Why is my cat afraid of an outstretched hand?

Some cat owners notice that their cats do not always behave adequately, from a human point of view, when their owner wants to show affection towards them. There can be a lot of options for such oddities, but in this article we will consider only one of them. This is an inexplicable fear of cats of outstretched fingers, which appears especially clearly when the owner extends such an outstretched hand to his pet.

So, the owner decided to caress the cat and extended his hand to its face, spreading his fingers slightly, and she suddenly begins to get scared, run away, or even behave aggressively - scratch, fight back, or prepare for a retaliatory attack.

The cat is afraid of an outstretched hand.

At the same time, the rest of the time the cat behaves quite friendly. If such a reaction to an outstretched hand does not appear for the first time, then it is not at all difficult to assume that the issue is not some shortcomings in the relationship between the cat and the owner, and not shortcomings in upbringing, but simply a specific reaction to such an irritant. Accordingly, you don’t need to be Pythagoras or Lobachevsky to understand that this body language gesture, which is used by cats much more actively than any other, means a manifestation of hostility. In this case, usually just stop making such gestures and everything will return to its place.

Scared cat.

The fact is that cats perceive people as very strange, bizarre, huge, but still cats, as members of the cat family in which they themselves once grew up. And when cats decide to sort things out by physical confrontation, they often, instead of rushing into a fight without any warning, first extend their paws in each other's direction with their claws outstretched.

Sometimes you can observe scenes when cats preparing for a fight, having assumed aggressive poses in front of each other, begin to mutually demonstrate their military weapons - claws and fangs, thereby wanting to show that their claws are stronger and larger than the claws and fangs of the enemy. In fact, these aggressive cat "war dances" serve the cause of peace rather than the cause of war. The fact is that in addition to the mechanism of aggression, nature has also built into animals a mechanism for restraining aggression.

What is a cat afraid of?

The general public knows almost nothing about this mechanism. Moreover, most people hold views that fundamentally contradict this, it must be said, one of the main mechanisms. The majority of homo sapiens firmly believe that all predators are very aggressive by nature, and not only towards their victims, but also towards other predators (including their own kind), especially if they are their competitors. And the better armed a predator is, the more threatening its weapon is, the more aggressive it should be. It would seem that there is a certain logic in such reasoning - after all, if nature has endowed, say, wolves with powerful jaws, which no dog’s jaw can compare with, then they should be used for their intended purpose. In addition, most people have an extremely primitive understanding of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory, in particular the mechanisms of natural selection. The broad masses have, in fact, adopted only one and, moreover, a highly distorted position - “the survival of the fittest,” although in fact this mechanism is much more complex than the endless determination of who is stronger.

Why are cats afraid of an outstretched hand and try to hide?

In reality, things are as follows: animal psychologists have long noticed that it is the weakly armed species of animals that display their aggression most clearly and uncompromisingly. For example, seemingly harmless sparrows or pigeons (it is not known why they received the reputation of “birds of peace”) are actually distinguished by rare cruelty in their fights and do not cause serious injuries to their own kind only because their beaks and claws are not powerful enough. However, there have been cases when the above-mentioned “birds of peace” literally tore apart other pigeons rejected by the flock. They couldn’t do this alone, so by combining their efforts and driving the victim into a corner, they simply “pulled” it away piece by piece with their tiny beaks.

The cat's reaction is protection from possible danger.

For comparison, we can cite such powerful birds as various eagles, which can kill an enemy with one blow of their beak, and with their powerful clawed paws they can even pierce through many land mammals, such as deer or wild boar, not to mention birds. The familiar crows are also quite threatening birds - with their scavenger beak they can easily knock out an enemy's eye and even damage her skull. However, despite such combat power, these birds do not rush headlong into another conflict. As a rule, conflicts between such birds occur much less frequently than among sparrows or pigeons, both of which are usually associated with the mating season or conflict over prey.

However, the latter are often resolved not by clashes, but by a pack hierarchy. And if such powerful animals rushed into a fight for any reason, then the populations of these birds would have long since become obsolete due to mass deaths in fights. Therefore, fights, as a rule, are preceded by a whole series of rituals of demonstration of strength, the purpose of which is to identify the strongest without forceful confrontation. And in most cases, the conflict ends immediately if one of the opponents decides to retreat.

The cat looks at its owner in fear.

