Manufacturer information

Baldassard Monge is the founder of the Italian company Monge & CSpa , which produces balanced pet food. The year of foundation is considered to be 1963, in the same year the company began to receive its first orders from large nurseries in Italy. Recognition was not long in coming, and the breeders recognized that Mogne food was of the highest level.

Until 2022, Baldassard Monge's company is one of the largest feed manufacturers in the world. The plant is located in Monasterolo di Savigliano, in Italy, in an area that is considered a standard of environmental purity. As befits large factories, Monge meets all EU requirements and standards and is equipped with the latest specialized equipment.

The production process deserves special attention. Monge is meticulous in everything from the choice of raw materials to the design and practicality of packaging. In 2013, the company opened its first advanced plant for the production of dry and wet pet food.

A special technology for preparation was developed - the highest quality raw materials were converted into microscopically small particles by grinding.

The body of domestic animals is different from that of humans, the process of assimilation of food takes longer and, no matter how strange it may sound, animals are more capricious than us. Our stomach can digest almost anything.

According to experts, this makes the feed homogeneous and digestible. Before feed, the Monge family was breeding chickens to supply to elite restaurants, so there were no problems with raw materials. By the way, the raw material is poultry meat that was raised on the farm.

Hormones or antibiotics are never used to increase size, only natural food, which is undoubtedly a plus.

The range of dog food is simply amazing . Monge offers several lines. You can choose for yourself based on the breed, age and characteristics of your pet. The company's feed is divided into 3 types:

Functional line

Functional line
The line includes the following foods:

  • For removing fur.
  • For cats living indoors.
  • For sterilized cats.
  • For the prevention of urolithiasis.
  • For cats with sensitive digestion.

The first two are no different in composition from the previous line, they have the same advantages and disadvantages, I will not dwell on them.

In food for sterilized pets, wheat comes in second place, followed by corn gluten meal and oats. It is not entirely clear why a sterile cat needs so many grains, especially considering that plant foods alkalize the urine.

Food for the prevention of urolithiasis was generally disappointing. Rice comes first, followed by corn gluten meal, and oats in sixth place. Chicken is even less - 18% dehydrated and 5% fresh.

It is strange that in this food, calcium and phosphorus are added equally (0.80%), although it is known that there should always be a little more calcium. I would like to ask the manufacturer: what exactly is prevention, given that the food consists of 80% grain?

The food for sensitive digestion was also not impressive. In the first place is corn, in third is corn gluten, and between them is squeezed chicken meat, of which at least 10% is fresh. The percentage of chicken meat in the feed is not known. Next comes chicken oil - regular chicken fat, but it is unknown what preservative was used. In tenth place in the composition is a dry whole egg, and in 11th and 12th place are flour and salmon oil.

Another carbohydrate component is brown rice. Soybean husks, insoluble pea fibers, and beet pulp were added as sources of fiber.

It has a very carbohydrate composition, and its healing effect on the animal’s sensitive digestive system is questionable.

Guaranteed Analysis

  • Protein: 27% (food for sensitive digestion) – 35% (food for sterilized animals).
  • Fats: 10% – 16%.
  • Fiber: 2.5% – 7% (food for sterilized animals, apparently so that castrati eat less and poop more, why else do you need so much fiber?).
  • Ash: 5% – 7%.

The calcium-phosphorus ratio, with the exception of Urinary Cat food (for the prevention of urolithiasis), is normal.

Bottom line

This line is much worse in quality than the previous one, there are a lot of carbohydrate components in the feed, and there are questions about the therapeutic and prophylactic effect. We do not recommend!

Monge feed composition

Here's how Monge food differs from the rest. Superficial overview of the composition:

  • Meat is the most important and basic ingredient. The main source of protein. Adding to the taste appeal is the fact that the meat is not frozen and only fresh meat is used that has passed several stages of testing.
  • X.O.S. _ _ _ – stabilize intestinal microflora, strengthen the immune system, prevent gas formation.
  • Artichoke extract, echinacea, oregano, garlic are hepatoprotectors. Biologically active substances, antioxidants and vitamins contained in feed stimulate digestion, metabolism, liver and pancreatic function. In general, they strengthen the body.
  • Chondroitin , glucosamine, phosphorus - strengthen joints and the skeletal system.
  • L-kartinin – weight control and muscle building of the dog.
  • Omega-3, Omega-6 – give shine to the coat and a healthy appearance to the skin.

