The Kurilian Bobtail is a kind and easy-going cat, although very active and energetic, with sometimes an overwhelming level of curiosity. The pet is independent and does not particularly like to be in the arms of its owner.
Bobtail is a wonderful hunter and fisherman.
A city apartment is quite suitable living conditions for him. He loves children, is friendly and is not afraid of dogs; it is only undesirable to keep him with smaller pets.
The cat is insanely devoted to its owner, but usually chooses only one family member as its owner.
Not afraid of frost and loves to swim. Trainable. The Bobtail loves to “talk”; he not only meows, but also makes a very wide range of sounds, up to a light growl.
Keeping such a pet is not difficult. He needs to be brushed once a week and also take care of his eyes and ears. It is necessary to create a special space in the house. In which the cat can play and have fun, which is extremely necessary for her.
Origin story
Among the ancestors of the Kuril Bobtail are the famous Japanese Bobtail: stately and strong cats with the same short tails and a “dancing” gait. The Japanese kept these animals in temples and revered them as sacred objects, but the craving for a free life often took precedence over their usual comfort, and the cats ran away into the wild.
Once on the Kuril Islands, Japanese bobtails began to change noticeably: the cats increased in size, their coat color changed, and their claws stopped retracting inward. And over time, when Russian settlers brought their favorites to the islands - wonderful fluffy Siberian cats - they became friends with them.
As a result of the mixing of blood, the modern Kurilian Bobtail was born - an outstandingly sized cat with thick dense hair and a funny pom-pom tail. Their amazing agility, unfailing hunting instinct and good health captivated people and in the late 80s, cat lovers started talking about them as a full-fledged breed. The first standard was adopted by the Soviet Felinological Federation in 1991, the general one (WCF) - in 1995.
Today it is not difficult to buy a Kurilian Bobtail kitten. There are quite a lot of nurseries operating in Russia, and there is no shortage of private breeders. The cost depends not only on the appearance, but also on the titles of the parents, the conditions of keeping and raising the animal. The price tag starts from 20,000 rubles. Taking an animal from your hands and without documents is fraught with problems in the future.

My smoker Stepasha is 11 months old today, a semi-long-haired saffron, shedding. A very affectionate and smart cat, doesn’t scratch, doesn’t bite anymore, a hunter, walks outside more and more and sleeps, neutered, because he’s probably become calmer or matured. Weighs 5 kg, eats homemade food, neighbors' favorite, loves guests, sociable, gets bored when alone, meows. The smartest cat, handsome.

Advantages:
- Ideal breed
Flaws:
- No
My husband and I recently bought a cat of an unusual breed. It's called the Kurilian Bobtail. This breed is a revelation for me. I read on the Internet that this is an ideal pet for a family with a child. The breed was discovered on the Kuril Islands. No one knows exactly how it appeared. But the end result was a fluffy or smooth-haired creature without a tail. That is, there is a tail, but it’s like a hare’s, a short puffball)))
I'm posting the photos as they turned out. She hurt the child a little) She doesn’t part with her. And through the glass of the balcony. But still, you can see a figure without a tail.
In general, the breed is praised for its ideal character. They learn quickly, remember many commands, are not harmful, they are even compared to dogs. They have another structural feature - long hind legs. From behind, this cat looks like a lynx. The color can be very diverse. I have a red one) Their claws are always out, they don’t “stick” inside) However, they don’t damage the furniture. All you have to do is buy a scratching post and the problem is solved. The breed is very smart! I explained it once and that’s it, the cat learned the material. The toilet is absolutely fabulous! I immediately found a tray with filler and did all the work. The cat doesn't smell like a cat. They do not mark territory and are very clean. I'm shocked. The cat is very affectionate, but unobtrusive. Loves children. Doesn't growl. Curious) Devoted. In short, a real dog!
She doesn't eat dairy or potatoes. Eats everything else)
I bought this kitty for 18 thousand. With pedigree. Parents are champions, that's why it's so expensive.

