To ensure complete nutrition for cats, the main types of food are produced - dry and wet. But, unlike dry food, which contains about 10-15% moisture, wet food contains 70-80% moisture and is more similar in consistency to natural food. For convenience, the food is available in pouches or canned food and in appearance resembles jelly or pieces in sauce.
The advantages of wet food are convenient dosage, natural consistency and long shelf life when sealed. The disadvantages include a fairly high cost, lack of protection against the formation of tartar and a short shelf life after opening the container.
To understand which wet food is best to feed your pet, we have compiled a rating of popular brands by class: economy, premium, super-premium and holistic.
What is the rating based on?
For ease of ranking, wet food is divided into categories - classes, the most affordable of which are economy and premium. The food is much more expensive - super-premium, and the most refined - holistic.
The latter are recognized by veterinarians as the most suitable in terms of balance and nutritional value for feeding cats; food in the economy and premium categories is inferior in price and quality, but their advertising is shown daily on TV, which increases consumer demand.
Veterinarian advice! It is recommended to focus on who is indicated in the manufacturer's column on the food packaging. The fact is that many brands are manufactured in Russia, so it is not always worth believing in the declared “French” quality.
The basis for the rating of wet cat food is the following parameters: quality characteristics of the product, balanced composition and purchasing activity.
The significance of each of the parameters in compiling the rating in descending order (the first positions have more weight):
- Product quality: what raw materials the manufacturer uses - freshly prepared meat and offal or meat and bone meal; balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, the presence of dyes, preservatives and flavors.
- Breadth of the line: does the brand have breed, dietary, medicinal food, food for kittens.
- Cost: a significant parameter when purchasing food. Does the price of the feed correspond to its composition?
- The opinions of veterinarians and reviews of owners make the final contribution.
All of the following brands are present on the Russian feed market and can be purchased in pet stores or online stores.
Wet cat food
Wet cat food consists of pieces of meat, fish, vegetables and grains. To increase shelf life, canned food is subjected to special heat treatment and then sealed.
Feed texture shapes
Based on its consistency, wet food is divided into several types:
- mousse - all components are chopped and brought to a homogeneous mass;
- pate - products are ground into a homogeneous mass (the composition and texture are similar to human pate);
- lumpy canned food - large pieces of meat with additives in the form of cereals and vegetables (can be in jelly or sauce).
Types of wet food packaging
Canned food is packaged in several different ways:
- tin cans with a built-in can opener (used for packaging pates, mousses or minced meat);
- glass jars with tin or screw lids (chopped meat or pieces in jelly, sauce or broth are placed in them);
- pouches - elastic metallized bags (designed for one feeding);
- lamisters - plastic containers with a soft lid made of polypropylene film (open like processed cheese or yogurt);
- tetra-packs - boxes made of six-layer metallized cardboard (usually, they are used to pack lumpy canned food);
- plastic pots (packs) - an analogue of lamister, only with a metallized film (chopped meat in jelly, sauce or broth is packaged in such a container);
- loaf - vacuum packaging, fixed on both sides with metal clips;
- disposable plastic container (this should be stored in the freezer and used immediately after defrosting).

Plastic pots are an analogue of lamisters, only with a sealed lid made of metallized foil
Tetra packs are made of six layers of metallized cardboard
Lamisters open in the same way as a package of processed cheese or yogurt
Wet food can be packed in a vacuum film secured with metal clips
The disposable wet food container should be stored in the freezer
Opened canned food in glass jars lasts longer than other containers.
Pouches are sealed bags with contents designed for one feeding
Advantages and disadvantages of wet food
Any cat can eat wet food on a regular basis, regardless of age, weight or health status. Canned food is ideal for:
- kittens during the transition from breastfeeding to regular food;
- older cats who, due to tooth loss, are unable to chew solid food.
Wet food is ideal for small kittens during the transition from milk to regular food.

