Certified pet food is the pet's main source of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It is important that it not only saturates, but also contains the daily intake of macro- and microelements, and also suits the individual characteristics of the pet, its breed and state of health. Therefore, every owner wants to be sure of the quality and safety of food for their dog. In this article you can find out where “1st choice” dog food is produced, what it contains, the pros and cons of the food line, and what you can replace it with. In addition, read the opinions of experts and ordinary consumers.

The history of the dog food manufacturer “1st choice”

This food was first marketed in 1990 thanks to PLB International in Canada.

Initially, a family from Quebec started a business producing and selling agricultural animal feed. Then they began to supply food for small domestic animals. Growing and expanding over the years, bringing in experts in the pet nutrition field, the family-owned business has become a leader in North America. The “1st choice” brand has become associated with premium cat and dog food.

In the international market, PLB International was also successful. In 2003, it received Canada's first food grade certification for dry pet food.

Now “1st choice” is the winner of many awards; the line of this brand is distributed in more than thirty countries around the world, including Russia. The representative of PLB International in our country is the Ivanko retail chain.

What is included in the food

Taking care of your animal's nutrition is a company priority. A team of professionals - veterinarians, as well as nutritionists and biologists have developed a special balanced nutritional formula, including an optimal set of vitamins, macro- and microelements. A distinctive feature of the “1st choice” dry food line is:

  • high content of natural meat as the main ingredient in each package;
  • a good variety of flavors for each category of food: from chicken to lamb;
  • the presence of minerals in each granule that helps normalize digestion. They provide healthy shiny coat and skin, allow you to control your pet’s weight;
  • the composition contains practically no by-products from meat and bone meal, as well as allergens such as wheat, corn or soy;
  • preservatives and flavorings made only from natural ingredients;
  • the special form of dry food granules helps clean plaque from teeth;
  • strengthening your pet's immune system.

Manufacturer information

1st Choice food is made by PLB International Inc in Canada. The manufacturer has been creating products for animals for more than three decades. During this time, he has established himself as a developer and manufacturer of excellent quality dog food. In addition to 1st Choice, the manufacturer produces Pronature food.

The quality of the product is checked at every stage of its release. The samples taken are tested in the company's laboratories, and recipes and manufacturing technologies continue to be improved. For production, only natural ingredients are used, which makes the food environmentally friendly.

The food is popular on the Russian market and is supplied through the official distributor Ivanko.

How much food should you give per day?

The balanced composition allows your pet to eat only food, excluding various types of additives. The optimal amount of food is calculated depending on the individual characteristics of your dog.

This includes age, height and weight (in kg), health status, chronic diseases. For example, the larger the dog, the larger its portion will be. An older pet requires careful attention to its nutritional system. The diet of a pet during illness or after surgery must be discussed with a veterinarian.

Average recommendations for the daily amount of dry food can be found on the back of the product packaging.

Full range of “1st choice”

The company offers several lines of dry food, divided by age.

Feed composition overview

Fest Choice food consists of natural products and excludes useless fillers that contain cheap low-quality feed (for example, corn, wheat).

The protein component is flour from meat, fish or poultry. It makes up up to 25% of the total composition. It doesn't seem like much. But you need to keep in mind that flour is a concentrate that contains 3 times more proteins than the meat itself. And also when grinding it, the meat is degreased and by-products are removed.

The carbohydrates (50-52%) here in 1st Choice are:

  • rice (broken or brown);
  • oat groats;
  • barley;
  • sweet potato.

This is a good set containing useful fibers that have a beneficial effect on the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. The nutritional value of the listed carbohydrates is average.

Of the fats (about 12-14%), the manufacturer included in the composition:

  • vegetable oil;
  • chicken fat;
  • flax-seed.

Each of them is a source of Omega and linoleic acid, important components for skin and coat.

Vegetable supplements Fest Choice includes:

  • beets;
  • carrot;
  • tomato pulp.

These products saturate the body with beneficial microelements and fiber, which are important for the digestion process. The content of beets is controversial among breeders. Some say that it is an inexpensive, useless product, while others point out that it is useful as a source of sugar and an ingredient that is good for intestinal function.

It also contains a long list of vitamins, phytocomponents and antioxidants.