The situation is similar in fish and mammals. The same wolves can, attacking an opponent without warning with just a movement of their jaws, rip open his belly or open his jugular vein, but before attacking they always first carry out intimidation rituals. The same thing, only in an even more striking form, can be seen in gorillas or other super-powerful animals. The cat, however, is not one of these giants, and the possible damage that it can inflict with its weapons is not as terrible as that of its more powerful brothers, but they can still cause serious harm. And in order to ensure the survival of cats, nature endowed them with the same “ritual dances” such as displaying claws and loud screams. And this is precisely where the cat’s fear of splayed fingers lies.

If you bring your hand with outstretched fingers to a cat's face, it may behave aggressively or express fear - start fighting back, scratching, biting or running away. What is this connected with?

If you were to bring a paw with huge claws of a Ussuri tiger or a bear’s paw, open in a strike, to a serenely sleeping or resting person with his eyes closed,

then I think that the result would not have been long in coming, and the result would have been far from joyful. In the same way, a cat, who does not expect any trick from a person at all, at the sight of the splayed hand, becomes horrified and begins to remember all his cat sins that he committed in previous lives. And the result will definitely be either aggression towards the person with the hand, or escape with hide and seek. But since even a small cat is not afraid of anyone and boldly enters into battle, the escape option remains unrealized.

Because it reminds them of their outstretched paw with claws. Accordingly, they believe that you are showing aggression towards them and defend themselves. Accordingly, in the person who signed up in the comments, in the question, cats for some reason respond to aggression with submission.

Our cat is not afraid of an outstretched hand.

When I carefully bring my palm with outstretched fingers closer to his muzzle, he begins to intensively sniff each finger. At the same time, he closes his eyes, apparently processing the information received.

And at the end he starts rubbing his muzzle against my hand.

So this procedure between us is very peaceful and friendly.

Most cats consider this as a threat, and if they themselves do not attack first, they treat it extremely carefully; I had a cat, and he perceived the outstretched hand as a signal to attack.

My friend has two cats of different breeds: (I don’t know which) one is gray, the other is tabby. Hands with fingers spread out react differently. The gray pregnant woman backs away, hisses and leaps onto the top crossbar of the doors. He rides there until everything calms down. The striped one opens one eye, yawns and continues to sleep. Inexplicably?

Be careful because diarrhea in cats can also occur with serious illnesses, so it is best to have your cat examined by a veterinarian. If nothing bothers the cat, there are no other symptoms such as vomiting, weakness, weight loss, blood or mucus in the stool, stool upset may be due to dietary errors. Temporarily do not give food - up to 24 hours, if there is no improvement - you cannot do without a doctor.

No, it’s not harmful if you play with them for about 10 minutes, no more, because firstly, the eyes look at the light all the time, this is bad, but 10 minutes a day is ideal. My cat loves a laser pointer, I really struggle with it, he asks for it all the time.

I apologize, and I’ll even kiss you on the nose if I squeezed my paw or tail too much. I have two cats, very different creatures in character, even surprising. One of them loves to sleep, and for some reason she often does it in the toilet on a rug near the toilet. It still remains a mystery why she chooses this place. She is affectionate and tame, her eyes look at you with such tenderness that if you accidentally offend her you become very ashamed. The second cat has a tougher character, very independent and serious. she only goes into her arms when she prescribes caresses and strokes for herself) When she comes up to me, she begins to purr very loudly, thereby indicating that she is in a good mood. It’s not a joke to joke with her; if you accidentally step on her paw or press her somewhere, you can get a worthy rebuff. She can hit with her paw, although she doesn’t release her claws unless it hurts too much, but the blow is noticeable. In general, I don’t like to offend animals, even if sometimes they deserve punishment, they are the same as us, but many times weaker and still depend largely on us.

According to my observations, the cat categorically does not like anything dirty. She constantly washes herself, she tries to bury any, even minor dirt, even a puddle of water. If he sees clean washed linen or a blank sheet of paper somewhere, he will definitely sit on it, and not next to it. Likewise, when he thinks that a hand or foot is not clean enough and does not smell as it should, it means that it must be washed.

Well, why does it immediately “yell”? Maybe he rejoices at the new day, and his soul sings with this joy)

While he was young, I stopped this singing by frightening him several times with a roar or spray from a humidifier. But then he didn’t stop singing completely, but began to go further into the kitchen and quietly (!) there and continued to “sing” for a while.

Now I don’t forbid him anything. My cat is elderly and honored; he will turn 20 years old in May-June. Let him live the remaining time as he wants. However, it is enough to strictly “tell” him how he calms down.

I just remembered a line from an old nursery rhyme:

Apparently, this is the nature of our pets, this is the internal regime and routine of their lives.