Dietary meat, which is easily digestible, ensures good digestion of food and absorption of the beneficial properties of food. Hypoallergenic protein sources – help with negative reactions to food.

Feed composition can be divided into two categories:

  • To satisfy hunger;
  • To obtain nutrients and nutrients.

The picture shows that the first and main component is meat. I am very pleased that even the % (27%) of the content in the package is indicated. Roughly speaking, 1/5 of the pack is meat. Moreover, it is fresh and of high quality, as the manufacturer himself assures. Further, rice and corn (also 27%) are added for mass, but despite this, they provide a noticeable increase in energy, which cannot be a minus.

The rest of the ingredients can be classified as “getting nutrients.” These include: Vitamin C, vitamin E, L-cartinine, mineral salts, protein (30%), fat (18%), crude ash (7%), cheese fiber (2%), calcium (1.5%) and phosphorus (1.2%)

Daily line

Daily line
There are only three options within the line - for kittens, for adult cats and for seniors.

Meat

Meat ingredients are at the top of the list, which makes us happy. But the manufacturer designated them as “chicken”, and explained in parentheses that the concept includes 26% (and 22% in food for the elderly) dehydrated chicken and 10% fresh. However, the ingredient does not contain the word “meat”. We conclude that the chicken in the feed is whole, with bones, skin and everything else.

In addition, this example well illustrates the cunning of marketers, because if the ingredients were indicated separately, then fresh chicken would be much lower in the composition, but they make up 36% - tricky!

Next in the food, in fourth place, is hydrolyzed animal protein. It is well absorbed and improves the taste and aroma of the feed, but it is obtained through chemical processing from unknown raw materials - it can be classified as low-quality ingredients.

Next to it is powdered egg with a high content of animal protein. Here the Russian translators were a little modest, since in English the name of the component sounds like whole egg powder - powder from a whole egg, which means it really contains the same nutrients as a raw egg.

And the last meat ingredient is fish. The manufacturer explained in parentheses that this is dehydrated salmon. It’s a little unclear why not write this right away. The salmon listed whole means it was dried and ground whole.

Fats

The fat content is listed as "animal fat" (99.6% chicken fat preserved with natural antioxidants). The immediate question is: where did the 0.4% go? Is it some other fat, or is this amount taken up by natural antioxidants? A little unclear, but overall a trustworthy ingredient. Another source of fat is fish oil, represented by salmon oil.

Plant component

The second place in the composition is occupied by rice. If you think about it and divide the chicken from first place into its components - who knows, maybe rice would come first. In any case, it is obvious that rice is one of the main components, and its share is very large, which is not good, because the predator clearly does not need such an amount of grain.

Moreover, the food contains corn in two components: corn gluten meal and simply plain corn. In the first case, it is waste from plant production, which has a bad effect on cats’ digestion and is a potential allergen. Well, again, one component is divided into two in order to artificially raise the meat component in composition closer to the top of the list.

The food is rich in fiber. Its sources are dry beet pulp and insoluble pea fibers. The ingredients are not dangerous, they serve as ballast and fill the intestines, creating a feeling of fullness. Perhaps this is actually a good idea for low-active cats.

Supplements

Prebiotics are added to the feed in the form of two types of yeast - brewer's and dehydrogenated, as well as isolated prebiotics - xylooligosaccharides. In addition, there is Yucca Schidigera, rose hips, and a pineapple stem was also added to the food for the elderly.

A natural mixture of tocopherols and rosemary extract are indicated as technological additives, which means that no chemical preservatives were used. A definite plus.

Guaranteed Analysis

  • Protein: 28% (food for the elderly) – 34% (food for kittens and pregnant women).
  • Fats: 20% – 14%.
  • Fiber: 2.5% - 4% (feed for the elderly).
  • Ash: 6.5%.

The calcium-phosphorus ratio is normal, and there is also a detailed list of vitamins and microelements.

Bottom line

Pros of food:

  • Quality fats.
  • Some good quality protein ingredients, natural preservatives.
  • Guaranteed analysis is normal.