Features of 1st Choice food

1st Choice brand products belong to the super-premium class. Initially it was produced only in the form of dry granules. But in February 2022, the assortment was diversified with canned food, and in May 2018, the line was supplemented with four more flavors. Both wet and dry foods are divided into categories for kittens, adult and senior cats. In addition, they produce products for sterilized and neutered pets, as well as for animals with problems with digestion, excess weight and the appearance of their coat. There are currently no treats in the 1st Choice line.

Canned food is suitable for both adult cats and the smallest furry cats who are just starting to try “adult” food.

The food has successfully passed laboratory tests and was found to be of high quality and safe for the life and health of cats. No bacteria or other harmful substances that could cause various diseases (including infectious ones) were found in it.

Each category of feed has its own characteristics, but we can also highlight the main components included in the product. For example, when making canned food, whole pieces of tuna and chicken fillet are used. Wet food also contains additives in the form of shrimp, berries and fruits. Papaya and pineapple help remove hairballs from the body, and Yucca reduces the odor coming from the animal's mouth and litter box.

One of the important ingredients of dry food is poultry. Chicken, duck, and chicken meal are the main sources of protein in 1st Choice. Typically the content of these substances in feed varies from 28 to 30%. This is enough for the normal growth and development of the pet, but the cat is not at risk of “protein overfeeding.” In addition, the feed contains chicken eggs, which contain important amino acids. The presence of flaxseed is also a definite plus. This component has a positive effect on the appearance of wool. In the composition you can see brown rice, fish oil and dried vegetables (for example, beets).

1st Choice contains a high amount of calcium, which is not good for cats prone to kidney failure.

In addition, 1st Choice foods contain:

  • vitamins B2, B3, B6, D, A, E;
  • phosphorus, potassium, zinc, magnesium, calcium and other trace elements;
  • amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids - arachidonic acid is not contained in sufficient quantities, so if you regularly use the food, consult your veterinarian to understand how to compensate for the lack of the necessary component.

During laboratory research, experts proved that only fresh raw materials were used to produce the food. In addition, the color of the granules matches the original raw material. This indicates that no dyes were used during the production of the food. No foreign impurities (metal and wood shavings) were also found.

When testing the product in the laboratory, it was proven that the actual amount of manganese, iron and calcium does not correspond to the data specified in the composition.

Three ingredients raise doubts:

  1. Cellulose - its benefits for cats are questionable.
  2. Tomato mixtures (only in some foods, for example, 1st Choice Adult Cat Chicken Formula) are also not very healthy for cats.
  3. Salt - its presence in food is more of a minus than a plus, although thanks to it, cats eating dry food are more thirsty and drink better, regularly replenishing the necessary supply of fluid in the body.

The granules have a round shape, convenient for chewing by adult animals and kittens

The disadvantage of the feed is the presence of trace amounts of chlorpropham in it. This pesticide gets into the feed with plant materials or is added intentionally as an insecticide. In any case, its presence in food is not welcome.

1st Choice brand food is distributed in supermarkets and veterinary departments only in large cities. In sparsely populated areas, finding it will be quite problematic. Therefore, it is easier to order food through online stores. This option can be even more profitable when purchasing food in large quantities. Approximate cost of products:

  • 0.35 kg - from 194 rubles;
  • 2.72 kg - from 1195 RUR;
  • 5.44 kg - from 2134 RUR;
  • canned food 85 g - from 95 rub.

At one time, my friends used 1st Choice Weight Control to feed their cat. She did not want to go outside and led a sedentary lifestyle. At the same time, she was completely healthy, she was just lazy, did not want to play or walk for a long time, and over time she gained weight. Not much, but the fat folds became noticeable. The veterinarian recommended Weight Control, which helped gradually rid the animal of excess weight. After this (about five months later) the cat was transferred to Adult Indoor Vitality.

Kitten food has a high calcium content due to the need for this microelement for growing animals. 1st Choice Kitten Healthy Start also contains more protein and fat than adult cat food.

