Spring is the time of year when nature comes to life after long frosts, flowers bloom and the sun shines brightly. But such joys fade at the first signs of sexual desire in our pets. In March, most cats show an uncontrollable attraction to each other, which is accompanied by many inconveniences for the owners.
A drug, gestrenol, has been developed especially for such cases, which allows regulating hormonal surges in sexual desire in the feline family. The drug is a contraceptive for animals, containing analogues of natural animal hormones.
Composition and release form of the drug Gestrenol
Gestrenol is a drug intended to stabilize sexual desire in cats during periods of exacerbation. The drug is available in two forms: drops and tablets.
Gestrenol will help calm your cat
Gestrenol includes medicinal components responsible for the regulation of sexual activity in an animal, and auxiliary substances that enhance the pharmacological properties of the former. Depending on the gender of the pet, the drug contains:
- Gestrenol for cats
One tablet weighing 0.100 grams includes: mepregenol propionate - 0.15 milligrams, ethinyl estradiol in an amount - 0.0015 milligrams. The following excipients are used: milk sugar in the amount of 75.0 milligrams, potato starch - 23.8485 milligrams, calcium stearate - 1.0 milligrams.
- Gestrenol for cats
One tablet weighing 0.100 grams includes: mepregenol propionate - 0.4 milligrams, ethinyl estradiol - 0.02 milligrams. The following excipients are used: milk sugar - 75.09 milligrams, potato starch - 23.49 milligrams, calcium stearate - 1.0 milligrams.
The composition of the tablet and liquid forms of gestrenol is identical. Catnip can be used as an aromatic and flavoring additive, which makes the medicine especially attractive to the animal.
Important! A drug intended to regulate sexual activity in cats should not be given to cats, and vice versa.
Reviews from veterinarians and cat owners
Cat owners often come to me and ask what can be done during sexual heat, but without performing the procedure of castration or sterilization. In this case, I always suggest using Gestrenol drops. Although they are inexpensive, they are quite high quality, and are also much more effective than their expensive counterparts.
Elena Ivanovna, veterinarian
I think that Gestrenol in the form of drops is the best drug of its kind. This medicine works very effectively and does not cause any side effects if you do not follow the instructions. Also, thanks to its consistency, the drops are quite easy to apply. It must be remembered that for prevention the drug should not be given for more than a year and a half.
Irina, veterinarian
My cat is already 15 years old. She is at home all the time, so the question of reducing sexual arousal is always relevant. The effectiveness of Gestrenol has been proven for years. Before this drug, I tried many other remedies, but settled on drops. I give it to my Aliska only when she starts to behave restlessly. After 2 days the cat calms down.
Valentina
We treat our cat like a member of the family, since she is already 12 years old.
And all this time nature has taken its toll, especially in recent years. The cat becomes restless, meows loudly and shits everywhere. Because of this, I have been using Gestrenol drops for several years. This drug has exactly the concentration of hormones that is necessary for cats. But you still can’t abuse it. The medicine is also very convenient to give. The bottle has a spout through which, when pressed, 1 drop comes out. Kate
How the drug works
Bravecto for cats: instructions, tablets
Gestrenol is developed taking into account the individual characteristics of cats and cats. The veterinary medicine contains gestagens and estrogens obtained synthetically. In female representatives, the drug causes interruption or delay of estrus. In cats, the acidity of the vagina will change, due to which, even if mating has occurred, conception will not occur.
Gestrenol with mint for cats (packaging)
The drug acts on cats by stopping sperm production.
Important! In relation to cats, the drug is effective only if no more than two days have passed since the start of the “binge”.
Gestrenol has a calming effect on the animal not only at the physiological level, but also at the psychological level. With the start of taking the drug, an improvement in the pet’s behavioral reflexes is noted: appetite normalizes and aggressiveness decreases. However, the drug does not have a hypnotic effect. The animal returns to a calm lifestyle without stress to the body.
What effect does Gestrenol have on cats?
Gestrenol is a multifunctional drug. It affects the physiological processes in the body of animals and changes their behavior. Its main effect is aimed at changing the hormonal levels of animals. Experts have recognized it as having low toxicity for animals. Hormonal medication is prescribed for:
- termination of cat pregnancy;
- decreased libido and arousal;
- improving sexual behavior.
After discontinuation of the drug, the reproductive activity of animals is restored within 2-3 months.

Precautionary measures
When using gestrenol, it is necessary to follow the rules of personal hygiene , as well as safety precautions, which are generalized when working with all types of medicinal substances. While taking gestrenol, you should not eat or drink. After use, wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
The medicine container does not imply further household use. Boxes are disposed of as household waste.
Gestrenol is a unique contraceptive drug based on natural hormones, which was created taking into account all the physiological features of cats. It is ideal for various breeds of pets, has no strict contraindications and is not addictive.

Gestrenol drops for cats and kittens: instructions
The course of treatment is from 3 to 5 days. It is recommended to give no more than 4 drops daily to animals weighing less than 5 kilograms. Pets weighing more than 5 kilograms are given 4 to 8 drops per day.