When getting a cat, many people imagine how they come home from work in the evening, settle down on a cozy sofa, and stroke the warm fluffy purr lying peacefully on their lap. But often animals have their own views on joint leisure. They do not go to your hands, they bite and scratch when you try to pet them. Why does this happen?

How to tame a wild kitten

Future owners are worried: how to tame a kitten, what if the situation gets out of control and an unaffectionate cat will grow out of a cute creature. The baby quickly gets used to it and begins to understand:

  • Where is the toilet.
  • Where is the bowl of food?
  • Who lives in the family, from whom you need to hide.

To tame a cat you will have to wait ten days (maximum). Usually this much time is spent on re-educating a street dweller.

It’s worth learning from the very beginning: a kitten’s squeak means “I feel bad,” while purring is a sign of goodwill and contentment.

There is no need to push a squeaking lump into a bathtub of water or allow children to cause pain. The kitten should feel safe and loved. It’s easy to accustom a kitten to handling and rules of behavior (both in the house and at an exhibition): affection, play and treats will do.

Once the baby is in the house, you need to give him time to calm down. You can leave him in an unlocked cage or put him in a low cat basket. Don't forget to place a bowl of water nearby.

In a calm environment, the kitten will soon crawl out of its shelter and go to inspect the territory of the house. Don't pick him up just yet. It is enough to gently stroke him and say a few words in a calm tone. Then transfer to a bowl and praise. In this case, the kitten in your hands will not perceive the action as danger.

Within 24 hours, the cat will begin to trust its owner and may jump onto its lap. The kitten will learn to sit quietly in your arms if you support it by its back. The warmth of the hand is soothing, and any possible fear of heights disappears.

Conclusion

Exactly what methods and means to stop kittens from biting is a personal matter for each owner. It is only important to remember that cats are touchy and capricious by nature, so any excess can cause psychological trauma to the pet, and this is not a joke! Treat the problem with understanding and find out the cause of its occurrence.

Now comes the hard part: be patient and show all your ingenuity to become not only a strict “pack leader” for your pet, but also a loving friend.

METHOD No. 1

1)

Schedule daily play sessions with your cat. These sessions should last approximately 10 minutes and take place when the pet is in a playful mood. Try to organize at least two gaming sessions per day. Increasing the amount of time you play with your cat will correct one of the possible reasons for his attacks and will additionally provide you with the opportunity to teach him not to attack you or bite you.

A fishing rod toy, which you can either make yourself or purchase at a pet store, will allow you to maintain distance between your cat and your legs and arms. Such toys allow you to stimulate your pet’s innate instinct of a predator hunting its prey.

Stuffed animal toys are useful if your cat likes to fight; they are especially suitable for kittens. Choose a stuffed animal that is approximately the size of your pet. If he gets too rough while playing with you, rub a stuffed toy against your cat's belly to redirect his play energy away from you and toward the toy.

While playing, you can also throw one of your cat's favorite toys aside. This will serve two purposes: you will protect your hands and feet from your pet, and it will also stimulate his innate instinct to chase and pounce on prey.

2)

Provide your cat with a stimulating environment. If you keep your cat occupied in her environment, she will probably be less likely to try to attack you. One way to increase stimulation is to provide your cat with a variety of toys and refresh them regularly. You don't have to constantly buy new toys. You can simply use different combinations of these so that your cat is not forced to always play with the same items.

Provide your cat with new objects to explore regularly, such as empty cardboard boxes.

Provide your cat with a puzzle toy. This toy contains treats inside. The cat will have to make some effort to get the treat from the toy, which will keep her busy for a while and provide mental stimulation.

Place the old toy in a new object, such as an empty cardboard box or paper bag. This is useful when you notice that your cat is tired of some of her old toys.

Place climbing frames or scratching posts in your cat's favorite places for her to climb and play.

If your cat is comfortable outdoors, you can purchase or build an outdoor enclosure for her to safely play in outside. Visit your local pet store to learn about the types of outdoor enclosures that you can purchase.

3)

Give your cat a break if he is playing too rough. Get up and leave the room, ignoring the cat, if he plays too rough. You can even go into another room and close the door behind you, blocking your pet's access to you. Since cats try to avoid doing things that have negative consequences, depriving your cat of the opportunity to have fun with you will teach him not to play rough with you anymore.

It is important to get up on your own and walk away from the cat, and not pick him up and carry him to another room. Your cat may interpret your touch as a reward, and you should not reward him for rough play.