Other types of 1st Choice food also have distinctive features:

  • Hypoallergenic - created for cats prone to allergies to various foods, the main components of this food are sweet potato (sweet potato) and duck, it also contains vegetable oil and dried alfalfa, there is no tomato pulp;

    Pedigree cats are most prone to allergies

  • Healthy Skin & Coat - recommended as a food that helps improve the appearance of the coat, its main components are fresh salmon and menhaden herring meal, and otherwise the composition is similar to the Adult Indoor Vitality food, but has a higher content of proteins, fats and calcium;
  • Sterilized - In addition to chicken meat and flour, the food contains sweet potato, rice protein, lentils and tapioca. Guaranteed analysis shows high protein content (33%) and low fat content (only 9%). Thanks to these compositional features, the risk of unwanted weight gain for animals is reduced;

1st Choice Finicky food for picky cats has a similar composition to Adult Indoor Vitality food, but on the manufacturer’s website it is credited with “an extremely special aroma and taste of each granule.”

Composition of 1st Choice canned food

Three different flavors have been created for kittens from 2 to 12 months:

  • Kitten Healthy Start is 45% chicken. Additional components are tuna oil and water generated during the processing of these products;
  • the other two types of canned food belong to the Healthy Skin & Coat line, that is, they are designed to improve the appearance of the animal’s fur and skin. "Premium Tuna" consists of 44.5% tuna. Premium Tuna with Chicken contains 31% tuna and 7% chicken. In both cases, the additional ingredients are yucca, sunflower oil and vegetable broth. Guaranteed analysis shows 10% protein and 1.5% fat.

The approximate cost of canned food for kittens (85 g) is 80 rubles

You can find canned food for cats over 10 years old. They only have one taste. The composition of canned food includes:

  • 40% chicken;
  • apples;
  • tuna oil;
  • fructooligosaccharides;
  • glucosamine;
  • chondroitin sulfate;
  • water that is formed during the processing of these products.

The protein content is 11%, and the fat content is 0.5%.

Canned food 1st Choice Mature or Less Active costs about 100 rubles

Canned food for adult cats has the largest range and amazes with the variety of additives used in preparation. For example, Adult Indoor Vitality canned food contains chicken (40%), apples and shredded cellulose, while products for sterilized cats contain chicken (45%), sardines (5%), sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate (E341), tuna and water. All other canned food for adult cats belong to the Healthy Skin & Coat line and have the following varieties:

  • tuna (45.5%), tilapia (4%), pineapple (4%);
  • tuna (45.5%), pineapple (5%);

Advantages and disadvantages of 1st Choice compared to other brands

1st Choice, like any other product, has its pros and cons. To better understand its advantages and disadvantages, you can compare it with other well-known cat foods:

  • Royal Canin is a popular premium brand. This food is more common in supermarkets and pet stores. The approximate cost is 1057 rubles per two kilograms. That is, its price is slightly lower than that of 1st Choice brand products. But the composition of Royal Canin does not justify such savings. This food is based on grains, including corn, which can cause allergies in cats.
  • Food from Germany Leonardo also belongs to the super-premium class. It is sold in large packages, which makes it convenient not only for use at home, but also in nurseries. A 7.5 kg package costs about three thousand rubles, which is more profitable than purchasing 1st Choice. The largest package of 1st Choice weighs 5.44 kg and costs a little more than two thousand rubles. But Leonardo food is even less common than 1st Choice. Therefore, often ordering online is the only possible option. The products of these brands have a similar composition: both foods are based on poultry meat, and cereals are contained in small quantities.
  • Science Plan is more affordable than 1st Choice as it is sold in many supermarkets and pet stores. Its cost is about a thousand rubles per two kilograms, i.e. the prices of feed are approximately equal. Canned food of this brand is cheaper - 65 rubles per 85 grams. But the composition of Science Plan is not so good. The food contains corn, which can cause allergies. Together with wheat, they are fairly cheap fillers that the cat does not need in large quantities.

I use natural products to feed my cats (meat, vegetables, offal, etc.), but before that I tried to find suitable ready-made food for them. 1st Choice was also tested. The cats ate it, but without much enthusiasm compared to Whiskas brand products. But I don't consider this a disadvantage. Quite the contrary. The absence of chemical dyes and flavors prevented cats from “going crazy” from the mere smell of food.

When using dry food, it is important to provide your pet with plenty of fresh water, while a cat eating canned food requires less water.

Advantages and disadvantages of food

The Fest Choice brand has a number of advantages:

  • good composition. Focusing on maintaining the health of pets, natural ingredients predominate in the developed formula. These are meat and plant matter. In addition, each granule contains a sufficient amount of micro- and trace elements that meet the daily intake;
  • You can’t do without preservatives in dry food. “1st choice” uses natural preservatives - tocopherols (vitamin E);
  • sufficient range of products. A variety of specialized foods will help you make the right choice in accordance with the characteristics of your dog;
  • optimal price. The price corresponds to the quality of the product. At the same time, every dog owner can afford such dry food.

