The vet talks about the problem!
Problems with the functioning of the paraanal glands of cats have recently become a common occurrence and bring a lot of trouble to pets and their owners. We will tell you how to solve them in this article.
The paraanal glands are normal; if they function well, they do not bother cats at all, and therefore their owners.
But progress locked both people and animals in concrete caged apartments, deprived them of the opportunity to move much and freely, and gave them low-quality food instead of fresh meat and vitamins.
As a result, we have many problems , including the increasingly common blockage of the paraanal glands in apartment cats. How to solve and prevent this problem, read below.
The kitten is bad at licking its butt
What we do now is take a wet cotton swab and wipe her butt :), but after that she still doesn’t seem to lick herself clean.
although maybe we don’t see, she goes somewhere and does everything there? How did someone teach it, tell me? PySy. I found on the Internet: “If you are sure that the kitten is healthy, he should start licking himself, this habit comes with age. You yourself are unlikely to be able to contribute to the formation of the habit of licking a kitten.” is this true or not?
What age is your kitten? And when was he taken from his mother?
Ours was like that. She didn’t wash herself, sometimes she just crawled on the floor with her butt instead of washing. When we washed her after the toilet, she began to dry her wet pants and tail with her tongue. Perhaps this played a role, perhaps not. By the age of ten months, she was already washing herself, and learned to go to the toilet without anything sticking to her pants :)))
A cat's cleanliness directly depends on its health.
And already indirectly from gender and from the example of my mother and others. Cats are always less clean, but this is not laziness, but a demonstration of their presence to possible competitors. By nature, cats should be inconspicuous, therefore they are more ambitious.
There is no need to wash your cat at all. Well, only if it falls out in fuel oil or takes a bath in the sewer. Those. exceptional cases.
It is enough to wipe a small orphan kitten with a damp brush, imitating licking by its mother. At the same time, it will be a stimulating massage and tactile contact, which is very important for the development of normal relationships.

How to remove dried shit from a kitten's butt? Can kittens have their butts washed?
Most often, cat owners are faced with a situation where the cat is basically fine after going to the toilet, but the anus is a little dirty. Sometimes the dirt is so insignificant that you wonder whether to wash it or not touch it at all? In this case, it’s really better not to touch it.
But if the contamination is too noticeable, you can use a cotton pad or cotton swab - they can be pre-moistened in water or vegetable oil (or fish oil). This way you will kill two birds with one stone: you will remove the dirt yourself and force the cat to lick itself. The smell of the oil will remind you that you need to wash yourself. Some owners don’t even wipe the dirty anus, but simply drop a couple of drops of oil there so that the animal can do everything on its own.
The second way to wash a kitten’s butt after using the toilet is suitable in a situation where there is a lot of feces stuck to it: place the cat in the bathtub or washbasin and wash the butt under running water. Sometimes you also have to wash the paws and tail that are dirty.
the kitten doesn't know how to lick itself
I washed my cat very often (paws after using the toilet, etc.) and she stopped licking herself. Then they told me that this was directly related. Most likely, your cat has also been washed frequently. This will pass with time. Try to wash it as little as possible.
Hello! Sorry for the late reply!
Indeed, kittens learn to lick themselves by watching their mother cat and subsequently follow this pattern of behavior. To encourage the desire to lick yourself, you can wet the kitten’s fur, as you did quite rightly earlier; if the kitten is dirty, it can and even needs to be washed. It would be best, of course, to provide the kitten with the company of an adult cat so that he can observe and learn from her actions. The fact that he has seen other cats before, but has not learned, does not mean that he is not capable of this - there are simply periods of development during which a kitten can learn certain actions.
Quotes from Elena Filippova’s book “Raising Kittens” (available somewhere on the Internet):
“Did you know that by licking, cats receive vitamin B, which is necessary for life and mental balance? If a cat is deprived of the ability to lick its fur, it will become stressed and may even die.”
“A cat secretes about the same amount of saliva as urine per day! This fact is explained by the fact that saliva is necessary for a cat to systematically lick its fur!”
How another cat taught dirty Beatrice: “she came to Beatrice and began to evenly scrape her fluffy fur with her tongue, washing Betka from nose to tail several times a day. And my dirty little girl gradually began to realize that something needed to be done with the wool. She also began to wash herself little by little: first it was her muzzle, which Betty rubbed with her paws, then her tail, which fluffed up more and more, and in the end she realized: the whole skin needed to be scrubbed, all the skin. Soon, that is, after another couple of months, the cat became like a cat - it learned to take care of its fur!”
Shit stuck in anus
If the anus is not just dirty, but something is stuck in it, it means that either it is a worm, or the shit has not come out completely, or there is a foreign body that cannot come out. You will most likely recognize the worm immediately. Although sometimes it is confused with clogged anal glands or eaten threads.
Solution: if you are faced with the situation of a worm or a piece of feces sticking out of the anus, the best solution is to use a cotton swab. It is advisable to wear disposable gloves first. Carefully pry up what is sticking out with a stick and pull it out with your hand. Do not pull with tongs under any circumstances!

We deal with protruding threads, ribbons and rain differently: they need to be cut with scissors, and not pulled, because intestines can be damaged. The next portion will come out on its own.
Often, a cat eats human hair - and it is they that get stuck in the anus. You can try to pull the hair out with your hands: it won’t cause any harm when pulled out. But if the hair doesn't want to come out when you pull it, then you can trim it too.