4)

Prevent attacks on your ankles. At the most unexpected moment, a cat may jump out of its hiding place and bite you on the ankle. For your cat, the ankle is an easy moving target, especially if your cat has no other toys or objects to play with. When your pet bites your leg, do not try to run away or escape. This is prey behavior, and your cat's predatory instincts will only make him bite you harder.

Instead, try to gently push the cat away. Since prey does not usually move towards the predator, this action will confuse the pet. As soon as the cat understands that you are not acting like prey, he will immediately let you go.

After freeing yourself, stand still for a while and do not pay any attention to the cat. Your pet will stop biting when you stop providing him with the pleasure of catching your ankles.

5)

Install repellent devices in your cat's usual hiding places. If you have identified the places from which your pet likes to attack you, make them unpleasant for him in some ways available to you. There are special repellent devices on the market that you can use, such as upside-down mousetraps or motion-activated compressed air sprays. These devices will allow you to scare away the cat without causing him harm. Eventually, he will stop going to his favorite places due to the fright he has experienced and the sounds created by the devices.

A cocked mousetrap turned upside down will jump into the air when the cat steps on it.

6)

Don't punish the cat. It is very important to remember that cats do not learn from punishment (for example, yelling, hitting, clicking on the nose). Punishments will cause your pet to become fearful and hostile towards you. Punishments can cause confusion in a cat. Since punishment usually follows after incorrect actions, the cat will not actually understand why it is being punished.

Some cats may even see punishment as a challenge rather than as a deterrent.

7)

Reward good behavior. Cats will repeat behaviors that have positive consequences for them. If you give your cat plenty of positive rewards for doing the right thing (for example, playing carefully, curling up next to you instead of attacking your hands), he will continue to do them. Remember that positive reinforcement should be given at the moment of performing a good action, so that the cat develops an associative connection between good behavior and receiving the reward.

How to accustom a cat to hands and affection

If you want cat affection, become patient and affectionate yourself. An outdoor cat will begin to trust a person when it gets used to his smell and voice. He will associate his appearance with a pleasant event (food, affection).

A wild cat is tamed in the same way as a kitten. First, treats are brought regularly. Then they hold out their palm with a piece of the most delicious thing (the delicacy lies in the center of the palm, not on the fingers!), and allow it to be sniffed. When the cat begins to approach, perhaps rubs its head on its leg, you can pet it in response, speaking calmly and affectionately.

A common mistake: in order to tame a cat at home, he is immediately locked in a room - the animal will try to escape as soon as it is freed.

You can call the cat with you, after a few meters, stop, praise, and give a treat again. The main thing is that if you come, give her the opportunity to leave. Without feeling afraid, the pet will return.

Why is the cat not affectionate?

If a cat scratches and bites as an adult, the owners themselves are to blame. While still playing with her, they allowed her to “claw” in excitement. At first it's funny, then the adult:

  • bites legs;
  • does not allow himself to be combed;
  • spoils things, marks territory.

The simplest veterinary examination and medical procedures (injections, enemas) turn into a nightmare for the owner.

The independence and aggressiveness of a mustachioed cohabitant should not be shown towards family members. If the owners are afraid, the pet will become impudent. It is recommended to hold the cat in your arms more often and show affection. After taming, release it for further exploration of the area, praise and treat it with something tasty for good behavior.

Gradually the cat will understand: nothing bad is happening. If you do this regularly, at the same time talk affectionately, give a piece of “yummy” - after a while you can add short-term combing, examining the ears and other manipulations.

An irrepressible desire to “cuddle” can also be the reason why a cat becomes less affectionate. Small children will happily play with the kitty and pull its ear or tail.

Adults sometimes don’t lag behind (especially if the cat is not their property): they shamelessly shove pieces from the table, try to stroke them and pick them up against their will. It's not the cat that needs to be blamed, but the owner:

  1. If the cat is not the highlight of the program, it is better to isolate it in another room. Or warn the guest about correct behavior.
  2. For children, it is better to find other fun, otherwise the simplest scratch on the hand of an uncontrollable child will ruin the evening.
  3. When neither the person nor the cat is particularly anxious, let them interact as they wish.

Advice. It is advisable to wash your hands not only after interacting with an animal, but also before. Precautionary measures apply to small unvaccinated kittens.

Reasons that prompt a kitten to bite

The very first reason that should come to the owners’ minds is the baby’s fear. He found himself in an environment that was foreign to him, with strangers, etc., and his “bites” were a reaction to stress.

Aggression may also be due to the fact that the kitten is irritated by other pets living in the house, or it is simply hypersensitive to the touch of human hands, then this behavior is instinctive. In general, the most popular reasons why a kitten bites are described in our other article.

