion of feed.

Modern industry offers various additives, which are also actively used in winter.

Useful properties of Purina food

Royal Canin for spayed and neutered cats

Since the manufacturer of the ProPlan line of food for sterilized cats declares it to be premium class and not economy, you can count on it being balanced, that is, it contains enough proteins, carbohydrates and minerals.

The food contains a whole complex of vitamins, the dose of which covers the animal’s daily needs, so nothing additional is required for administration, unless of course the doctor requires it.

For many domestic cats, after sterilization, the diet consists entirely of dry food.

Like any other dietary cat food, Pro Plan for neutered cats is low in calories. The fiber present in the composition gives the animal a feeling of fullness, but there is no overeating.

If my pet won't eat dry kibble, can I soak it in water?

  • It is best to consult with your veterinarian, he will answer all your questions, taking into account the characteristics of your dog.
  • There are small tips that will help you determine whether you need to do this or not. They are given below:
  • If your dog likes dry food, but soaked in water. Soak it for her.
  • If your pet has dental problems, soaked food will help avoid pain. It is very difficult for very small puppies to chew on such hard granules. It will be easier for them to eat soaked food.
  • If you know about digestive problems or have diseases of this system, then be sure to soak with water.

Composition of ProPlan feed

Food for sterilized cats and kittens - what is the best and best

The fact that this company produces mainly cheap food does not mean that the expensive line is not worth buying. But you should always pay attention to the composition of the product. Here is the list of ingredients of Proplan food for castrated cats with turkey flavor:

  • turkey 20% - a source of animal protein, the percentage of content is quite high;
  • dry poultry protein (as a rule, by “poultry” we mean chicken, as it is the cheapest);
  • plant components as a source of protein and fiber - rice, corn and wheat gluten, as well as wheat fiber;
  • animal and fish fat;
  • egg powder (or rather, “dried egg”, but what exactly it is is difficult to say);
  • a complex of minerals, various amino acids, preservatives, vitamins;
  • food additive to impart taste and aroma to feed;
  • yeast.

Composition of Pro Plan Sterilized dry food indicated on the packaging

Unlike cheaper analogues, Pro Plan has a pleasant weak aroma; the flavoring additive in its composition does not cause any disgust or addiction in the animal, and this is a big plus.

Important! If the cat refuses to eat, his fur has become worse, signs of an eating disorder have begun to appear, perhaps the new food simply did not suit him.

But before you change your cat's diet, you need to consult a veterinarian, since such signs can also be a symptom of a disease.

The composition of wet food is indicated more vaguely (processed products of meat, fish, vegetable protein without specifying the source), and it is not specified which food additives and dyes are used.

Reviews

Veterinarian review

Pro Plan is low in nutrition and contains many ballast allergenic substances - corn, wheat, soy. In addition, the manufacturer does not indicate the type and percentage of raw materials. It is impossible to determine what kind of meat was used in production: dried, frozen or fresh. It is also unknown which parts of the carcasses were put into pellets: fillets, offal or paws, heads, wings, etc.

I don’t even know what class to put Pro Plan into. On the one hand, this diet has a premium attitude, on the other hand, it contains chemical flavoring additives that are used in economy category drying.

In any case, I don't recommend Pro Plan. Even among the premium ones there are better and cheaper foods.

Customer Reviews

Maryana: “We tried different foods, but the dog was allergic to everything. Then the doctor recommended Pro Plan with salmon. It fit perfectly. We take 18 kg bags and burst them on both cheeks.”

Fatinia2015: “We started feeding the puppy Pro Plan on the advice of the breeder. This is our first dog, so we trusted him. However, in vain: the dog seemed to feel fine, but his eyes were leaking, his hair was coming out a little, and the piles were huge. Then they finished reading the ingredients and were horrified: there was almost no meat, just grain. My pet likes the crackers, but we think it’s because of the flavorings. And there is zero benefit. We will change the food."

How much does food cost and where to buy it?

There is no need to go to a neighboring country, for example, Finland, to get this food. Pro Plan is widely represented in Russian retail and online stores. Although you cannot find it in department stores and hypermarkets, unlike economy-class products, almost all specialized pet stores have it in their assortment.

Note! Feed in small specialized stores can be much more expensive than in online stores.

Packs of dry food up to 3 kg, as well as canned food and pouches individually can be bought in many small convenience stores.