Gestrenol drops for cats can be added to food, no matter what food - liquid or solid, dripped into the animal's nose or mouth.
Important! You should not skip taking the drug, as in this case the hormonal effect is sharply reduced.
The dosage of drops for cats depends only on the weight of the pet.
Important! No cases of overdose of the drug Gestrenol have been identified.
Dosage and method of administration
There are two uses of the drug to regulate the hormonal levels of the animal. Interruption of estrus is possible with the help of drops if no more than two days have passed since the start of sexual heat. The number of drops depends on the weight of the cat.
Pros and cons of devices
Animal body weight | Number of drops |
body weight up to 5 kg | you will need 4 drops |
body weight from 5 kg to 10 kg | you will need 5-8 drops |
The drug should be given for 3-5 days.
If the end result is a delay in estrus, then gestrenol should be given 4 drops regardless of body weight. The drug is given once a week when there is no heat. With such suppression of hormonal levels, the cat will not be in heat all year round. A break should be taken after one and a half years of continuous use.
If a cat has bred with a cat and kittens are not desired, it is necessary to give the animal 8 drops of gestrenol twice with an interval of 24 hours. This must be done urgently, before more than a day has passed since mating.
Before use, the bottle should be shaken until the sediment at the bottom disappears. The drug is given to animals orally (the required number of drops is dropped into the oral cavity), or added to food. There should be no problems with consumption, since the composition includes mint, which attracts cats with its smell and taste.
pharmachologic effect
The drug contains a gestagen – mepregenol propionate. Its action is to block the mediobasal zone, which is located in the hypothalamus. The follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones released during this process inhibit the secretion of FSH and LH hormones, which are responsible for the development of follicles in the ovaries and their ovulation in the animal.
Propionate together with ethinyl estradiol increases the effect of contraception. They cause the mucus in the cervix to become viscous, which leads to a decrease in the motility of spermatozoa and their death. In the endometrium, there is an inability of the fertilized egg to attach to the wall of the uterus.
The drug is absolutely harmless, is primarily broken down by the liver and excreted in the urine within two days.
Side effects
The drug is harmless if you follow the instructions and prescriptions of veterinarians.
Side effects:
- gagging;
- vomit;
- profuse drooling;
- behavior unusual for a pet;
- manifestations on the skin in the form of a rash;
- polyphagia (gluttony).
Contraindications
The drug intended for cats should not be given to cats. Also should not be used on kittens and immature cats. It is better to wait out the first heat to establish the correct menstrual cycle.
It is forbidden to use the animal if the female is pregnant and nursing offspring, urolithiasis, cancerous tumors, diabetes mellitus, functional and morphological changes in the mammary gland. If intolerance to the components is detected, the drops are changed to others.
Drug interactions
May be taken with other medications. No incompatibility with other drugs was found.
Overdose
Many owners, trying to achieve the fastest effect, neglect the dosage and increase it. Such actions lead to an inability to interrupt estrus, maintain the pet’s peace, and can have a detrimental effect on the animal’s health. It has been clinically proven that excessive administration of drugs that regulate sexual desire leads to breast cancer, pyometra, and endometritis.
Release form
Produced in Russia by LLC NPK SkiFF, by order of LLC NVP Astrapharm, Moscow. Sold in cardboard packages, inside of which there is a polymer dropper bottle and detailed instructions. The volume varies from 1 to 5 ml. The most common dosage is 1.5 ml. The drug is available in the form of tablets and drops.
Storage conditions
Stored for 3 years. After the expiration date, use is prohibited. The medicine should be kept out of reach of small children and animals, avoid exposure to moisture and sunlight. Should not be kept near food or daily products. The temperature range varies from 0 to 25 degrees Celsius. In case of urgent need, gestrenol can be frozen for a short period of time. Once defrosted, it is fully effective.
Analogs
- Perlutex is the active ingredient medroxyprogisterone acetate, contained in an amount of 5 milligrams. The drug was produced in Denmark and is widely used abroad. It has a number of features: it is available only in tablet form, requires a low dosage (1 tablet per week), and is administered to the cat clearly before or after estrus. This feature in the dosage regimen suggests that the drug is not intended for early abortions or interrupting a pet’s estrus. Contraindications and side effects coincide with the description of the previous drug.
- CounterSex - the active ingredients are synthetic hormones ethinyl estradiol and acetobumedone (analogs of natural hormones). In terms of pharmacological action, indications and contraindications, release form, dosage and storage conditions, they are identical to gestrenol. Dosage in drops - 3 ml. The shelf life is 2 years, which is one year less than the described medicine.
- Stop-Intim - the active ingredient is megestrol acetate. Excipients include sodium benzoate and vegetable oil. The drug is intended to reduce the animal’s sexual activity, delay or interrupt estrus, and also correct the pet’s behavior. Apart from differences in dosage, the drugs act similarly.
- Sex Barrier - the active components mepregenol acetate and ethinyl estradiol, enhance the effect of each other, which ultimately leads to loss of ovulation. Otherwise, it has a similar effect to the drug CounterSex.