Another fairly common reason: the animal simply lacks movement. Also, do not forget that cats have a very delicate sense of smell, and they do not always react adequately to smells that are foreign to them.

If the kitten is 3-8 months old, then the cause may be changing teeth. A wounded or sick animal will also bite. How to stop a kitten from biting and throwing itself on arms and legs forever?

Redirecting behavior

Toys

A kitten may bite when it is very interested in playing. This is a signal that it’s time to buy toys for him. The most “correct” ones will be those that throw, drag on a string or “rod” (this is how the hunting instinct is satisfied).

It's good if they still rustle. Using interactive toys is also a plus for karma. You can build similar toys yourself using our instructions.

Advice:

You need to play with the kitten for so long that it gets very tired and is no longer able to bite.

Friend

A second kitten in the house is also a way to stop biting people, because in this way the cubs will play with each other, learn to balance strength, etc. However, before you get your pet a companion, weigh the pros and cons: living conditions, the character and gender of the “firstborn”, other nuances.

An important point in this case is that both kittens must be approximately the same age: it is not recommended to place the baby with an adult cat or a cat that has not yet given birth!

Punishment-reward

It is an indisputable fact that it is impossible to influence a cat, even a small one, with punishment, because it only makes her want to do the opposite.

However, punishment can be called actions that frighten the bully: for example, you can splash water on the animal, clap your hands loudly, hiss, rattle with a rattle (it can be made from a plastic bottle, filled with small coins), throw a bunch of keys on the floor, or you can lightly click on the nose or ears, blow into the nose.

Important!

But this must be done as soon as the kitten begins to bite. If he liked to bite the legs of household members, an effective way to wean the pussy from this would be to stick a plaster on the legs in those places that are more often exposed to bites, and smear it on top with ordinary mustard (naturally, in moderation). After a couple of attempts, the cub will understand that this is very unpleasant and will stop attacking.

By the way, if you punish a kitten with spanks, then only with some light object: for example, a rolled up newspaper or a rag. And always in the same way - this will develop a conditioned reflex, and the animal will stop biting when it sees the object in the hands of its owners.

Nail trimming

Whiskers usually bite and scratch at the same time, so trimming their claws is also an option. We have a wonderful article on our website about how to trim your claws at home.

However, you should resort to this method only as a last resort, because new claws will no longer grow, and from now on the animal will not be able to do without a person.

In addition, there is a high risk of infectious infections, so you can only entrust nail trimming to a professional.

Reference!

Interestingly, in the West such a procedure is banned today. A compromise could be a scratching post, which can be purchased at any pet store. In order for the kitten to start using it, you can rub the structure with catnip.

Extreme measures

Some owners, in cases where (in their opinion) other methods do not work, resort to measures that cannot be called otherwise. How extreme. It is clear that they can only be used in the most extreme cases. For example, you should not treat your hands and feet with products that are unpleasant for cats to smell: the owner should not cause negative emotions in the pet!

If, in general, it is not customary in the family to solve problems by talking in raised voices and shouting, then the little biter can be stopped by quietly squealing in his ear.

An even more severe method: as soon as the kitten begins to bite, they stick a finger deep into its throat or pull its tongue. Also no comments. A collar with a bell is probably also not a very good solution to the problem.

Is it possible to tame an adult cat to a new owner?

A cat tolerates a change of owner more easily than a dog. The exception is socially oriented breeds, for example, Oriental Siamese. They will gradually become affectionate with their new owners, but the first one is the only one for life.

The best way to train, even for a sexually mature individual, is not food, but play. First, an adult cat must get used to the territory. It is better to leave your pet to explore its new home on its own, and after a while offer some food from your hands. Just like a treat. At the same time, do not forget to talk measuredly, but not to stroke.

As soon as the cat gets used to it a little, you can:

  • lightly scratch a chair or furniture - so that the cat reacts to the sound near the owner;
  • roll a ball or ball of wool near you, inviting you to play;
  • “drive” a candy wrapper.

The cat quickly joins the game. After a while, you should again give a piece of food from your hand and praise it.

How to catch a wild kitten that is afraid of people

Although caring for a cat takes less effort than caring for a dog, adopting an outdoor cat is a big responsibility. It’s a pity for the little lump, scared and frozen, squeaking near the trash can or the entrance door. He will not scratch or bite if you put the kitten in your palm, stroke it, and mutter a few gentle soothing words. The warmth of human hands for a baby is a guarantee of food and safety.