Anal glands in cats, blockage. How to clean?
If you notice symptoms of clogged glands in your cat, they need to be cleaned. How to clean a cat's anal glands? The procedure is certainly not the most pleasant, but it is technically simple and can be done by any owner.
There are three ways to clean the glands.
First way
You should insert your index finger into the animal’s anus and feel the glandular formations on its sides, which are shaped like dense balls.
Using light massage movements, you should empty the contents of the bags outward. Manipulation is carried out on both sides.
Second way
Press the napkin to the anus and gently squeeze (press) the rectal area.
This method may seem simpler in comparison with the first, however, it is not always possible to achieve the desired result with its help.
After emptying the glands, the area around the anus should be washed with an antiseptic solution and a suppository with an antibiotic (Syntomycin) should be inserted into the anus.
The procedure should be carried out with an assistant, wearing gloves and a mask, preferably in the bathroom or in the yard - the secretion may splash out, and it will be very difficult to wash it off the carpet or furniture.
Also, be sure to securely secure the cat with a diaper or towel, wrapping it tightly so that the animal does not run away and injure you.

Third way
The anus and surrounding tissues are lubricated with ointment containing syntomycin or any other anti-inflammatory agent.
A collar is put on the animal to prevent it from licking the anus. A suppository containing ichthyol is inserted at night (the frequency of administration is 10 days).
It is important that the cat does not run to the toilet after this, so they clamp the anus with their fingers for a few minutes, thereby fixing the candle inside.
If we talk about the frequency of cleaning, this is decided individually - for one cat it is enough to clean the paraanal glands once every six months, for another this is not enough, and the manipulation is carried out more often.
IMPORTANT! Self-cleaning of the paraanal glands can only be done in the case of a simple blockage, when the cat has just begun to worry, and you have noticed an unpleasant odor .
In the case of already developed inflammation, and especially a purulent abscess, you must immediately contact a veterinary clinic and not take any independent action.
There may be several reasons why a cat licks under its tail.
There are situations when the natural process of grooming cats can become obsessive. If a cat licks under its tail for an excessively long time and frequently, this may be a signal that there is a problem.
You should not ignore the fact that a pet tends to constantly lick itself in all places. It's possible that she's just in heat and the cat is bleeding from under her tail, however, there is a possibility that the cat has sores on her tail or something more serious. A clear sign of increased licking can be frequent regurgitation of hairballs.
This means it's time to take some action. If it is not possible to figure it out on your own, then it is advisable to show your pet to a veterinarian. After all, only a specialist who works in this field can understand such a situation, and who can identify the true cause and choose the right treatment.
How to teach a kitten to wash its butt?
Some cats do not want to practice hygiene and wash themselves. This is often due to early weaning from the mother, who simply did not teach the cub the rules of the toilet. But this is only one of the reasons why the cat does not wash his butt. It may also be hampered by, for example, a lack of flexibility, which is rare in cats, or obesity. Then the cat urgently needs to reduce body weight, because... this threatens not only a bad odor from the animal, but also diseases of the internal organs.
If the problems are simply related to a behavioral trait, then you can worry about the question of how to teach a cat to wash its butt? You cannot do this by force, nor by example. Therefore, the easiest way is: every time after using the toilet, drop a drop of fish oil on the cat’s anus - and then she will lick herself like a cute little thing. The habit may become fixed - and, perhaps, after a while there will be no need to drip oil: the cat will wash itself.

Licking due to stress
Frequent licking is not always associated with the physiological health of the animal. Perhaps some psychological aspect plays a role in such a situation. Cats like their lives to go on without much change, so any innovation can cause them anxiety. Redevelopment of the house, the appearance of new pets, change of regime and similar innovations cause emotional distress in cats.
Solving a licking problem requires a lot of patience and time, regardless of whether the cause is physiological or psychological. If you provide proper care and attention, then after some time the pet’s coat will be restored, and life will return to normal.

The mechanism of development of blockage of the paraanal glands in cats
Violation of the natural outflow of secretions leads to overflow of the sinuses, the fluid inside thickens, leading to inflammation and severe itching.
Bacteria that are normally found in stool can enter the glands. Typically, these bacteria are flushed back into the rectum during bowel movements. But if secretion is disrupted, bacteria can begin to multiply in the gland, causing inflammation.
In this case, the discharge becomes bloody, and the cat's anal glands become filled with pus. An abscess develops. It looks like a swelling on one or both sides of the cat's anus.
This swelling causes pain in the cat when pressed. If the abscess is left untreated, pressure will build up in the anal gland until the abscess ruptures through the skin, causing the anal gland to rupture.
Also, pus can spread throughout the surrounding tissues, leading to generalization of the process. At this point, the body temperature may rise and the cat's general condition .

Treatment of blockage and inflammation of the paraanal glands
- Cleaning and washing of the paraanal glands with antiseptic solutions (Chlorhexidine, Miramistin).
- Rectal administration of anti-inflammatory suppositories (Ichthyol, Proctosedyl ).
- Antibiotic therapy (Amoxicillin, Tetracycline intramuscularly).
- Surgical removal of the glands is carried out in case of frequent recurrence of inflammation.
I would like to dwell in more detail on the procedure for washing the sinuses of the paraanal glands.
The following manipulations are carried out:
- prepare any antiseptic solution and draw it into a syringe without a needle;
- after this, the medicine is poured into the hole;
- the manipulations are repeated until a more or less light-colored liquid begins to flow out;
- then an ointment based on any antimicrobial agent is placed inside.
Wear a blanket, a postoperative collar or a special diaper - all this will prevent licking of the under-tail area. If necessary, this procedure can be repeated several times.