Advantages:
- Unusual appearance
Flaws:
- Probably intended for living in your own home, not in an apartment
Friends advised me to buy a bobtail as a cute cat, very loving to its owners, incredibly affectionate, loving water; in general, all the advantages of this breed cannot be listed. We bought a mini lynx. Everything is exactly the opposite: he “cute” tailless one chose one owner - me (I was lucky), but nevertheless chose the moments to rip my hands bloody if he didn’t like something, and tore me so deeply that I still his hands were left with scars, the whole family bathed him, one held him in mittens, the rest washed him, not to mention the tattered furniture and marked corners in the apartment. It was impossible to sleep at night with the door to the bedroom open; he rushed at night like a wild animal. We lived like this for 4 years, and one fine summer we took him to the dacha. This is where his element is. After the summer season, they moved in with friends in their house in the village, where they successfully live to this day!

Advantages:
- Catches mice
- gets along well with other animals
- brave
- obedient
- Various coloring.
Flaws:
- Difficult-confidential character
- doesn't like to be held
- proud
- picky.
I won't praise my cat. I'll just tell you briefly about the breed.
My grandmother had such a cat.
The colors of these cats are absolutely varied. White to mottled grey. The nose is pink, black and others. The mustache is usually white. The claws are sharp, the teeth are sharp, he is not afraid of dogs at all! The tail is short.
A little about character. The character is brave, proud, complexly trusting, fastidious, quite obedient. Those whom the cat recognizes have a great life. And who is not, well, not like a dumpling in butter. It is not so easy to gain trust in a cat.
But the way is through the stomach. Catches mice perfectly. Gets along with other animals. But he doesn’t really like to sit in his arms.
Well, I briefly told you about the cat. Sorry for the not very high quality photos!

Advantages:
- Not like everyone else.
Flaws:
- No.
He has been living with us for 3 years now. He has such a cool short tail, it makes him different from everyone else. True, my cat’s father is a mongrel cat, and his mother is a purebred cat, so he turned out to be kind of strange). Over the summer it grows very strongly. And now he has become somewhat immobile. Very good cat!

Advantages:
- Smart graceful animal
Flaws:
- Didn't find it
A little cat named “Charming Peacock” appeared at our house 2 years ago. Beautiful, tricolor) Parents are champions of everything and everyone, this was passed on to ours! Now Polina (that’s what we call our cat) is a champion. The cat has grown and become prettier. The coat is soft, thick, and not very long. Short tail (this is not docking, the spine of the Kuril Bobtail is exactly the same as that of its long-tailed relatives, it’s just that the tail vertebrae are much smaller in size). The cat does not meow like usual animals; it “sings songs” also quietly, barely audible. A very active and playful creature. Ready to play almost all day! The most important difference from other cats is intelligence! The animal is extremely smart! Our Polina follows some “dog” commands - “fetch”, “voice”, “sit”. I think with regular training you can easily bypass Kuklachev. The cat knows where its toys are, all family members (who is better to play with, who to sleep with, etc.). The ancestors of bobtails lived in the wild, which was passed on to today's cats. Plastic, with amazing reaction and jumping ability (even compared to other cats). I advise you to trim your animal’s claws - he might accidentally scratch you while playing with you!
Conclusion:
An incredibly smart animal, kind and affectionate. I advise you to get bobtails!
Like any animal, bobtails love affection and care, so spend time on the animal and be affectionate with it, then the cat will answer you in kind!

As a child, there were many cats, some purebred and some not so purebred.
But the Kurilian bobtail named Eric will forever remain my favorite.
Not only was he incredibly handsome, but he was also raised in such a way that in his entire life no reprimands were ever made to him; he understood everything perfectly. Very smart cat!
The only problem is the abundance of wool in the apartment, but this can be easily solved with a fumigator or something similar.
But this problem must be solved!
Otherwise, after licking, the cat will suffer terribly from an abundance of hair in the stomach and constant constipation.

Advantages:
- They are not here
Flaws:
- This breed has some disadvantages
They gave me a Kurilian Bobtail kitten 1.5 years ago. I've read only good things about this breed. I can tell right away that this breed sheds, as it is written. that no. The character is disgusting. The entire apartment was bombed and now requires a major overhaul with the replacement of all the furniture. We have completely forgotten what it means to sleep. He rustles and meows all night. And they told him it hit him like a slipper, but it’s written that you say it and he understands everything. It’s all nonsense, in general, in 1.5 years the whole family was exhausted. Everyone has the same desire to sleep. Disgusting breed.