Please note that we are talking only about feral and street cats, whose ancestors have always lived with humans. The real wild cats, which can only be tamed by Yuri Kuklachev and the Zapashny brothers, are:

  • Jungle Cat (House);
  • European forest cat;
  • Amur (Far Eastern) cat - inherits aggression towards humans and fear.

For an outdoor wild cat or kitten from the street, a visit to the veterinarian is mandatory, as it can be a carrier of viruses and infections that are dangerous to the health of humans or other animals in the house.

The newborn was probably thrown out by people: no hand was raised to drown or poison. Opening her eyes, the baby captured the person as a relative. Therefore, he does not experience aggression towards people. It’s easy to domesticate this one: it will get used to its new home and fall in love with its new owner in an evening.

Imprinting (instant early memory) of kittens that were born and lived in an attic or basement for a couple of months does not apply to humans. Stray cat cubs can remain feral for life.

The little “animals” run away, and when you try to pick them up, they bite. To catch a wild cat, use primitive traps:

  • large box;
  • baby bath;
  • a rabbit cage without a bottom;
  • regular carry...

They put food on the ground and cover it, for example, with a box.

Important. Consider the size of the animal. A heavy container falling on its back can injure the cat.

All that remains is to lift it and place one side on a support with a rope. As soon as the animal approaches the food, the stick is pulled out.

A more complex option: a cage with a lowered door (kotolovka). Triangular-shaped nets with a long handle and noose loops are also used.

To catch a domestic yard kitten, it is enough to regularly feed it by hand and talk to it. In a couple of days the baby will come running when called and allow himself to be petted.

When thinking about how to tame a cat, a person forgets: the cat chooses the owner. It was the cat who first began to meow, demanding food and attention, rubbing against her legs, showing affection. Once in the apartment, the animal adapts to the rhythm of the owner, giving him special, cat-like care.

How to tame a wild cat or kitten into your hands

When taming an animal, not only desire and perseverance are important, but also knowledge of small tricks that will help the pet quickly get used to its new owner. This process should take place in a calm environment, without sudden movements or loud sounds. To pick up a kitten, you need to act slowly and not hold the animal against its will. Gradually, the kitten will learn to trust and go to the owner himself. To tame an adult animal, a different approach is needed.

It is easier to tame a kitten from early childhood. The first need for communication arises in him already at two weeks of age. From this moment on, the owner should take the pet in his arms as often as possible so that he gets used to and learns to trust the person. This must be done carefully and the baby must be released at his first request. Under no circumstances should you hold a kitten, otherwise it can become a traumatic experience for him and will remain in his memory for a long time . It is very difficult to restore the animal's trust later.

Sometimes kittens do not want to sit in your arms for no apparent reason. In this case, the owner should be patient and remind himself that the animals are extremely curious, the world around them seems endlessly interesting to them. In addition, like human children, kittens are restless and get bored staying in one place for a long time.

It is worth making sure that the pet is comfortable being in human hands. By abruptly lifting or holding the kitten incorrectly, causing him discomfort, the owner can unknowingly scare away the baby.

First contacts

When you take a pet into your home, the first step is to carry out several important procedures. This is a visit to the vet and a wash. The specialist will check for discharge from the nose and eyes, examine the fur and skin, take tests, and determine the approximate age of the kitten. In addition, the doctor will give advice on vaccinations, care, feeding and treatment (if it turns out that it is necessary).

After visiting the veterinary clinic, the new resident must be washed off the accumulated street dirt. But this can only be done if there are no medical contraindications. For example, with some skin diseases, cats cannot be washed until they are completely cured.

Water treatments

For washing, it is better to use a special anti-parasite shampoo. The owner should be prepared for the fact that the kitten will react negatively to the process, will break free, and use its claws and teeth.

Before starting taming, the animal must be given time to come to its senses and calm down a little. Most likely, as soon as he is released, he will hide in the darkest and safest (in his opinion) corner. This could be a box, under a closet or under a bathtub. Let the baby sit there. There is no need to touch it or try to pull it out. There should be no bright light or loud sounds in the room.

From time to time you can come up and talk to the kitten. The words must be pronounced quietly, affectionately. You should not catch the animal’s gaze; if you look directly into its eyes, it will perceive it as a threat.

Perhaps after a while the kitten will come out of hiding and begin to slowly walk around the room, sniffing and looking around. If not, it's time to take action.

After sitting in the shelter for several hours, the animal will get hungry. This must be used to try to lure him out. Not far from the place where the kitten hid, bowls with food and water are placed. At first, it is better to choose soft and aromatic food.