- Antisex - can be of plant and hormonal origin, contains megestrol acetate.
Contraindications and side effects
Contraceptives for cats have a number of contraindications, so before you start using the product, you need to have the animal checked at a veterinary clinic. Gestrenol is prohibited for use in the following cases:
- the pet has not yet reached puberty;
- females nursing or bearing kittens;
- cats and cats prone to the formation of urolithiasis;
- animals with high blood sugar levels;
- with pathology of the mammary glands in a cat;
- in the presence of neoplasms on the animal’s skin;
- with individual intolerance.
If the dosage is followed, side effects are extremely rare. However, if after taking the drug the animal experiences increased salivation, vomiting, loss of appetite, or an allergic reaction, it is necessary to immediately show the pet to a doctor.
Properties of the drug
Gestrenol is intended for the hormonal normalization of sexual desire in the cat family.
Mepregenol propionate and estrogen, which are part of the solution, affect the hypothalamic-pituitary function of cats, thereby reducing the release of pituitary hormones (LH and FSH). They are responsible for spermatogenesis in cats and the number of follicles in cats. In the animal’s intestines, are instantly absorbed , which are biologically transformed in the liver and are finally excreted from the body in the form of salts within two days. In terms of the risk of exposure to animals, tablets and solutions belong to type 2 - substances that are practically harmless to life. If the dosage is observed, there is no negative effect on the body.
Storage conditions and shelf life
Gestrenol, being a medicinal product, requires special storage rules:
- The temperature should not go beyond -15 degrees to +25 degrees.
- The drug should be stored in a dark place where children and animals do not have access.
- At a safe distance from food products of people and pets.
Shelf life: 3 years.
After using Gestrenol or analogues, the cat becomes calmer

- eat foods
- drink drinks
- smoke cigarettes
Before and after contact with tablets, you must wash your hands using a special product. You should immediately contact a specialist if the medicine accidentally gets inside.

Interaction with other drugs and overdose
Gestrenol can be given to a cat with other medications. No incompatibility with any substances was found.
The manufacturer claims that the medicine does not harm the reproductive function of the animal, since after Gestrenol is discontinued, the body is completely restored within 2-3 months. Nothing is said about side effects or any other complications, but the instructions for use state that the recommended dose should not be exceeded. Reducing the dosage may worsen the effect of the drug.
Like other medications, these drops have several contraindications. For example, Gestrenol can harm the health of young immature kittens, as well as cats during pregnancy and lactation. The drug is completely contraindicated in animals with diabetes, cancer, and dysfunction of the genitourinary system. There is also clinical evidence that regular overdose of drugs that change hormonal levels can lead to cancer of the uterus and mammary glands, and the development of pyometra.
In some cases, a cat may develop an individual intolerance to any component of Gestrenol. If this happens, you should change the contraceptive.
In case of serious overdose, there is a possibility of the following side effects:
- Profuse salivation.
- Inappropriate behavior.
- Allergic dermatitis.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Severe increase in appetite.
If such symptoms appear, you should immediately stop using the drug. If the side effects do not go away within 24 hours, you need to take the cat to the veterinarian. If all the recommendations prescribed in the instructions are strictly followed, the side effects of the medicine will not appear.
Gestrenol can be stored for 3 years. When the expiration date has expired, use of the drug is prohibited. The medicine should be kept in a dark and dry place, away from small children. Storage temperature should not exceed 25° Celsius. Gestrenol also retains its effectiveness after short-term freezing.
How gestrenol works
The effect of the drug occurs due to the action of the following hormones
Hormones:
- Mepregenol is a synthetic hormone, a progesterone substitute. It reduces the production of luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones. If you give it to a cat before the onset of estrus, the production of estrogen will be suppressed and ovulation will not occur. In cats, the formation of hormones and sperm will cease.
- Ethinyl estradiol - thanks to this hormone, sperm cannot penetrate into the cat’s vagina, as it makes the discharge viscous. This hormone prevents the cell from attaching to the wall of the uterus in the event of fertilization.
Summarize
- Gestrenol inhibits sexual arousal;
- Regulates the timing of estrus or prevents it;
- It is a contraceptive.
Gestrenol is completely eliminated from the cat’s body after two days in the urine. Due to the fact that gestrenol contains not one hormone, but two, the concentration of active substances is reduced tenfold.
A hormonal drug is prescribed to cats in some cases.
- To prevent unwanted pregnancy;
- For the purpose of suppressing sexual function;
- For the purpose of correcting the psycho-emotional behavior of the cat (reducing aggression, reducing overexcitation);
- To prevent the onset of estrus and to stop it.
Despite all the positive aspects, gestrenol has many contraindications that should be carefully considered:
- - age of the cat,
- — individual intolerance, sensitivity to the components of the drug;
- -diabetes,
- -urolithiasis disease;
- - lactation,
- - pregnancy,
- - tumor neoplasms of the reproductive organs.
Long-term use of the drug/overdose can cause:
- - allergies;
- - vomiting;
- - altered behavioral response;
- - increased salivation.