This is the most wonderful breed of cats! Very smart, sociable, characterful! I would even say that in many ways my behavior resembles a dog! Understands every word) she was immediately potty trained, and also trained to a scratching post, very playful! And as my friends say, they do not cause allergies. Even if you are allergic to cats. Maybe it’s a myth, but I’ll say it for myself, I live and don’t complain) It’s a very characteristic breed, it comes when it wants affection) but it doesn’t need much) just one cuddle and that’s enough tenderness) it always sleeps next to me) But if it’s a girl, then six months after birth he demands a cat) and very often) the veterinarian said that this is a feature of this breed. So, either sterilize right away, or look for a friend for her) or she will suffer and torment you at least four times a month for several days...

We got our cat after Mukhi went to the Kuril Islands. It was there that he first saw this amazing creature. When my husband worked on a ship there was a cat of this breed and he really liked his character and body structure. Having arrived home from work, my husband and I were inspired to buy a cat of this breed. We read a lot of reviews on the Internet, all were good. So we bought ourselves a cat, Toshka. Indeed, the cat has an extraordinary character, he is very affectionate, at the same time he is very aggressive towards other people’s cats, making it clear that his territory is his. Very sociable, always and everywhere makes himself known. Purrs, talks. Trainable. We carry a ball of their foil like a dog. We never noticed him being mischievous, climbing on the table. His body structure is not the same as that of ordinary cats. The hind legs are higher than the front ones, the tail is pom-pom like a bunny, bouncy. They are very attached to their owners. We didn't regret buying it one bit. And I advise you!

I want to tell you about my pet Kurilian Bobtail breed.
The Kurilian Bobtail is not just a cat with a short pompom-shaped tail and long hind legs - it is a cat with a unique character that combines loyalty and devotion, extraordinary tenderness and at the same time serious hunting instincts.
The name Kuril Bobtail is associated with the place of origin: the breed was created on the basis of aboriginal short-tailed cats from the Kuril Islands, and the shape of the tail is “short tail”, i.e. shortened, curled. The tails of Kurilian Bobtails are unique, like fingerprints - no two are alike.
Despite the fact that Kuril Bobtails are friendly and loyal to their owners, the genes inherent in them by nature make them freedom-loving. This cat “walks on its own”, will never force you to sit in your arms and purr, but will always come at the first call or without it to keep you company at night, and will warm you with its warmth. By the way, there is a belief that the Kurilian Bobtail lies down where it senses a person’s illness and is even able to heal. And in Japan, a cat without a tail is considered a reliable talisman. I don’t know how true this is, our Kurilian Bobtail usually lies at my husband’s feet, but with me he’s always on the side, he likes to stretch out like a human.
Kurilian Bobtails are very mobile and active, they love to play. If you throw a crumpled candy wrapper, they will jump up, catch it on the fly, or first play football with it, and then bring it to you in their teeth. Kurilian bobtails are excellent mouse catchers and fishermen; they say that in the wild they can easily catch salmon, and with the same ease they can catch insects or birds, thanks to their strong hind legs and strong muscular body.
Kurilian Bobtails are very attentive and intelligent, attached to their owners. Kurilian bobtails love people very much and cannot be without human attention for a long time, often walking on the heels of their owner or simply being nearby. One day we left for a couple of weeks and left the cat in the care of our grandmother; she called us and told us how our cat missed us, wandered around the apartment, looked for us, hardly slept, meowed and sat under the door.
Kurilian Bobtails are very clean. Here's one case: one day we decided to take our cat with us on a picnic, and throughout the whole day he never went to the sand or grass to do his cat business, and just endured it all the way home. And upon arrival, the first thing he did was run to his potty.
And how he always sincerely and joyfully greets me in the evening after work! He jumps onto the desk, stands on his hind legs, trying to reach and rub against my cheek.
The Kurilian bobtail is a domestic lynx, an affectionate animal, devoted to its owner like a dog.
I suggest everyone who does not yet have a four-legged friend to pay attention to the young domestic breed of Kuril Bobtail. A charge of positive energy is guaranteed to you!