Criteria for choosing wet food
To choose wet food that is most beneficial for your pet, you should follow some rules:
- Make sure that the food packaging is not damaged and that the expiration date has not expired.
- Carefully study the composition of the food indicated on the pack. If cereals are listed first in the list of ingredients, it means that the product is deficient in the protein the cat needs. The optimal moisture content of canned food is about 80%.
- Make sure that the food contains no chemicals - various dyes, preservatives and components for weight gain, but taurine must be present.
- Choose canned food with the softest consistency (mousses, pates) for kittens, and food with large pieces of meat for adult cats.
- For sterilized cats, choose special foods that have a lower calorie content.
To properly feed your cat with wet food, you need to carefully study the composition and follow the recommendations specified in the product leaflet.
Which food is better - wet or dry?
For a long time, there has been heated debate over which industrial feed is better - wet or dry. Some experts vote in favor of “crackers”, others argue that canned cat food is more consistent with the natural food of the animal. The determining factors when deciding how to feed a cat are:
- animal taste preferences;
- the age and health status of the pet;
- cat breed;
- owner's lifestyle.
Veterinarians recommend combining dry and wet food from the same brand.
The main disadvantage of dry food is that it contains little moisture.
This disadvantage can be easily eliminated by introducing wet food into your cat’s diet. To maintain balance, you should adhere to the following basic rules:
- do not mix food of different consistencies into one meal;
- purchase dry and wet food from the same manufacturer.
My classmate Irina’s cat ate dry food with great pleasure, but consumed a very small amount of liquid. The owner was very worried about this fact. Irina consulted a veterinarian, and he advised her to introduce wet food of the same brand as dry food into her diet. True, he immediately indicated that the food needed to be alternated. Since dry food was always freely available to the cat, he began to eat both types of food at the same time. The natural reaction of the housewife is to remove the dryer from the cat’s constant field of view and give out food of different consistency at a certain time. But the cat flatly refused to eat wet food without crackers. He screamed loudly, demanding the usual portion of his favorite dry food, or sat in front of the refrigerator for hours, as if meditating on it. Together, he again calmly wrapped up the dry and wet product, like goulash with a side dish. The veterinarian recommended changing the manufacturer, choosing from premium or holistic. Through a long and careful selection, Irina found good food that suits the cat in both options. The owner is also happy - she says that the pet has become more active, his stool has returned to normal and his fur has become smooth and silky.

Classes of prepared feeds
When choosing ready-made wet food, you first need to pay attention to the product class. In some cases, it is reasonable to immediately abandon the purchase.
Economy
Economy class has aggressive advertising, but almost zero nutritional value. Most representatives contain sugars, dyes and potentially dangerous preservatives. Often the proportion of fat is lower than stated, which can cause disorders of the nervous system and weakness in kittens. Such foods most often contain more grains and water than meat, so their presence on the menu is impractical. Economy class recipes do not meet the natural needs of pets.
Economy class food is easy to recognize: most brands can be seen on TV screens and on the shelves of hypermarkets
Systematic feeding of low-quality feed is fraught with many problems. After eating such foods, kittens often refuse other food. I don’t know what manufacturers add to wet food, but I personally had the opportunity to wean my pet off Whiskas and Friskies diets. I gave them to my kitten unknowingly until I visited the veterinarian for preventive vaccination. My pet starved for 3 days, but did not approach the food bowl until he realized that I would not give him any other food. This is despite the fact that I did not switch it abruptly, but mixed different foods. Judging by other people's reviews, I was lucky. Many people experience problems with the bladder, kidneys and pancreas after eating economy food.
Premium
Premium class, despite the name, is little better than budget food. It differs from the latter in its increased meat content: on average 10–20% versus 4%. Considering that in most cases, not fillets are used, but whole carcasses or, even worse, mixtures of unclaimed offal, the share of high-quality proteins is actually lower. Many premium kitten foods contain grains. Sometimes there are exceptions, but then other products act as filler.
Royal Canin is a classic representative of the premium class and, despite the assurances of the manufacturer and representatives, this food should not be given to a kitten
Premium class is conditionally suitable for feeding kittens, but these diets are best avoided. A friend of mine gave her kitten Royal Canin spiders. This is a well-known brand that is famous for its healing diets, so many people trust it. At first everything was fine, but closer to the year the cat was diagnosed with urolithiasis. And this is far from the only problem that animal owners may face. Most often, pets develop allergies to bird protein and grains.
Super premium
Super-premium wet food consists primarily of high-quality meat products. Cereal additives are extremely rare in them, but if they are present, the manufacturer will certainly indicate the type of grain. Companies often specify the percentage of components. Manufacturers indicate not only the type of meat, but also the type of offal. The ingredients are used either fresh or raw, i.e. they are not subjected to repeated freezing and additional processing. Companies often clarify that they do not add whole carcasses to the feed, but pure meat or fillets.
Bozita is not the most popular brand, but it is one of those that can be recommended for purchase
Super-premium food is the most acceptable option for kittens in terms of price-quality ratio. This is the most budget-friendly food for a pet. Such diets do not cause the development of pathologies and help maintain optimal health of the animal. Only the holistic category is better than this class, but representatives of the latter group are expensive and are not always suitable for pets.
Holistic
Holistic class is the elite among cat foods. Manufacturers do not skimp on ingredients, so the proportion of liquid is relatively low, but sufficient for comfortable consumption (about 80%). The overwhelming majority of the composition is occupied by meat products. Most often there are several of them, which helps provide the animal’s body with various vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Useful substances are presented in their natural form. This increases their digestibility.
There is no special diet for kittens in the Grandorf wet food line, but in the case of holistic cats this is not required: due to its balanced composition, the product is suitable for any healthy animal
Holistic-grade foods often include therapeutic additives, vegetables, herbs, fruits, beans, etc. Often on the lists you can find peas, which improve digestion. Yucca extract is added to slow down the growth of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. This helps reduce the smell of feces. A friend of mine, when she transferred her kitten from economy class to holistic, immediately noted this advantage. However, the opposite situation is also possible: kittens that have been fed cheap foods with grains for a long time often experience indigestion when switching to meat diets. It is important to take a small portion to observe the animal’s reaction, and if problems arise, first transfer the pet to the super-premium class.
Economy class
Economy class food is not included in our rating!
The greatest demand is for food of this particular class, and all thanks to their availability and hyperactive advertising. Such foods contain excessive amounts of grains, cellulose, bone meal, they also contain too much preservatives and flavorings, and the meat content does not exceed 5%. The food also contains a considerable amount of thickeners and dyes that are not allowed to be contained in food products (which cat food is not).
Attention! In Russia, supervisory authorities do not exercise strict control over economy-class food producers, which gives a free hand to some unscrupulous producers.
1. Whiskas . The most popular wet food is Whiskas, which created a sensation in the early 2000s with its appearance. At the beginning of its existence, Whiskas food was sold out at lightning speed - the pets had an excellent appetite, and the price was quite suitable for the owners. Only after a while, with the help of veterinarians, did the breeders learn the real truth about the composition of the feed and the negative consequences of its use.