Comments 1

If you bring your hand with spread fingers to a cat's face, it can behave very ambiguously, and often very aggressively.
But why are cats afraid of an outstretched hand? To begin with, cats perceive people as members of their pack, in other words, as big cats. If you observe when two cats sort things out with each other, you will notice that they rush forward at their opponent with their paws with their fingers outstretched. Sometimes, before a fight, cats take aggressive poses in order to demonstrate to their opponent their weapons in the form of claws and teeth.

To ensure that cats do not die in endless fights for territory, nature has put into them a unique mechanism, thanks to which they determine the strongest. This psychological attack reveals the winner even before the fight.

Therefore, when the owner spreads his fingers in front of his pet, the cat immediately perceives this as aggression. Her response will depend on who she thinks you are. If she is sure that you are the leader of the pack, then she will most likely run away, but if not, then she can safely enter into battle and even cause damage to you.

Taming methods

Time and hunger are the most faithful helpers on the path to taming a wild cat. First, the animal must be isolated by placing it in a cage or carrier. It is better to place the cage in a separate room or cover it with a rag, creating the illusion of loneliness for the animal and depriving it of all kinds of entertainment, even the opportunity to observe the situation. There should be no food or toys in the cage, only a bowl of water and a tray.

After your pet has been sitting in the cage for several hours, you need to go up and hand him a piece of tasty food in your palm. This could be some soft food or a small piece of chicken. If the kitten hisses, tries to hit with its paw, backs away, immediately remove your hand and walk away. Try again after a couple of hours. If the result is the same, leave the animal for a few more hours. Sooner or later, hunger will force the cat to come up and take the treat from your hand. Once this has happened, you can consider that half the job is done.

Now the main thing is patience and systematicity. It is necessary to approach the kitten more and more often with small pieces of food, each time giving it food from your hands. If he refuses, immediately leave, taking the treat with him. This way your pet will quickly get used to eating from your hands.

At the same time, you need to start raising your pet. With the cage door slightly open, place your hand close to him (without touching him). Ignore the hissing, but if he tries to attack, then lightly fight back. When the kitten stops objecting and calmly accepts the owner’s hand in close proximity to itself, reward it with a treat.

Frightening look

When the baby is already eating from his hands, it's time for the next step. Holding the food in your palm, you should try to pet the kitten before giving it the food. To his objections, the owner’s reaction is the same - to leave and take away the delicacy. After several approaches, the animal will understand that stroking is pleasant, safe and will accept it with pleasure.

How long will it take?

The timing of taming depends very much on the age of the animal, as well as on how long it has lived on the street and whether it has ever lived among people. A small kitten can make contact within a day. But an adult animal that has lived on the street for a long time can take a week or several months to get used to it. In addition, adult pets, even after a long stay at home, often retain fear of other people or the habit of hiding at the slightest noise. Sometimes it is not possible to get rid of these features, despite all the efforts of the owners.

How to accustom a kitten to being held?

The classic idea of a domestic cat is a warm furry ball curled up in your arms, purring in different tones. But some pets are too independent, not very affectionate and do not strive for intimacy with humans. And then the owner is faced with the question of how to accustom the cat to handling.

There are several methods to help overcome fear or reluctance to handle.

  • After a hearty meal, the pet is relaxed and sleepy. You can pick up a dozing kitten and gently cuddle it to keep it warm and cozy. After a short time, the baby will begin to climb up to the owner on his own.
  • Treats will help lure the kitten onto the person's lap. While he is eating, you need to gently stroke him and scratch him behind the ear. Gradually, the pet will understand that sitting in your arms is pleasant.
  • While playing, you need to pull the toy onto your lap from time to time. When the kitten jumps after you, you need to pet him. Over time, he will get used to close contact with a person and will strive for it himself.

Games bring people closer together

  • Perhaps the cat is simply afraid of heights due to the fact that he was picked up incorrectly. In order for the baby to feel comfortable, one hand is placed under his front paws, and the other is placed under his hind paws. You shouldn't hold the kitten up; it's better to lightly hold it close to you.

When using one method or another, you need to carefully monitor your pet, and the right path to training will definitely be found.

