The date of appearance of this breed is considered to be June 12, 1995. On this day, the American basset hound breeder Joe Smith had the idea to create a new breed of cats that would be miniature and have a cute, charming face. This idea was inspired by an article about small Munchkin cats published in the Wall Street Journal. The trait responsible for the length of the paws was not of particular importance to Smith; he decided to breed two varieties of cats with long and short paws. So, in the course of work to create a new breed of cats, Napoleon, a classic with regular long legs, and Napoleon, an extreme cat with short legs, appeared. The work of creating a new breed was not easy; Smith spent a fair amount of time, money and effort to achieve the first results. He failed to finally achieve his goal, under the influence of emotions, out of despair, he castrated all the Napoleon breed cats he bred, and then distributed and sold them to new owners, destroying all the information material on working on the breed. But the cats were so cute and charming that new breeders decided to continue Smith's work. As a result, the Napoleon breed was accepted for registration in TICA (USA) and ASSOLUX (Russia). History of the origin of the breed

Well, how can you not know the name Napoleon? At one time, this name thundered almost throughout the world, but the man’s height was not so significant. It turned out that an important person in history had a squat figure, a proud posture, and, in addition, delusions of grandeur. It's funny that after so many years, a new breed of cats was named after him, although Napoleon himself was terribly afraid of cats.
But at that time there was no such breed of cat as Napoleon. It is completely new: June 12, 1995 is considered the starting point. Breeder Joe Smith (USA) was breeding Basset Hounds, but decided to create a new cat breed. Externally, the cats were expected to be miniature in size. And so it happened.
Mr. Smith was inspired by the idea after reading an article in the Wall Street Journal about munchkin babies. A plan was formed in my head: the breeder was not interested in the gene that is responsible for the length of the paws, so he chose for breeding two varieties of cats with long and short limbs. So, as a result of the work, the result was a classic Napoleon, with long legs, and an extreme Napoleon, with short legs.
It took Mr. Smith a lot of time, effort, and finances to create a new breed. What the author of the idea intended did not work out. The upset owner castrated all the Napoleon cats and gave them away to his friends. This story does not have a sad ending. Kitty is so sweet that new breeders have an idea to restore justice. The work continued, today the Napoleons are registered in both TICA (USA) and ASSOLUX (Russia).
The breed has another name - Minuet cat. It was assigned to cats in 2015, so it has not yet had time to take root, but it is not far off.
Kinkaloe
Kinkalow breed history: Kinkalow is another “product” of American felinology and is probably the oldest of the Dwarves. The American Curl and Munchkin were crossed back in the early 90s by breeder Terry Harris, and in 1997 the breed received experimental status at TICA.
The origin of the name of these cats is unknown, perhaps she was named after Harris's first kitten, Louis Kinkaloe. But perhaps the cat’s ears are to blame: kink - inflection, low - towards the bottom.
Today, the development of the breed has stopped; nurseries breeding kinkalows most likely do not exist, but several dozen individual individuals remain.
Kinkalows can be shorthaired or semi-longhaired. In addition, not all of them have curled ears.
Kinkaloo Personality: Kinkalows are playful, talkative and friendly.
Description and standards of the minuet
Persians and Munchkins participated in the production of the breed, so Napoleon inherited the features of both lines. In addition to such a feature as small stature, the cat has a small rounded head shape. The lower jaw is powerful, which is combined with a flattened muzzle.
The ears are short and pointed. The eyes are only round. The standard allows for a strictly straight nose and a small recess.
The body is long, with a wide back and powerful neck. The hind legs are traditionally longer than the front ones.
The color is varied, there can be several shades at once. Napoleon is considered a short-haired cat, but the breed is divided into three subspecies: long-haired, with developed guard hair, downy undercoat, semi-longhair, with short hair length, and short-haired (plush), with upright down and short guard hair.
Cat sizes and weights
The tiny Napoleon cat remains a kitten until old age: its height at the withers will not exceed 20 cm, and its weight falls within the range of 2-4 kg.
The male is larger than the female. Table of approximate weight of Minuet cats by month