What is the difference between wet food for kittens and diets for adult cats?
Wet food for kittens contains more fat and protein, as well as increased concentrations of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. The difference is due to the characteristics of the body: babies require nutrients for the rapid development of internal organs.
Kitten foods can be dangerous for adult cats. The latter, with poor nutrition, are at risk of developing obesity, diabetes and urolithiasis. Absolutely healthy kittens can eat high-quality wet food for adult cats without negative consequences, but with the slightest deviation from the norm there is a chance of worsening the condition, so experimenting is not recommended. There are universal wet foods that are suitable for both babies and mature animals.
Premium class
Often the difference between economy and premium class food is almost invisible, only the volume of meat has been increased (most often it varies from 10% to 20%). Due to this, the content of cereals in premium is reduced and animal protein is increased, but only slightly.
The basis of premium feed is still cereal crops, such as wheat, rice, corn. Meat in premium feeds usually still has unclear quality.
“Fresh boneless chicken meat” and “chicken” are not identical to each other. Just “chicken” can include skin, bones, heads and necks, and all the offal.
When choosing wet food for a cat of this class, it is recommended to carefully read the labels, because they also contain dyes, thickeners and preservatives. Premium feed should contain vitamins and taurine.

How to choose the best food for a kitten
First of all, kitten food should be complete. This means that it contains all the necessary vitamins, amino acids and minerals: tocopherol, unsaturated fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, taurine, methionine, etc. Ideally, they should be presented in their natural form, i.e. as meat, vegetables, fruits and herbal supplements, however, in the production of wet food many ingredients cannot be used. As a result, it is necessary to introduce vitamin-mineral complexes into the composition. If there is a deficiency of nutrients, the kitten may have problems at the stage of development of the musculoskeletal system and the formation of immunity. There is a risk of pathologies of internal organs.
Rickets and deformation of the limbs are the result of a lack of calcium in the menu
It is strongly recommended to avoid feeds that contain dyes, thickeners and sugars. They help give the product a pleasant consistency and color, but for cats these parameters have no meaning. Supplements can be dangerous for pets, especially when they are young. Some dyes can cause irritation to the internal lining of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system. This leads to blood flow, inflammation and poor digestion.
Manufacturers are forced to add preservatives to keep the food fresh as long as possible. Vitamin E (tocopherol) can act as an antioxidant, but it alone is not enough for reliable preservation. The absence of preservatives in the ingredient list is a warning sign. This may indicate that the manufacturer is trying to hide some information about the composition from the buyer. It is recommended to give preference to wet food whose list of ingredients specifies the type of preservatives. The substance must be safe.
Canned mango pieces are visible to the naked eye; the fruit is used to enrich feed with vitamins and fiber
The presence of grains in wet food is not allowed. They are practically not absorbed by the cat’s body and are used as an inexpensive filler that allows you to save money. A good quality wet food may contain small amounts of vegetables, fruits or beans. They are necessary to improve digestion and normal removal of hair from the gastrointestinal tract. Such ingredients should not be placed above the meat components.
Meat is the basis of the diet of predators. Ideally, animal products are high on the ingredient list. This can be one variety or several, as well as offal. Most often, the composition includes the liver, kidneys, lungs and hearts. These are good sources of cartilage, proteins and vitamins. It is welcome to indicate the specific type of offal and type of meat. It is advisable to avoid feed that contains such generic names as “poultry”, “chicken”, “fish”, etc.
It is advisable to prefer products that contain animal fats. They are better absorbed by cats. Pets also need vegetable oils, because the balance of unsaturated fatty acids in them is different, but their proportion should be lower. The most valuable ingredients for cats are turkey fat and salmon oil.