Cat in hands

The cat is one of the most difficult symbols that one has to deal with when deciphering dreams. The thing is that the image of a cat can appear in a dream for many reasons, and it is almost never possible to determine exactly how our subconscious worked at the moment when we saw a small kitten, a Siamese cat or an affectionate cat. Perhaps in reality we encountered an amazing person who, despite all the difficulties, managed to avoid a seemingly imminent danger. After all, looking at precisely such people, we remember the folk wisdom: “He falls on his feet like a cat.” The appearance of a cat in a dream can also be facilitated by meeting an independent, independent and slightly frivolous woman. And this is no coincidence, because in real life we call such a woman “a cat that walks on its own.” Or perhaps the image of a cat in a dream arose as a result of the fact that memories of how the cat washed itself were deposited in our subconscious: the folk sign “The cat washes its face for guests” is no secret to anyone. A cat can appear in a dream even when we are watching with pleasure how a young guy caresses and plays with a cat: after all, it’s rare that another folk wisdom does not come to mind at this moment: “He who loves cats will love his wife.” What if we dreamed of a cat, as a warning of impending danger (after all, during the day we were very worried when a black cat crossed our path)? As for those human qualities that characterize a cat, they are, without a doubt, known to everyone. This is cunning, deceit and malice. But at the same time, we must not forget that in ancient times cats were deified and considered special animals. This means that any dream in which you saw a cat is prophetic. The most important thing is to be able to decipher it correctly. Watching a cat wash itself in a dream means guests. It is possible that you will meet old good friends with whom you will have a great time. Watching a dog hunt a cat in a dream is a warning that you should under no circumstances deceive your friends. Having learned about your deception, your friends will turn away from you forever. Seeing in a dream a small kitten hiding in a tree from an angry dog is a sign that in real life you should be very careful. If you dreamed of a kitten who, having noticed a dog in the distance, immediately runs to hide on the roof, then you should beware of a danger that you have already managed to avoid once. If in a dream you saw a cat hunting for mice, then in the near future your life will be hectic and not entirely joyful. Various problems will arise on your way due to the deceit and evil machinations of your secret enemy. If a cat scratched you in a dream, then in reality big problems await you, about which you will be very worried. If you dreamed that a cat drove its claws right into your chest, then emotional anguish, sadness and sorrow await you. Watching a cat pretending to be dead and lying next to a mouse hole means that in the near future someone close to you will attempt to deceive you. Watching in a dream how a cat caught a mouse and carried it off to show its prey to other cats is a sign that in real life you are a very vain person. Perhaps such a dream indicates that there are vain people around you who will bring you great misfortune. If in a dream a black cat crossed your path, then in reality you should beware of dangers. Such a dream also suggests that you overestimate your strength, and therefore you should not refuse the help of friends. Seeing a cat with kittens in a dream means problems with children. Perhaps your child is deceiving you. Petting a cat sitting on your lap in a dream is a sign that in your environment there is a not entirely decent, frivolous woman who will greatly let you down by taking advantage of your trust. Watching a young guy or a single man stroking a cat in a dream means that when he gets married, he will love his wife very much. Feeding a cat in a dream is a sign that it’s time to stop “soaring in the clouds” and mind your own business. Watching several cats fighting in a dream is evidence that a streak of minor setbacks awaits you, so be patient and courageous. If in a dream an unfamiliar cat caresses you, it means that one of your new acquaintances has decided to take advantage of your kindness and trust. Be careful. Seeing a dead cat in a dream is a bad omen. Apparently, you will learn about the illness of someone close to you.

Why does the cat constantly rush at me, waiting around the corner? This question worries owners of cats and cats of all ages. This may also be due to strangers in the apartment, or more precisely, to their absence. The animal is constantly looking for an enemy who will need to point out that he is superfluous here.

If strangers practically never appear in the apartment, and there are no other animals in the house except the cat, then he begins to perceive his owner as a stranger. Experienced cat breeders advise combating this with a water pistol (a spray bottle of water) and hissing in the cat’s face.

Water will scare away the animal, and if after each prank you lift it by the scruff of the neck to the level of your face and hiss, then it will soon feel that its owner is in charge here. But don’t even think about yelling at the cat, much less hitting him, otherwise he will begin to take revenge on you.

Why does a cat lunge at your hand? The owner's hand was both a toy and a substitute for maternal warmth for the kitten. If you taught the animal from the first months of life that throwing yourself on your hand and biting it is fun, good and correct, then an adult cat will do the same.

It is very difficult to wean from this, the main thing is to protect yourself and your loved ones from the painful games of the cat. This can be done using a bottle of water and a lid with a small hole. With each attack on the hand, a stream of water must be directed to the cat’s face.

The aggressive behavior of a domestic cat cannot be ignored. Be sure to show your pet to the veterinarian, do not neglect his health.