How to choose a kitten
Kittens are born with unexpressed breed characteristics, so you should buy a kitten that has reached 3 months of age and whose appearance already corresponds to the breed standard.
A purebred Napoleon kitten has:
- limbs are short;
- the tears don't flow;
- the head is round;
- body contours are soft, smooth;
- the nose is not flattened;
- the eyelids are rounded.
In one litter of a Minuet cat, kittens are born with both short and normal limbs.
A healthy Napoleon kitten has soft, silky, shiny fur, the undercoat does not come out in clumps, and there are no traces of dermatological diseases or parasites on the skin. The ears, tear ducts, anus are clean, the claws are not peeling. The kitten is playful, inquisitive, eats with appetite, does not show aggression or fear.
The seller is obliged to provide the buyer with a veterinary passport with recorded vaccinations and a pedigree. The parents of the minuet kitten should not have genetic pathologies.
Price and nurseries
The Napoleon (minuet) breed is young and therefore expensive. How much a kitten costs is determined by its exhibition category, gender, color, and anatomical features. A dwarf pet is more expensive than a kitten with normal limbs.
Napoleons with silver and golden coat colors are most highly rated.
Breeders have appeared in Russia recently, but they sell exclusively pet-category kittens (companions). A minuet pet of the breed category (for breeding) and show will have to be purchased in the USA.
Operating Russian nurseries:
- Bonny Legend (Moscow);
- Murmulet (Moscow);
- Catnapoleon (Voronezh).
The price of a pet kitten is 30-70 thousand rubles . A minuet in the brid or show category will cost 80-130 thousand .
Characteristics of Napoleons
The childish face will remain with the minuet cat forever. This is a pet for people who would like to keep a kitten to adore, love and cherish.

The Minuet cat is a favorite among families with children. The baby pets the cat, and the cat is happy with this kind of attention.
Kittens are funny, they even jump and it’s hilarious and awkward. This is all because the jump is achieved through the interaction of the long body and short legs. This does not interfere with playing at all, because such a pet will always appreciate the owner’s attention and desire to be together.
Loneliness is clearly not the favorite pastime of the furry Napoleons. There can never be too many people! The Minuet kitten will quickly become attached to its owners; cats from childhood to old age love to be stroked and caressed. This is the same pussy that purrs touchingly and warmly on the laps of household members.
A cat's demand for attention can become obsessive; the breed's character is very sociable! If the owners leave the cat alone for a long time, he will be very worried and sad
A kitten of the Napoleon breed is friendly, peaceful, coexists peacefully with other animals in the house, not only cats, but also dogs and rodents.
Raising and training a pet
The animals are smart, the basic “dos” and “don’ts” are quickly mastered by the animal. The owner's patience will be rewarded. Since cats are quite playful, you can teach them to fetch a small toy. Natural intelligence can be developed. You should first learn how to raise a kitten, which will help you avoid future problems with your pet’s psyche.
It is also easy to accustom the purr to such things as a tray and a place to eat.
Catering
“Napoleons” love to eat tasty and satisfying food, so the first thing owners should watch out for is that the animal does not overeat. The tendency towards obesity in cats of this breed quickly turns cats into fat cats who stop moving and begin to suffer from related diseases.
Cat food must meet the following requirements:
- Do not contain parasites and their larvae, pathogenic bacteria, pesticides, hormones, GMOs and other substances harmful to cats;
- Replenish the animal’s needs for the minerals and vitamins necessary for its body (the diet should contain proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, macro- and microelements.
Of course, all this requires not only time, but also financial costs, studying cat nutrition, maintaining hygiene during cooking and careful selection of products and ready-made food.
Young animals up to 3 months old are fed 6 times a day, kittens 3-4 months old - 5 times, up to six months - 4 times, from six months - 2 times, like an adult cat.
However, if the animal is weakened, suffers from any chronic diseases, bears or feeds offspring, the menu is revised, and the number of feedings is discussed with the veterinarian.
Food and drink should be at a comfortable temperature for the cat: not hot and not from the refrigerator. Water – only fresh, purified through a filter or distilled. Bowls are washed after each meal, water is changed 2 times a day: morning and evening. If there are several animals in the house, each receives its own portion in a separate bowl.
Natural products
What can you give your cat:
- Beef and veal, rabbit and turkey meat, lamb meat: daily. The meat is frozen, and before serving to the animal, it is doused with boiling water to destroy possible parasites and their larvae.
- By-products: hearts, liver, stomachs, chicken necks (ground into minced meat). Raw, with the exception of the liver - it must be boiled.
- Fermented milk products without the addition of flavor enhancers, dyes and chemicals: low-fat cottage cheese, kefir, fermented baked milk, sour cream, natural yogurt, Varenets, cream. Goat's milk in reasonable quantities, a little unsalted hard cheese as a treat.
- Lean sea fish (salmon, hake, trout), squid, shrimp.
- Oil (vegetable, olive) – a few drops daily. Can be added to freshly cooked porridge.
- Chicken and quail eggs. From chicken - only boiled yolk.
- Porridge: oatmeal, millet, corn, buckwheat, rice. Porridge is cooked in water. Semolina porridge with milk, thin and satisfying, is prepared only for children.
- Vegetables: carrots, pumpkin, zucchini, asparagus, herbs (dill, parsley). They are boiled and mixed with porridge or added to meat broth. Some cats will not refuse to chew a piece of cucumber or an apple slice.
It is prohibited to give:
- Pork, goose and duck meat;
- River fish;
- Internal fat, lard, tripe, bones, skin;
- White cabbage, eggplant, garlic, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, peas, chickpeas;
- Whole cow's milk, fermented milk products with dyes and additives;
- Human canned food;
- Sausage, frankfurters, small sausages;
- Alcohol, juices, mineral water, soda, coffee, tea;
- Smoked, fatty, salty, sweet, flour, baked goods;
- Grapes, avocados, bananas.