He’s a very smart cat, he adores his owners (my husband and me), he doesn’t take strangers at all and can hiss and growl. We have a short-haired cat - he doesn’t have a lot of fur. There was a problem during puberty - manifestations of uncontrollable aggression, tore my hands into trash, after castration my character became the same, playful, affectionate
Standards
Standard | Description |
Eyes | Rough, large and expressive. The iris can be any (snow-white cats have both blue and multi-colored eyes). |
Head | Large, with smooth, rounded contours, wedge-shaped. The ears are small, with a wide base and rounded tips. They are slightly inclined forward and are equipped with tassels like those of a lynx. The whisker pads are plump and well expressed. The nose is of medium size, wide, level and straight. The chin is clearly defined, massive, with rounded edges. |
Torso | The body is powerful, long, with developed muscles and strong bones. The hips are raised, the chest is wide. The limbs are not short, but they cannot be called long either. Powerful and strong. Paws are oval, large, spread out. |
Tail | The tail is a distinctive feature of the Kurilian Bobtail. Outwardly it looks like a soft fluffy pompom. The length can be different: in cats with semi-long hair - 11-13 cm, with short hair - 1.5-8 cm. There is an undercoat, but it is quite small. |
Wool | The coat can be semi-long or short. Bobtails with short hair have the same length all over their body. Cats with semi-long hair always have a fluffy collar, “pants” on the hind legs, socks and a plume on the tail. |
Felinologists distinguish 4 types of tails:
- Longest: includes 5-7 vertebrae. At first they form a straight line, and then twist into a loop. But such a tail is considered a serious drawback.
- Tail-broom: here there can be even more vertebrae - 8 or even 10. But the tail remains straight.
- Spiral tail: Also 5-10 vertebrae forming a small hook or spiral.
- The last and shortest tail is a stump. Consists of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 vertebrae that are seriously deformed.
Breed Features
Due to their physiological characteristics, Kurilian bobtails are comparable to a miniature lynx. Thanks to the tufts at the tips of the ears and luxurious fur, which gives the animal a special charm, cats are popular among lovers of domestic predators. Just by looking at the photo of a pet, a person will be fascinated by this beautiful and graceful animal, which has the following features:
- The cat has a muscular body structure. Its back has an arched curve, and its hind limbs are longer than its rounded front legs.
- There are bends and knots on the tail. The length of the tail is no more than 8 centimeters, not counting the fur. Due to the elongated hair on the tail, it resembles a fluffy pompom.
- Kurilian Bobtails have a large trapezoidal head with smooth contours.
- The animal's muzzle is of medium length and has broad outlines.
- The medium-sized ears widen at the base, slightly leaning forward and rounding at the ends.
- The round eyes are set wide apart and at a slight angle. Usually the eye color is in harmony with the coat color.
- The animal's fur can be either very short or quite long.
- In terms of color variety, the Kurilian Bobtail surpassed most other representatives of the cat family. The only thing is that the cat is not characterized by lilac and chocolate coloring.
Based on the length of the coat, breeders distinguish short-haired breeds of cats and animals with medium length hair. Moreover, the latter do not have a well-formed coat of hair: they have a center coat and a dense undercoat. These felines have a collar around their neck and beautiful tassels on their ears. In turn, short-haired representatives of the breed have a tight-fitting coat and, depending on the physiological characteristics, a well or underdeveloped undercoat.
Weight table by month
The weight of an adult Kuril Bobtail reaches 4-7 kg, in cats - 5-9 kg.
Age | Cat | Cat |
1 month | 280-400 gr | 330-460 gr |
2 | 550-750 gr | 880-1.2 kg |
3 | 1-1.2 kg | 1.1-2.2 kg |
4 | 1.3-2.4 kg | 1.8-3.2 |
5 | 1.7-2.7 kg | 2.6-3.6 |
6 | 2.6-3.4 kg | 3-4.4 kg |
8 | 3-4.1 kg | 4-5.2 kg |
10 | 3.2-4.4 kg | 4.4-5.8 kg |
1 year | 3.5-5 kg | 5-6.8 kg |
2 | 3.8-6 kg | 5.4-6.6 kg |
Choosing a kitten
Even before going to the breeder, you need to decide what kind of kitten you need: a pet, a show star or a stud? Then you need to decide what gender the animal should be. Toys, a tray with filling and a supply of food for the first time must be prepared in advance.