However, along with this, there are some disadvantages to this product:

  • a significant amount of plant components in the composition. They make up about a third of all substances;
  • presence of by-products. There are very few of them, but they are still present;
  • The taste set is quite monotonous. Basically it's chicken. Hypoallergenic formulations contain lamb and fish;
  • Buying food of this brand will not be difficult on specialized sites. But finding it in retail stores may not be easy. It is often put on the counter in special pet stores, but more often you have to place an order.

Cost of cat food "Fest Choice"

Dry food "Fest Choice" has several types of packaging of different weights, taking this into account, the cost of the product is as follows:

  • three hundred and fifty grams - from one hundred and eighty rubles;
  • nine hundred grams - from four hundred and fifty rubles;
  • two kilograms seven hundred twenty grams - from one thousand two hundred rubles;
  • five kilograms four hundred and forty grams - from two thousand fifty-eight rubles.

A jar of wet food costs ninety rubles.

Table: advantages and disadvantages of Fest Choice food

Pros.Minuses.
The composition uses fresh poultry and seafood.The product is poorly presented in retail.
The ingredients do not include pork, soy, wheat or corn, which are poorly digestible by animals.Low animal protein content and high fat content.
All components are of natural origin.
The food contains many vitamins and biological additives, the use of which is aimed at maintaining the good physical condition of pets.
Large range of feeds.
For its class of feed, the cost of production is acceptable.

"Fest Choice" does not contain components that are addictive in animals. And if for some reason you want to change it, you can try food from other super premium brands, for example:

  1. Arden Grange food, produced in Great Britain - the general analysis of the product is approximately the same, there is grain-free food based on white fish and potatoes, many natural additives, but the price is higher.
  2. Blitz food (Russia) - the animal protein content in the food is higher (chicken and turkey - twenty-seven percent), but corn is present; preservatives and antioxidants of natural origin, many other additives, including Yucca Schidigera; the cost of production is significantly lower.

Reviews from leading veterinarians

The overwhelming majority of specialized veterinarians speak positively about this brand of dry food. On thematic forums you can find the following statements:

Anastasia S.:

In my practice, there were cases when this food was not entirely suitable for the pet. There were eating disorders. But there are very few of them. In general, the composition of Fest Choice is good. You can try introducing it a little at a time with your usual food, increasing the volume and adjusting the proportions. And then watch the reaction.

Natalia T:

Good food, I like the composition. I often recommend it to my patients. It is, of course, not medicinal. It's very suitable for regular feeding.

Reviews from veterinarians and buyers about the food

Dog owners and veterinarians often share their opinions about the pet foods they use.

Owner reviews:

  • Marina, owner of two Labradors:

“I used to feed the dogs natural food, but after a while one of them developed allergies and problems with their fur. After trying a bunch of different foods, I accidentally came across Fest Choice. Both dogs liked it. With it, digestive problems disappeared, the coat was restored. Sometimes my picky eaters refuse to eat it, in which case we switch to another flavor of the same brand. Another plus I would like to note is the absence of a nasty smell in the food.”

  • Mila, Pekingese owner:

“In general, I like the food both in price and composition. But it didn’t suit us. We bought food with chicken, the dog ate it with pleasure, but after a few days redness and scabs appeared. Therefore, if your pet does not tolerate chicken, this food is not for you! I liked the small granules and lack of crumbs in the bag. The food has no distinct odor.”

Reviews from veterinarians about 1st Choice food:

  • Denis, veterinarian, 7 years of experience:

“During my work, I have repeatedly recommended switching to Fest Choice to my patients. I like it for the amount of meat, vegetables and richness of microelements. An interesting feature is that the food contains products for fresh dog breath. The granules are successfully selected for different breeds and ages of animals. The food is nutritious, I recommend it as a balanced diet for your pet.”

Alexandra S:

I have a Yorkie, my name is Lola. From a young age she constantly had stomach problems. Well, regular cheap food definitely wasn’t suitable. Immediately something happened. Therefore, I carefully selected food for the baby. I decided to try Fest Choice and introduced it gradually. Everything went smoothly. Moreover, she constantly turned her nose up at other mass market brands. I even checked the naturalness of yoghurts with her. If she eats, then everything is fine)) And then Fest Choice began to eat well. And now only on it. So far there haven't been any serious problems.