Recommended food
As for industrial food, cats of this breed can be fed only with food of the highest category, the so-called holistic. These are Farmina N&D, Applaws, Savarra. They use high-quality products, a sufficient amount of protein and carbohydrates (fish fillets, fresh and dehydrated meat, rice, lentils), and fiber. Preservatives are only natural (for example, a mixture of tocopherols), there is also a good vitamin and mineral supplement. But there are no vegetable proteins, synthetic preservatives or other substances hazardous to animals.
Below are recommended holistic foods. Links with the names of the food are clickable, on them you can, within our website, get acquainted with the descriptions of the food and read reviews from owners of Napoleon cats.

Care and feeding of cats
The cat is fluffy, but care is not very burdensome. The animal is clean and loves to wash itself.
To keep your pet's appearance presentable, you need to comb its fur once a week. With a long coat, combing becomes daily. Grooming is still necessary for this breed, although not often.
Your pet needs to be bathed three times a year; it needs to be accustomed to water from a very young age. There are a number of shampoos that will help keep your coat clean and free of tangles.
Although Napoleon is the heir to the Persian cat, he has no problems with his eyes. Clean the eyes as they become dirty with a damp cotton pad.
The claws are often not trimmed, the breed does not damage furniture and does not scratch. It is enough to install a scratching post.
The Napoleon cat is fed two or four times a day. It is necessary to monitor your weight and diet, the purr can get fat. It would be optimal to feed your kitty premium food, without including natural products. There is no point in experimenting with eating from the table.
If the Napoleon is long-haired, he needs malt paste. How to use it, why it is needed and why, you definitely need to know.
Breed health
It was important that the new breed did not inherit genetic mutations and diseases characteristic of the cat world. As a result, if a cat is properly cared for, it will enjoy its health. Pedigree plays an important role here.

It's never perfect anyway. There are individuals with a tendency to polycystic kidney disease.
Unless the owner is a professional breeder, the animals must be spayed or neutered. Vaccination always follows a plan approved by a veterinarian.
Cats live a normal life between 9 and 15 years. Normal life expectancy, unfortunately not the longest.
Diseases
Napoleon is a cat with good health potential, but a tendency to some serious pathologies still exists. Like any hybrid breed, animals have the possibility of mutations. Due to genetic failures, healthy parents have had cases of kittens being born with deformities or congenital pathologies. The following diseases are most often diagnosed in the Minuet cat:
- Kidney problems. The disease begins with polycystic kidney disease, which is complicated by renal failure. The disease can be successfully treated only with timely diagnosis.
- Cardiomyopathy. The pathology does not appear for a long time. The first symptoms appear already at a late stage. Abnormalities in the heart can only be eliminated surgically.
- Retinal atrophy. Diagnosed in kittens. If left untreated, the disease ends in complete blindness.
There may also be problems with teeth, with the spine (lordosis), problems with the eyes (entropion of the eyelids, cataracts). Fortunately, breathing problems are rarely reported in cats of this breed.
Price and where to buy Napoleon kitten
The Napoleon breed is considered exotic, and therefore is expensive. It's nice to have a friendly, sophisticated exclusive! And this is exclusive because breeding such a cat without hereditary health problems is not as easy as one would like. Only a professional can do this.
In Russia there are nurseries specializing in breeding Napoleons. To create, as usual, a Persian cat and a munchkin are taken. Excellent pedigree of both lines is required to produce healthy offspring without abnormalities.
A Napoleon kitten costs 30,000-50,000 rubles. A small fluffy exclusive can be purchased at the Bronze Breeze nursery (Moscow, Russia).
Also, the miniature purr can be found in foreign nurseries.
How to name minuet kittens
A cat that appears like a kitten until old age is usually adored by everyone in the family.
But choosing a name for a baby is sometimes difficult. Too soft will seem like excessive lisp. Ordinary will not add charm either. This means that the nickname should be euphonious, beautiful, and a little soft. There is no need to give a brutal name even to a boy. To prevent choosing a nickname for kittens from becoming painful, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the list of suitable names for funny exotic cats. Nickname table

Conclusions about the breed
What conclusions can be drawn about the miniature cat Napoleon? If we compare the advantages and disadvantages, we will make the following verdict:
- Excessive friendliness has a downside: the cat is often lonely, you need to play with it a lot, talk to it and simply pet it endlessly. If the owners are rare guests in their home, the breed is not for them.
- The cat is affectionate, you don’t have to worry about children and animals.
- If the cat's pedigree is impeccable, he will enjoy good health. Of course, with the right content.
- Maintenance is simple and not complicated. The main thing is to feed him well and keep his coat, eyes and ears clean.
Beautiful, playful and funny cat Minuet is waiting for her portion of admiration!