You can go to the “browse” when the kittens are 5 weeks old. But it is not recommended to take a baby into the home under 8 weeks of age.
At the breeder, pay attention to the conditions of detention. There should be no strong odor of urine, dirty bowls or overcrowding of animals
The kitten must be:
- active, playful;
- not cowardly, curious and sociable;
- eyes and nose are dry, without discharge;
- the anus is not inflamed, without traces of feces;
- the stomach is soft, not bloated;
- the coat is clean and shiny.
The normal weight of a kitten at 2 months of age is 1 – 1.5 kg. He should not look emaciated or, on the contrary, too large.
Colors
Colors are varied, but certain colors are prohibited in most show systems: fawn, lilac, chocolate, cinnamon, acromelanic (Tonky, Siamese and Burmese) and ticked colors.
The amber color was discovered only recently and has not yet been included in the general standard.
Acceptable colors:
- Tortoiseshell and solid (black, red, cream, blue, white);
- Tabby;
- Marble (red, black, blue, cream, tortoiseshell);
- Brindle (black, red, tortoiseshell, cream, blue);
- Spotted (red, black, blue, cream, tortoiseshell);
- Harlequin (including marble);
- Bicolor;
- Wang;
- With white spots.
In the photo there are cats of the Kuril Bobtail breed of popular colors: black, white, tortoiseshell
Description, what it looks like, what colors there are
The appearance and bright colors of the Bobtail immediately attracts attention. These cats have well-developed muscles, stockiness and a strong build.
Sexual dimorphism in representatives of the breed is pronounced - cats are much larger than cats. The fact that Kurils have wild roots is clearly visible in their appearance, both in long-haired and short-haired varieties.
Black
The color can be either completely black or with a small splash of white hair on the chest and ends of the paws. In old age, Kurils with this color may develop a brown tint.
Black and white color
Black marble
This color is inherited from the wild ancestors of Bobtails and gives the cat a particularly impressive appearance. This color belongs to the tabby color and is most often found among Kurbobs.
Black and white
Black and white is quite varied. It can be a basic black color interspersed with white, randomly located. Another option is a white base interspersed with black. Black and white striped color is very rare.
White
Solid color, in which a blue iris is allowed. The long-haired representatives of the breed look especially impressive.
Ginger
Available in solid or tabby color. The category of redheads includes red and cream colors. The presence of white inclusions is allowed.
Grey
Solid and tabby colors are possible. The presence of inclusions of white wool is allowed. Blue colors also fall into this category.
Tortoiseshell
Kurbobs have tortoiseshell colors according to the standard, only black and blue are possible. In black suit with this type of color there are inclusions of brown, red and white wool, with a predominance of dark tones. The blue color combines light and dark wool of a silver-gray, bluish color. This option is less common and looks especially impressive.
Character and behavior
The Kurilian Bobtail is often compared to a dog, which is not surprising: in devotion to humans, this cat breed rivals all those you know. These cats are calm, affectionate and gentle creatures who, however, can quite stand up for themselves. People are adored and immediately upon arriving in a new home, they choose a leader, whom I will follow through thick and thin.
Your movements around the apartment will not go unnoticed: bobtails will follow you on your heels, trying to show you their devotion and readiness to help in business. Even if such obsession annoys you, you will have to come to terms with it: bobtails have curiosity and a desire to be in company until they are very old.
He gets along with other pets without problems, but this applies exclusively to dogs and cats. Small animals (birds, hamsters, rats, chinchillas) are potential prey for bobtails, which they will chase until they catch them.
Other family members are potential friends for the bobtail. Cats treat children very kindly, carefully and patiently. They will not allow themselves to let out their claws or bite a child, so do not worry about leaving your Kurilian Bobtail and your toddler alone.
What does this pose mean in cats: crouching to the ground, arching their back, starting a mournful song?

