It is worth accustoming your pet to walks from a young age, but not earlier than five months. For example, taking him out slowly on hot summer days to save the pet from overheating. When did you start walking your cat?

My husband and I have wanted to have a pet for a long time. At first we thought about a dog, but since we study and work, there would be no time left for such a pet. Then they decided to get a cat - a more independent animal.

My husband jokingly suggested getting a “cat with a dog’s character.” And this joke went on so long that we actually adopted a Maine Coon - a wild domesticated cat, which already, at seven months old, can be compared in size to an average dog.

We decided that the wild cat needed wild nature, so we started taking her outside from the first months. At first, Alpha (that’s the cat’s name) was very afraid of street noises: she pressed herself to the ground and crawled to a secluded place. We are still teaching her to take such walks.

Why are you walking your cat in the city?

We live in St. Petersburg, that’s why we walk with her here.

Because of the always bad weather, Alpha and I don’t go for walks much. I don’t want to take her outside where there is slush, rain, frost and wind. We walk mostly in warm weather. It’s also possible to go out in winter, since Maine Coons are adapted to the cold, but she doesn’t particularly like the snow.

Now we are vacationing in Crimea. When they brought Alpha to the sea, she didn’t really like it either. According to the veterinarian and our observations, she is absolutely comfortable walking only in the forest.

How do passers-by and other animals react to a cat with a leash?

When we decided to walk Alpha on the street, we told our relatives and friends about it. Everyone reacted to this absolutely normally, because they understood: the cat is big and needs to move a lot. They knew that we consulted the veterinarian on everything.

The owner must monitor the behavior of his pet. In particular, he must not use, for example, a fighting dog as a means of threats or blackmail. If the same animal attacks, the owner will be held accountable by law.
An animal’s behavior is an indicator of its owner’s care for it. Thus, the dog should not move around the territory of a sports or playground without a muzzle, or travel with the owner on public transport.
A pet should not relieve itself at bus stops, on school premises, in hospitals, etc. If this does happen, the owner must immediately clean up after the pet.
If signs of aggressive behavior or danger to neighbors and passers-by are detected, the owner is obliged to isolate the animal from other people by contacting a veterinary clinic. There have been cases when animals infected with rabies were burned, but similar types of cases should also be dealt with by the appropriate service.

It is also not permitted to breed or purchase fighting dogs to participate in dog fighting.
Animals should not be left unattended in a closed room or car for more than an hour.

An apartment (own or temporary) should be used only for human habitation, and not for arranging or maintaining a nursery or holding point, or animal shelter. Otherwise, the owner of the apartment must part with the animals or move out of the given living space. The same requirements apply to communal apartments, dormitories and the private sector. Inappropriate use of any residential space goes against the Housing Code of the Russian Federation and sanitary standards.

In case of malicious, periodic violation of the norms, the owner or guardian of pets is held administratively liable.

Cats living in rural conditions from early childhood get used to taking walks only in the summer and on a free basis, remembering the path to the house. Living in an urban environment, it is more difficult for a cat to get used to the street environment, so the animal’s chance of getting lost is quite high.

In order for the pet to be able to walk outside without health consequences, the breeders came up with a special complex of several parts that is tied around the pet’s chest and front legs - a harness. Unlike a collar, from which any dexterous cat can get out in a matter of seconds, a harness sits securely on the pet’s body due to several attachment points. And even the most resourceful animal will not be able to get out of these “shackles.”

The harness, like the collar, is attached to the leash using a movable carabiner. This allows the pet to roam freely on the street, and the owner not to be afraid that his pet will slip away into the nearest basement.

Types of harnesses

The essence of cat leashes is to attach the leash to straps that go around the cat's body, which allows you to do without a collar.

They differ in mounting methods:

Eights. They consist of a pair of loops that are attached to the neck and front legs;
Vests (jackets). Simple clothes with a leash. Used more often in cool weather. They are made from various materials and decorated in different ways.
H-shaped. Similar to the figure eight, only the loops on the back are connected using a cross bar.
V-shaped. The loop in the pet’s chest area looks like the letter “V”, but there are no fundamental differences.

Difficulties of walking

How to walk with a cat

All cats experience negative experiences on their first walks. This is fine. If you sat inside four walls all your life and didn’t know that there was a world around you, you would be scared too. In addition, cats have a heightened sense of hearing and smell, and therefore new sounds and smells of the street seem stronger to them than to us, which is also frightening and stressful at first. But over time, everything changes - and the cat, who hated the street, suddenly begins to love it, because he understands: it’s interesting, it smells nice, it gives new vivid impressions.

With the right approach, which starts with taking the cat in a carrier or in a special space backpack out into the yard for 5 minutes, almost any animal can be taught to love walks. To do this you will need from 1 to 10 outputs. But there always remains a small percentage of those who are against it, even despite regular appearances. It’s probably better to leave them at home and not force them: if the animal experiences negative stress every time during a walk, this will not bring anything good - then let it breathe the air while sitting on the windowsill.

What dangers can a cat face on the street?

Due to some of the dangers that pets can be exposed to when walking outside, some veterinarians are protesting against walking cats within city limits.

First of all, these are manifestations of stressful situations that can arise during a walk, as well as panic from the cat getting into an unfamiliar place. In this state, the kitten can easily break away from the leash and run away from the owner, after which the likelihood of finding the pet will be extremely small. Differences between cats and dogs

If you have a sociable animal that accepts most new things, then you can certainly try walking with your pet. But if you have a cat that hides under the bed even at the slightest change in the home environment, experts don't recommend adding stress to the cat.

Cats readily accept indoor play as their only place to relax, and their social tendencies vary greatly: meeting unfamiliar cats is often stressful for the animal rather than an opportunity to play and socialize with others. Walking means moving in an unknown environment without the usual smells. There is also a risk of the cat being injured or suddenly frightened when encountering unfamiliar dogs.

Punishment for breaking the rules

The amounts of fines if an administrative case is opened regarding a particular incident are as follows.

According to the law, the owner of an animal that damages the property of a neighbor or passer-by will pay a fine of 4-5 thousand rubles.
If a dog is left in an unauthorized place (in particular, in a public place) for a long period of time, the owner faces a fine of 1-2 thousand rubles.
For cruelty to an animal, if the offender is caught red-handed, the fine can be even more than 300,000 rubles.

In cases where there has been a mass extermination of (several or more) domestic or stray animals, the danger of which to surrounding people has not been proven, the Code of Administrative Offenses of Russia does not apply.