Olga T.:

The store didn't have our food, I think I'll take this one and try it. Well, to be honest, I didn’t notice much of a difference. Although many people praise 1st choice. Jason seems to eat it the same way, although he doesn’t care what he eats, in my opinion. The packaging is beautiful, it smells nice, but I don’t think I’ll buy it regularly. More likely as a backup option.

Irina F.:

Initially, this food attracted me for some reason when I was choosing food for my puppy. Fest Choice came right away. I take it for miniature dogs. There are small light brown granules, they are just the right size for small breeds. Everything in the composition is beautifully written, but I even tried it myself once. I didn’t feel anything bad about the taste; it wasn’t a very greasy crisp, almost tasteless. I didn't get poisoned)

Reviews from veterinarians

Julia writes on one of the veterinary forums in response to a question about this food:

This is a super premium food, quite good. There are no dyes or harmful additives in the composition, if you want, try it. Some of our clinic's clients feed their dogs and cats this food; most do not have any nutrition-related problems.

My Tosha ate natural food for a long time, but lately I haven’t had time to devote enough time to his diet; from a slender cat, he gradually turned into a bun. I decided to try switching to dry food, and as a result of searching, the choice fell on 1st Choice Sterilized. This is food for sterilized cats and female cats, they usually have problems with excess weight, I hoped that it would help with this.

There were no problems with the translation; Tosha liked the dry food. And so did I, I tried the granules after opening the bag - not salty, not greasy, with a pleasant smell. You can probably eat chiplos instead, they are definitely more healthy)) After two months of feeding, the problem with excess weight did not disappear, but it decreased significantly, it is no longer such a bun. I think it will take the same amount of time and the weight will return to normal.

Hi all! Today I’ll tell you about the 1st Choice Kitten Growth Formula kitten food that we feed our Maine Coon kitten. He is now 9 months old and has been eating this food since he was 3 months old. The breeder ate Pro Plan, but I wanted something better (before that I had read a bunch of forums and already knew that he was premium and not the best).

1st Choice food is made in Canada. The packaging is in pleasant white and lilac colors; instead of the usual zip locks, it has Velcro. The main advantage of the food is, of course, its composition, which is very good for feeding small cats. There are feeding guidelines on the packaging, but I usually pour it in at random so I can eat it.

The food granules are light brown, small, round, slightly flattened. The smell is pleasant. The small size of the granules was a plus at first, but now the kitten has already grown a lot and they fall out of the mouth, but soon we need to switch to food for adult cats.

During the entire feeding period there were no problems; the food was perfect. To summarize, I would like to say that I was satisfied with the choice; thanks to 1st Choice Kitten food, our baby is growing healthy and strong! Definitely recommend it to your cats and cats!

My cat usually eats Royal Canin, but when the store didn’t have the usual formula, I thought why not try food from another manufacturer. I took 1st Choice Adult Finicky for picky cats, with chicken flavor. It is a little more expensive, but I decided not to spare the money.

Unfortunately, the cat did not appreciate my initiative, sniffed at the new product and began to reluctantly eat, scattering crumbs around the bowl. The composition seems to be better, the packaging is no less beautiful, the smell is also not very different, but for some reason it tastes worse than Royal Canin. I don’t know what’s causing this, but I won’t buy 1st Choice in the future.

Briefly about the main thing

  1. 1st choice dry dog food belongs to the Canadian company PLB International.
  2. A distinctive feature of this food is its completely natural composition of meat and plant ingredients. Flavorings and preservatives are also natural substances.
  3. Fest Choice products are divided into groups depending on the age of the dog (newborns, adults and seniors). In addition, you can choose food depending on the breed of your pet, its size, such distinctive features as food or skin sensitivity, allergies, and the need to monitor weight.
  4. Limited tastes are perfectly compensated by the presence of natural nutrients, vitamins, micro- and microelements in the composition of dry food.
  5. Unfortunately, there are no analogues of this product in our country. However, it is difficult to find it in stock on store shelves. However, it is very easy to place an order on the website on the Internet.
  6. But in any case, always follow your veterinarian's recommendations. Don't experiment with your pet's diet. The main thing is his health, not the brand.