Vitamins and minerals
The advantage of using ready-made commercial diets is that they already contain the necessary vitamins and minerals. There is no need to give them separately to your pet. But if a kitten eats natural products, it must additionally receive useful minerals. Recommended vitamins for Kurilian Bobtail kittens:
- Veda from Biorhythm, Russia. The vitamin complex is approved for kittens from the age of 2 months. Number of vitamins per day – 2 pcs. The package contains 2 types of tablets - morning and evening. The morning tablet contains substances that have a positive effect on the digestive and nervous systems and immunity. The composition of the tablet for evening use is substances intended to care for the animal’s fur: beauty and active growth. The course of taking the vitamin complex is 24 days. If necessary, the course is repeated after 7 days.
- Jimket, made in Germany. The package contains pink and green vitamins. Pink tablets contain fruit extracts, green tablets contain seaweed. The general composition of the complex includes all the substances necessary for a kitten. These are vitamins A, E, group B, K. Minerals: calcium, L-carnitine, taurine. Also contains nicotinic acid.
- Beafar, made in the Netherlands. The tablets have a pleasant smell that kittens really like. The composition is represented by vitamins PP, H and B. The complex is approved for use by animals aged 6 weeks and older. Vitamin dosage – 8 pcs. for every kg of body weight.
- Farmavit Active, Russia. The composition is represented by useful substances: vitamins A, B, E, H, mineral elements: phosphorus, calcium, taurine, rutin. The vitamin complex is useful because it helps improve digestion and replenishes the lack of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract. The course of taking the complex is 30 days, after which you need to take a break of 6 to 8 weeks. Dosage – kittens under 3 months of age – ½ tablet, after 3 months – 1 tablet. per day.
Kittens that eat ready-made food should be given vitamins if they have health or coat problems.
Care instructions
Wool
The Kurilian Bobtail's coat does not tangle and is not prone to tangles, so you should not brush them more than 1-2 times a week. These cats simply love to swim (by the way, Kurilian Bobtails are not only good hunters, but also excellent fishermen), so bathe them once every 1-2 months.
Claws
They get accustomed to the scratching post quickly and do not need additional nail trimming.
Eyes
But you need to watch your eyes and ears. Both are wiped with a damp cotton pad soaked in hydrogen peroxide, tea leaves or chlorhexidine.
Teeth
Teeth are brushed 2-4 times a week using a special toothbrush with soft bristles and cat toothpaste (Bars, Doctor ZOO).
In the photo there are cats of the Kuril Bobtail breed: short-haired and semi-long-haired
Castration and sterilization
Animals that do not meet standard breed characteristics and are unsuitable for breeding must be spayed or neutered to avoid unwanted matings.
At what age is it recommended to have surgery?
Castration or sterilization surgery is performed:
- for females - at 8–12 months (preferably before two years);
- for males - after 10 months.
The younger the animal, the easier it will tolerate surgery and anesthesia. Too early surgery can lead to delayed development of the animal.
Caring for your pet after surgery
Proper care of your pet after sterilization or castration surgery involves the following measures:
- immediately after the completion of surgical procedures, a special postoperative blanket and an “Elizabethan” collar are put on the animal to prevent sutures from licking;
- providing the pet with peace and quiet;
- daily treatment of postoperative sutures with disinfectant solutions (hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine, etc.);
- After the operation, the animal cannot be fed for 10–12 hours;
- limiting the pet's activity to avoid damage to the sutures.
After spaying or neutering surgery, it is necessary to put a post-operative blanket and collar on your pet.
If any negative symptoms are observed (wetting or suppuration of the sutures, lack of appetite for three days, etc.), then you should contact a veterinary clinic for advice.
All cats react differently to anesthesia. Some come to their senses almost immediately, while others sleep for a very long time. Our cat moved only along the wall for more than a day; she swayed in all directions. She started eating on the third day, but she returned to normal only a week later, when the blanket was removed.
Catering
High-quality food for the Kuril Bobtail is the key to a long and healthy life. So remember:
- An adult animal is fed 2 times a day: in the mornings and evenings. You should wash the bowls once a day (do not use any detergents other than laundry soap) and pour clean water at a comfortable temperature into the drinking bowl every day. Kittens 2-5 months old are fed 3-6 times.
- Don't feed your cat from your table. Fatty soups, fried potatoes, chocolate and other favorite foods, unfortunately, are real poison for the animal. Sweet, salty, smoked, sour, canned, flour and baked goods are strictly prohibited.
Natural products
Important diet foods:
- Meat (beef, chicken, turkey, rabbit).
- Fish (both river and sea).
- Plant foods (zucchini, pumpkin, carrots, green salad, asparagus, broccoli, parsley, dill, beans).
- Chicken yolk (boiled), quail eggs.
- Porridge (rice, oatmeal, buckwheat, millet).
- By-products (liver, kidneys, ventricles, hearts).
- Dairy products cause metabolic disruption. The same applies to potatoes, baked goods, dog food, and human canned food. But sprouted oat grains for bobtails are one of their favorite treats.
The water should either be passed through a kitchen filter or left for a day in an open container.
Recommended food
When choosing dry food, buy only food from the holistic group. Applaws, Farmina N&D, Jaguar. Other foods are not suitable for Kurilian Bobtails.
Below are the recommended holistic class foods. Links with the names of the food are clickable, on them you can, within our website, get acquainted with the descriptions of the food and read reviews from owners of Kuril Bobtail cats.