Cons of food:

  • There is no meat as such, the whole chicken is listed.
  • Lots of marketing, meat ingredients listed to be higher on the list.
  • Lots of carbohydrate components and vegetable protein.
  • The addition of taurine, indicated in the composition and not in the list of microelements, indicates that the food does not contain enough high-quality meat components.

In general, the food is perhaps better than the much-hyped premiums, but it is recommended to give preference to food with a more transparent composition.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any product, Mogne has its pros and cons. Let's talk about this in more detail so that the consumer can weigh all the pros and cons.

Advantages

The list is, of course, longer than the list of shortcomings, but not by much:

  1. High quality of the products themselves;
  2. Natural and fresh meat (not artificially obtained) in optimal quantities;
  3. No low-quality additives that can negatively affect the animal’s body;
  4. Rich ingredient. The ingredient list is truly amazing;
  5. Average price that can compete with other feeds;

Flaws

Please note that the disadvantages did not include their quality as food.

  • The need to order in the official store via the Internet, since it is not available everywhere;
  • Too much division into categories. The right type of food may simply not be available.

If you are switching to a new food and don’t know how your dog will react, don’t buy in bags. Take a few different packs to try. The dog himself will tell you which one he likes best.

Perfect Fit Sterile: general characteristics

In our top is the company that produces the famous Whiskas. But today we will talk about Perfect Fit food for sterilized cats. Reviews are often positive, especially highlighting the availability of products. Production is located both in Germany and in Russia. Wet and dry food are produced, which will be discussed. Before we look at what users and veterinarians say, let’s pay attention to the composition. Unlike Brit products, meat is completely replaced with chicken flour (20%). To ensure that the proteins are present in full, soy concentrate is used. It also contains flour of animal origin, which is not specified by the manufacturer. Users note that pets using this food are active, but not everyone is happy to eat the offered dish.

Reviews from veterinarians and buyers about the food:

  • Review of Monge dog food, from a veterinarian from the Bagheera clinic :

“Owners often come to us with various complaints, including about food. Basically, their pets reject food for unknown reasons. Based on the breed and characteristics of the dog, we suggest trying Monge food. Usually, they take several packs, and after a while, after the dog’s preferences have become clear, they take them in bags. We are very pleased with the products, I’m glad that there is a large assortment.”

  • Review of Medium adult food from Pavel :

“I have a German Shepherd. I began to notice that the dog was “fading away” before our eyes. It became scary. I thought it seemed like it, but friends and acquaintances began to say the same thing. We tried different foods, fed him only fresh meat for a while, but it didn’t help. The veterinary clinic recommended Mogne food to us. They assured me that it contains a lot of useful substances and that after a while everything will return to normal. As I looked into the water, the dog really had a lack of nutrients, and I stuffed him with all sorts of rubbish for lunch, breakfast and dinner.”

  • Review of Medium Senior food from Elizabeth :

“My dog is many years old, old. He doesn’t eat regular food, and even if he does eat, he suffers for a long time. A friend suggested that older dogs should have their own diet. This was news to me. I bought Medium Senior and was surprised. The dog first sniffed, then began to eat. The next day, her appetite returned to normal and she devoured bowl after bowl. I even had to hide the food more securely. The prices are also good. Not very cheap, but not expensive either. I mainly order from online stores, since there is none in our city.”

Customer reviews from the forum:

Grain Free Veterinary diets

Medicinal food Grain Free Veterinary diets
In general, any veterinary food raises doubts about its composition, it just so happens. However, Monge dietary food pleasantly surprised us; it is much better in quality than the popular veterinary lines Royal Canin, Hills, ProPlan and so on, since it does not contain cheap grain crops! The assortment includes the following foods:

  • Urinary Oxalate (for the treatment of oxalate-type urolithiasis).
  • Urinary Struvite (for the treatment of struvite-type urolithiasis).
  • Dermatosis (for cats with skin diseases).
  • Obesity (for weight loss).
  • Gastrointestinal (for gastroenterological pathologies).
  • Renal (diet for kidney failure).
  • Hepatic (diet for liver diseases).
  • Diabetic (diet for cats with diabetes).