Denser wet foods prevent indigestion when switching to solid natural foods and dry diets
The choice of consistency depends on the kitten’s preferences. In some cases it is wise to use pate. This applies to animals with difficulty digesting and small kittens (3-5 weeks). Unless you have special needs, it is recommended to choose fibrous pieces that are closest in texture to meat.
Super premium class
Nutrition of this class should be considered practically the best among industrial feeds: it contains natural meat and a small content of cereals, offal and other additives for balance. Super-premium food should not contain sources of protein, carbohydrates and fiber.
- Sources of proteins are meat and meat ingredients, seafood, eggs.
- Sources of carbohydrates are rice, vegetables.
- Sources of fats are fish and vegetable fats.
The content of harmful substances in food of this class should raise suspicions, so you should carefully read the entire composition indicated on the packaging.
Important! If a super premium food contains meat, there must be an explanation of this component.

According to the recommendations of veterinarians and breeders, Leonardo wet food is best combined with dry food from its series.

- Enriched with vitamins and minerals.

The assortment includes food with flavors of lamb, poultry, beef and pork, as well as a unique product with real Swiss seafood - salmon and shrimp. The formula includes vitamins, fatty acids and an immunomodulator. Some types contain vegetables and herbs.

The manufacturer did not add preservatives to extend the shelf life of the feed. The company compensated for this with a special preparation technology and sealed packaging.
Cat owners note that Happy Cat is accepted by animals without whims. Even pets who are picky eaters eat every last bite. Wet food is recommended by many leading veterinarians for feeding kittens and older cats. The average cost is 60 rubles.

Buyers choose Animonda for its safe composition, appetizing appearance and pleasant smell. There are no cartilages or bones in the diet. - variety of tastes;
- natural smell;

Purina PRO PLAN
Rating: 4.6
At the end of the second category of the rating, it is worth mentioning Purina PRO PLAN wet food. The line from a well-known brand offers premium products and is recommended by veterinarians. The formula includes fish, meat products, animal and vegetable fats, minerals, vitamins. It's a pity that there is no percentage designation on the packaging.
Having studied the composition of pouch with salmon, we were puzzled by the fact that the food is made on the basis of meat, with only 4% added. Other types of meat products contain less than a quarter of the total nutrition. Despite these disadvantages, cat owners note the excellent tolerability of Purina PRO PLAN and the improvement in the animal’s well-being. The line includes products for babies, seniors, and sterilized cats. The average cost is 60 rubles.

The food is completely balanced, but it should be administered very carefully. Not all tailed animals will like pineapples and papaya. We did not find any serious complaints from owners of four-legged animals, but there is still a risk of developing allergies. You don’t have to worry about the quality of the product itself.

Useful video
Grandorf wet food in the video below:
To choose the best food for your pet, it is important to understand what it will be used for: as a main or supplementary diet. Wet food should not be used as a cat's only meal, despite its good composition and high meat content.
A cat needs fiber, vitamins and mineral supplements in small quantities, the high content of which is contained in the line of dry food. In addition, the high moisture content in canned food and spiders reduces the nutritional value of the product. Therefore, we recommend using canned food and pouches in combination with dry food.
Conclusions and recommendations
It's fair to say that the best wet cat food definitely contains meat that is visible to the naked eye once the can is opened. There are no grains, salt or sugar, or unknown ingredients. At the same time, your cat likes this food.
Prices for good wet food are never low, usually from 50 to 120 rubles per jar of 70-85 g. If you see “super-duper healthy wet food” in the supermarket (the labels on the packaging literally scream about this) with a price of only 16 rubles per bag (pouch) 80 g - we can say with 99% confidence that this is bad food.
In general, we hope our article was useful. Now you know which wet food for cats is better to choose, and also how to look at the composition to understand whether this food is good or its quality is in great doubt.