Care and health
Since this breed developed in wild natural conditions, the life expectancy of the Kuril Bobtail is long - 15-20 years. These cats are also distinguished by their good health. The gene that causes the tail mutation does not threaten any diseases.
Bobtails may develop eye problems, urinary tract problems, and diarrhea as they age. Therefore, the features of caring for representatives of this breed come down to regular vaccinations and visits to the veterinarian.
The Kurilian Bobtail can cause allergies. Therefore, long-haired cats need to be combed, especially during shedding. Grooming can be done once or twice a year.
Feeding
Cats need to be fed natural food, although high-quality dry food is also possible. It is advisable that the food be hard: it can be bones, cartilage, chicken stomachs.
Remember that the Kurilian Bobtail is essentially a hunting breed. And their diet at home should be as close to natural as possible. However, feeding pure meat such as beef is dangerous. This can lead to protein poisoning.
Best food options: chicken, fish and dry food. The cat must have constant access to water.

The immunity of cats of this breed is enviable. But they also have weaknesses.
The first thing you should pay attention to is the ponytail, or more precisely, the area under it. At the very first inspection, find out whether there are any cracks, irritation or ulcers. Such a short length is a prerequisite for the occurrence of an inflammatory process or prolapse of the anus. The Kurilian Bobtail should be examined regularly, and if damage is found, take it to a veterinarian for examination. Remember: if you feed your cat poorly, he will develop this kind of illness quickly.
Ordinary sea buckthorn oil helps to deal with small cracks: they lubricate the anus area with it and make sure that the cat does not lick it right away.
The second nuance: in Kuril Bobtails, the urine pH is significantly different from the urine of cats of other breeds (7-7.5 versus the usual 6-6.5). Therefore, they rarely suffer from urolithiasis of the alkaline type.
Timely and regular vaccination will help protect your pet from a number of diseases - rabies, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia, calicivirus, leukemia, peritonitis. The kitten receives its first vaccinations at the nursery, but in the future you will have to learn the vaccination calendar and take your pet to the doctor yourself.
Information about the procedures is entered into the veterinary passport. You should not vaccinate yourself (if you do not have the appropriate education: a mistake can lead to serious consequences. Do not try to vaccinate your pet against all diseases at once: this is too much stress on the immune system!
Mr. Cat warns: diseases and vaccinations
Any artificially bred breed has mutations. This statement is also true for bobtails. Despite the fact that selection was carried out not by man, but by nature, the change in the genotype led to its consequences.
It is believed that the structure of the tail has a direct effect on diseases typical of a cat of this breed: hemorrhoids, inflammation of the anus, intestinal prolapse.
A common illness is urolithiasis (UCD). If there are problems with the cat’s kidneys, it is necessary to switch from food for the prevention of urolithiasis to a special one that restores kidney function.
The first vaccination of cats is done at the age of 6-8 weeks. Recommended vaccine against rhinotracheitis (FVP), calicivirus (FCV), paleukopenia (FPV). After 4-6 weeks, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is performed. Based on the results, further vaccination is performed. The rabies vaccination is carried out at the 16th week. Further booster vaccinations are required annually, and screening for parasites (helminths) is also necessary.