Since I am not a veterinarian, I do not want to go into details regarding the composition. After all, the food is still dietary; it contains easily digestible hydrolyzed proteins (hydrolyzed salmon protein) or freeze-dried meat products (freeze-dried chicken, pork, duck).

The food contains quite a lot of carbohydrate components and sources of fiber, but also quite high-quality fats (chicken fat, duck fat, salmon oil). Of course, you should not simply feed such food - only as prescribed by a veterinarian. We cannot evaluate it as a regular complete food, but we were pleased with the fact that the food does not contain grains or gluten.

BWILD Feed the Instinct

BWILD Feed the Instinct is a new feed sourced from Monge. All recipes correspond to the best nutrition for an animal that has almost completely adapted to life at home, but, in fact, remains a predator.

BWILD products are almost grain-free and filled with the best of meats, which are delivered fresh and specially selected for this range.

This product line contains 2/3 of easily digestible meat, natural fibers, herbs and fruits, vitamins, and oats.

Royal Canin: general characteristics

One of the leaders in the market, the company was founded in 1967 (France). Today it is a transnational company whose production is located in 9 countries, including Russia. The company is famous for its developments for special and weakened animals: with long hair, elderly, hyperactive, etc. Sterilized animals are also special, which is why the company is represented in the top today. In addition, the company provides training to veterinarians who are well versed in the composition of Royal Canin food.

The line clearly differentiates food for sterilized cats. Reviews from veterinarians point out that you need to track the age of your pet on the packaging. The composition of the product differs for animals under 7 years old and older than 10. Three icons should be noted indicating the features of the food. The company guarantees: optimal weight (due to high protein levels), urine dilution (due to a decrease in the amount of minerals), S/O Index, that is, the creation of an environment that is unfavorable for the formation of oxalates and struvite crystals.

Product cost

The high-quality composition of Monge and the positioning of the entire range as super-premium determines the high market value of any packaging of dog food. But one pack, in accordance with the feeding table, is enough for a long time, because the standard dosage of Italian food is small. And diet is not the best way to save money. The health and longevity of your four-legged friend directly depends on it, so choosing expensive products is completely justified. Especially if you are going to give it to a puppy, elderly or nursing dog.

Hepatic and other medicinal mixtures cost from 722 rubles per kilogram. Sometimes Hepatik, Renal and other medicinal mixtures can be purchased at a lower price. But for this you need to make a wholesale purchase. Prices for canned food in small packages start from 75 rubles per 100 grams. On average, the cost of a pack is calculated using the formula 150 rubles per 100 grams of food. Dry food is measured not in grams, but in kilograms. So, for three kilograms of dry food for adult Special dog dogs you will have to pay from 1032 rubles.

Description

“Monge” is an Italian super premium food for dogs and cats, with which in 1963 the history of the development of not only this brand, but diets for pets in the country as a whole began. Today it is a well-known European brand of high quality food.

In 2013, Monge was recognized as the leader in the production of dry animal feed in Italy.

The use of the latest technologies in meat processing allows the manufacturer to provide the required amount of animal protein in this food, as well as an attractive taste. No flavorings, coloring substances or preservatives are used in production.

The range of feeds offers a choice of mono-protein, gluten-free diets, as well as dietary food that is specially designed for animals in need. The manufacturer guarantees the quality of ingredients produced in the European Union.

What common?

Both Monge and Royal Canin make quality pet products with a high percentage of animal protein . Both European companies follow international quality standards , so you can be confident when offering it to your pet. A wide range allows you to choose the best option in each specific case, depending on the age, size, and health status of the animal. You can pamper your pet with wet pates in various flavors that do not contain preservatives or artificial additives.

The dietary lines of both brands offer therapeutic and preventive nutrition for a wide range of diseases. Both companies classify cats 7 years and older as seniors , which is considered incorrect among breeders since the average lifespan of a cat is significantly longer than a dog.

What about canned food?

When processing applications from users, we strive not for quantity, but for quality. In 2017, descriptions and ratings of canned food from more than 40 different brands appeared on the website. On the one hand, this is a lot, but on the other hand, we have not yet studied enough types of canned food from each brand for comprehensive statistics.

Therefore, for now we have limited ourselves to statistics on dry food only. In 2018, we will pay close attention to canned food and promise to prepare a separate report on them about the leaders and outsiders in the future.