Prices for bags of 10 kg on average in Russia start from 5,000 rubles; in Moscow and St. Petersburg you can find cheaper ones, for 4,500 rubles. Packages of 7 kg are less common on sale; with turkey and rabbit they cost from 3,600 rubles, with salmon from 4,000 rubles.

Food in a 3 kg package costs from 1,500 rubles, in a 1.5 kg package - from 950 rubles, the smallest packs of 400 g cost from 210 rubles.

A package of 24 spiders can be purchased for 1,070 rubles, individually for 46 rubles. A box of canned food (24 cans) will cost at least 1280 rubles, per piece from 48 rubles.

What is forbidden to feed laying hens?

Owners of small family farms and household plots often consider the omnivorous nature of chickens to be a very good and beneficial quality for themselves. This bird (with the exception of some crosses, for example, the Hungarian giant and Hercules) is indeed unpretentious in nutrition as much as, for example, cattle, in particular dairy cows. However, for the healthy growth of laying hens and obtaining high-quality egg products, you need to know what foods chickens are strictly prohibited from consuming.

  • milk (not digested properly due to lack of necessary enzymes and causes intestinal diseases);
  • cheese, sausages, smoked fish (too fatty and salty foods);
  • alcohol (chicken livers are not able to process it);
  • sweets (the pancreas of laying hens does not produce enough insulin);
  • green potatoes (very toxic);
  • fresh white bread (swells in the intestines, it is better to give dried, ideally black);
  • a large number of apples and pears (hard to digest);
  • too hard food (potato peelings, watermelon peels, citrus peels, large pieces of vegetables);
  • stale, fermented, sour foods;
  • leftover food from the owners (usually heavily seasoned with spices and cooked in large amounts of oil, which is harmful to the digestion of laying hens).

What do veterinarians and buyers think about Pro Plan Sterilized cat food?

Doctors are generally neutral about feeding pets with ProPlan, although they emphasize that if you have the financial opportunity, it is better to take super-premium food. Veterinary dentists are not against using dry food from this line as the main food, since it does not provoke the formation of tartar.

Important! Premium and super-premium food covers the cat's need for vitamins. But you can include sprouted oats in your pet’s diet, and occasionally give various treats (but only in small quantities).

Veterinarians consider the disadvantage of this line to be the insufficiently detailed composition of the food, as well as some dubious ingredients included in its composition. For example, the already mentioned “dried poultry protein” can be either poultry meal or a product of processing bones and skin. The specific names of preservatives and the type of yeast used are also not indicated. The product is not dangerous, but is potentially allergenic (due to the presence of corn and wheat gluten) and contains less animal protein than analogues in the same price category.

Buyers, in turn, trust the ProPlan line for sterilized cats. It appeared on the Russian market quite a long time ago and, in general, its quality has not deteriorated over the past years.

One of the main problems that arise after castrating an animal is obesity, and ProPlan copes with it perfectly. Many people transfer their pets to products of this brand from other premium brands (Hills, Royal Canin), noticing that they are gaining weight, although the feeding rate established by the manufacturer was not exceeded.

Important! You cannot suddenly switch your pet from one diet to another; you need to gradually replace old food with new food in small portions.

Purina ProPlan is a strong middling product in its category, both in price and quality. Not very cheap, but at the same time it won’t make a hole in the budget if the cat suddenly refuses to eat it. However, recently more and more new inexpensive brands have appeared on sale, which may well compete with it.

Portion volume

It is necessary to weigh the dog and find out the weight. Divide the number of kg by the number of meals. This will give you the serving size.

Food standards for puppies and adult dogs are very different. Standards for puppies are given below.

An adult dog should eat 2 times a day, and the amount of food depends on the class of food:

  1. Economy - 700 grams
  2. Premium – 500 grams
  3. Super-premium - 300-350 grams.

What's the difference in puppy food intake?

  • There is a big difference between the amount of food for an adult pet and a small puppy.
  • Puppies need to be fed little by little. The older the puppy, the fewer feedings, but the portion becomes larger.
  • If your puppy is 1-2 months old, he needs to be fed 7 times a day, 100-200 grams.
  • 2-3 months 6 meals of 150-200 grams.
  • When the puppy is 3-4 months old, the number of meals is reduced to 5, and the portion is increased to 250-450 grams.
  • The larger the puppy, the less often we feed him. At six months, your pet should eat 500-800 grams 4 times a day.
  • Up to a year he has 3 times 800-1200 grams.
